When to start sippy cup?

My daughter will be 7 months on the 29th, and I don't know when to start with sippy cups. She's holding her bottle all by herself. I know there are different ones that have the soft spouts on them that feel like a bottle nipple. Does anybody have any suggestions for starting with one?

Sherbet. My little girl is 9 months & I haven't even really thought of getting her a cup yet. I've heard & read that babies don't need extra water or juice as their feed is more than enought for them. Perhaps I should start looking at cups & get her started.

you can start at 6 months, and if she isnt ready to drink out of it then you can try again later on, but dont force it. she'll use it when she's ready.

Abby does not have a sippy cup and has never drank from one. She's EBF, so we'll just skip bottles AND sippys and move onto the cups with a straw. She gets most if not all of her liquid intake from breastmilk. Although on hot days when we are at the pool or beach she does get some sips of my propel water to keep her hydrated. She can drink from a straw too! I learned that when I got starbucks and was hold the cup next her and she reached down and started sucking on my frappe! YIKES! LOL

My son is 9-1/2 months old and I started him on a soft spout (by Nuby) sippy cup when he was 4 months old because he refused to drink water from his bottle. I recently took him to the pediatrician and she told me to start giving him all of his liquids in the sippy cup now to help him transition from bottle to cup by 1 year old. I bought a new sippy (Playtex, with firmer spout) today and gave him his formula in it. I thought for sure he would refuse it, but he took it no problem. The Playtex sippy flows much faster than the Nuby, so I made sure he drank it slow. I hear it is much easier to transition away from the bottle the earlier you start.

I gave my son a sippy cup when he was six months and he did perfectly fine (and he doesnt even drink out of a bottle). He went straight from boob to sippy cup. I recommend Nuby with two handles. The top feels like a breast.

I only recently started giving my son a sippy cup. I wanted to get some new plastic ones like my daughter used when she was his age because they provided the right balance between easy to drink from and not spilling everywhere. Sometimes I give water and sometimes I give juice.

It's not that babies need juice or water right now. It's about the experience. Just like providing solids right now is less about nutrition and more about familiarizing.

my son started on a sippy cup at 6 months old. it takes them time to get used to...he was 7months as of yesterday and he's just now starting to get the hang of it. don't be surprised if they need help for a while just to get used to it :)

I just started a sippy cup. I mix water and juice together. Took him about an afternoon to figure out how to get it out and he loves it. =)

Water? Juice? Everything I've read says babies don't need these things til they're older which is why I haven't started with the sippy cup...but maybe I should, now that I've read all this. H doesn't hold her own bottle yet, either, but is becoming quite finicky and has a short attention span both on the bottle and at the breast.

my pediatrician said to start at 6 months. my son has never used a bottle so this was new to him, but he caught on pretty quick to it. NUK makes a sippy cup with a soft spout that your daughter may like.

I gave my son a sippy cup when he was about 6 months old. I started him off with the Nuby cup that has 2 handles. The spout is spill free and he absolutely loves it!! He can hold it and drink all by himself. I actually have to hide the cup until after he eats or he will cry until I give him the cup.

I gave my son a sippy cup i think he was around 5 months old.(now 7months).. He didn't really care for it other then to play. He also doesn't care for Apple juice. Instead of using the sippy cup i went for just a regular plastic cup with water in it. he LOVES it thinks hes a big boy now....just wish he would hold his own bottle!

My baby girl started when she was 6 months it tugged at my heart strings that she took to it like a duck to water. But, she isn't holding any type of bottle for herself, YET!
I wish should would be she is not at all interested in that. She'll get there. Good luck

I started each of my kiddos around 6 months and we used soft spout cups to begin with. The nuby cups are what most of my kiddos liked best.

My son is 7 months old tomorrow. I gave him a juice sippy cup from about 4 and a half months. He now takes about 3 cups a day with milk or juice and 1 bottle at night. I use the playtex cups and he likes those.

My son is 7 months old today. I started him on a sippy cup when he was 5 months old because he refused to drink water from his bottle. I use the Nuby trainer cup with the soft nipple and he LOVES it! He's even learning how to drink from a regular cup now.

My son is 7 months. He has been using a sippy cup since 5 1/2 months. I bought him the Avent ones with the handles he likes it and does well. He also prefers to drink out of a regular cup. I'm with most of the others; try a few different ones and I'm sure she'll let you know what she prefers. Good luck

You can start a sippy cup whenever your child is ready. My babe reaches for cups and wants to be a big boy, so we got him a sippy cup when he was 6 mos. He didn't really know what to do with it, but that way he had a cup when we had our cups. He loves it now (7 mos). I think introducing things early can't hurt, unless they are things that could be dangerous.

We started at 6 months... Ive bought a couple different brands. I can say that he seems to like the Avent sippy cups better but they have a ton of parts that have to be taken apart and cleaned (compared to other sippys cups)... And he never caught on to sucking on it with the valve so I took it off and let him try to control how much he wanted with the faster drips. Still getting used to it, but if your daughter is feeding herself she is probably ready! Good luck!!

i started with the sippy cup when he turned 6 months. he is getting used to it. he likes to play with the spout and rub it around his gums. i've tried a playtex one so i might move on to another type. with my older son it took him a long time to adjust to sippy cups so i'm being patient with this child.

I started with a nuby one & avent ones. My daughter caught onto the nuby one right away! It has the soft spout similar to a nipple and she loves that cup! I just bought a playtex one! Haven't tried it out yet though. My daughter started at 5 months but just started recently actually using one!

My daughter is 6 1/2 months & I have been using a tommee tippee cup with her for the past 2 weeks, I have got both the hard spout which folds over & the soft spout with a valve, she gets on best with the cheeper hard spout one. I put her juice in it as I want her to realise that bottles are only milk, she cannot yet hold either the bottle or cup herself but know what is in them & tries to pick the cup up.

My son is 6 1/2 months old and I was going to try to give him his sippy cup for the first time today. I will just put some of his formula in there to see what he does.

My daughter is six months old and about a month ago I bought three different sippy cups one that's like a bottle one that's a normal sippy cup an one that's a training one and I have tried all of them with formula an juice and she loves it. I think it might be that fact that she has a little independence with them because I got all ones with handles so she can hold them and pick them up herself. They all have plastic rubber nipples so even though two of them aren't shaped like the normal nipple of her bottle it still is the same texture and feels the same. I would deffinently recomend getting two or three so your child can try out a couple different kinds and kind of get the feel for which one they will be using when you stop giving them a bottle.

I was just doing some research on this for my baby, he turned 7 mos on the 4th of April. Sounds like it's a good idea to try a few different types of cups to see which they take to the easiest at first. Also may want to try just a cup or sippy that drips so that they can figure out what's in the cup. I also read that at first they will probably only take a sip or two and be done - which is the case with my son so far.
