hey,

i had a baby boy july 12. he's my second and with him i had all the usual pregnancy problems where as the first time i had it easy as. also due to breastfeeding i've dropped most of the pregnancy weight without trying where as the first time i didn't... in the last few months since having him my hair has just been falling out! i am using a very expensive! treatment shampoo and conditioner now along with a 'stimulating' hair brush but it doesn't seem to be making any difference. just wondering first of all if i'm the only one and secondly if there are ANY tips on how to help slow down the amount! i had it cut shorter so that there were less knots to pull out more hair.. now i'm getting a bit worried... it jsut never seems to end! i know i should try not to stress but with two kids and a husband and all of life's dramas atm it's hard to relax!!

hey there,
my hair has been falling out in fistfulls since about 2 months postpardum. My hair didn't fall out at all for most of the pregnancy though, so at first i thought it was just catching up. Now it seems to have swung the other way, and my hair is way thinner than it ever has been! Talking to other moms tho, they say that this is pretty normal but it can last for as long as u breastfeed. I had one friend who even had a few little bald spots! but it all came back again after a while, as i'm sure ours will. I cut my hair as well, mostly so that it would look like less was falling out, and i got this really great volumizer from my sister-in-law, who is a hairdresser. I think my hairloss is startign to slow down, but only because i have so much less left to lose!
all the best :)

My hair loss has drastically decreased but it was pretty gross and disturbing at first. For me I haven't noticed more hair loss after bfing (thank goodness!). I didn't know hair loss was normal and didn't experience it after #1 as I got pregnant w/#2 so soon so I had double hair loss after #2...that was GROSS! I thought something was really wrong until my OB assured me it was normal. blech! Yet another lovely thing we go through to get our precious little ones, lol.

I`m going through this too right now. I had to quit breastfeeding about a month ago and it started right after I stopped and doesn`t seem to be stopping anytime soon! Lucky for me I have REALLY thick hair to begin with so its not the end of the world but it still freaks me out!!!

breast feeding or not, postpartum your hormones suddenly drop which is the root cause. it's one of those things your mother never warned you about (nor mine!) in addition, if any of you are on zoloft for ppd it does have a side effect of hair loss as well.

yes i'm losing mine by the handful as well. it happens as a result of hormones suddenly dropping and it's perfectly normal. it will stop in due time and grow back but until then you're doing the best you can.

I am having the same problem. Too the point I now have a bold spot at my temple. I had the same problem after son number 1 was born so am not too concerned as it did stop. In the meantime it means a lot of drain unblocking in the shower! Hope it stops soon.

Wow, I am so happy to hear that there are others with the same problem. My son was born July 18th and for the past few months my hair has been falling out at an alarming rate.. like my husband has to clean out the drain once a week fast. I too am nursing, so I really hope it does not continue the whole time I am nursing!

I had the same problem when i had my two year old. My haridresser noticed the spots on my head where i was losing and the new re growth coming in and suggested i talk to my dr. I had blood work done and sure enough i had a thyroid problem but it went away. I have the same problem now after having my 5 month old. I have not gone to the dr yet to see if it stops on its own. I would just go into your dr and ask about it but it is generally normal.

I am having the same problem. I had my baby july 30th and my hair is falling out now. I talked to my doctor and she said that`s because of breastfeeding. She gave me some vitamins to help. I started taking them this week. I`ll tell you if it helps in some weeks.

My baby was born the same day.. I noticed a lot of my hair falling out as well, though I refuse to cut my hair, it is very normal for this to happen. I am a hairdresser and I hear this all the time. Know that everyone lose a certain amount of hair a day.. and defiantly more after breastfeeding. I would stop worrying NEW hair starts to grow once a hair has fallen out.

Keep taking your vitamins!!

Alexis My hubby and I are trying again too!!! I hope we get preggers this month. Keep my fingers crossed.. Good Luck to you!!!!

It's so nice to hear I am not the only one suffering from this. I thought it was just because I am almost 40! LMAO

my hair, too, is falling out. (i also got a short cut). i spoke with my OB-gyn and she says this is normal postpartum, especially after you stop BFing. she said that all that hair that you didn't lose while you were pregnant will thin out and not to be alarmed (because i was, i thought i was going completely bald and wanted to have my thyroid checked (it was normal)). she said by the time the baby is a year old things should be back to baseline. LOL i'm ready to get preggers again and have all that lush, thick hair back! (also we are ready for another baby) :D
