My baby cries uncontrollably at people she doesnt recognize!!

My daughter is 5 months and 1 week and i have always had different people holding her and she has been fine, up untill about two-three weeks ago she has started crying uncontrollably at anyone who is not me, my mum, my dad, my sister and my grandparents on my mums side. I dont know why she does this as she has always been around strangers like my friends etc and has been fine! Has anyone else had this problem and knows what to do about it?

Deep breath...this too shall pass. Only it may not be right away! Most of my children have gone through this (I have 9) despite my handing them off to anyone and everyone who would hold them in an attempt to prevent stranger anxiety. I used to try and help my babies "tough it out" but that was traumatic for both them and me. Now I ease them through this stage by being around people as much as possible and having people talk to my baby while I am holding him/her, reassuring my baby that he is OK. I try to have someone whom we interact with often (weekly basis or more) hold my baby if only for a minute while I sit and smile at baby, again reassuring him that mama is here. Eventually the stage passes on, sometimes in a month, sometimes it takes longer. Hang in there...it's a hard stage for both of you. Remember, too, that while you know who people are and that your baby is fine with them, your baby does not understand and her attachment to you and other family members is not a bad thing, it's natural.
