My 8 1/2 almost 9 month old whines & cries in his sleep at night-he is not awake when this happens. This has been happening for the past couple of months. I have not asked the dr. about it yet but I might have to at his checkup next week. Most of the time it happens after 1-2 hours of him going to sleep. Sometimes he'll turn over from his back or side to his stomach and whine but he's still asleep or sometimes he'll actually wake up, sit up & start crying. Is this a phase or something else going on? He's a very happy baby & we really don't have any trouble out of him. He's crawling & pulling himself up on everything but also starting to show his temper when we take something away from him that he doesn't need or move him from a place he has crawled to that he doesn't need to be. He's teething-two bottom teeth in, one more coming in & top two are coming in so this makes him a little whiny too.

I am glad to hear it has stopped and I think you are righ - it is just a phase. I have heard the same about nightmares and such but your situations sounded too much like mine and my children didn't cry out as if their were scared or hurt it was just a "I am awake and I don't want to be" type cry LOL.....

Thank you Chairettie! It does help....I've found more posts on this site and a couple of other sites and yes it seems to be normal for this age. Some of suggested nightmares or night terrors but I'm not too sure about that... It seems to have stopped for now so I'm hoping it is just a phase.

My twin girls do this too on occasion - they are 9 1/2 months. They are also teething and having occasion growth spurts. Like you little one mine also sit up (very groggily) and cry... I chalk it up to growing pains and teething because I go in, sooth them, lay them down with their woobie (little blanket) and they go right back to sleep. :o) It sounds pretty normal to me Erin, hope this puts your mind at ease a little :o)
