My daughter is almost 6 months, and I know all kids are different but my Dr. had stated at her 4 month check up that she should be starting to sit unsupported my 5 months or so and she can't, she sits up fine supported......I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that as well

My baby started sitting up at month 4 and he started crawling at 5.5 months and is already using anything he can to hold him up to walk to where he wants to be and he can already crawl up steps... If anything I feel I didn't get to hold my baby as a baby as long as I wanted and he now only wants me when he is sleepy if doesn't feel well. He is my first and it all feels like its happening so fast and he just turned 8 months yesterday. So bitter sweet...... I want more time with him as my baby. Is it ok mommys get selfish like that?? Love watching him hit these fantastic milestones but it seems like the day he won't light up when he hears my voice or when I walk in a room is going to be coming to an end a lot sooner rather then later. I understand now why ppl have more than one! Again... Lovingly bittersweet!!!

when I went for my daughters 6 month appt, she said that she should start to be able to sit unsupported soon, so I wouldn't worry. My daughter has been able to sit unsupported since about 5 months, but she doesn't roll over much. my doc said she must've skipped a step.

I agree with karen bond, they will do it in there own time, my little boy is 6 and half months and still needs to be supported, he may sit for 30 seconds unsupported but thats it an i am not worried one bit i think he will crawl before sitting by him self. so i wouldnt worry and he will do it:)

every baby is different, i cant believe a dr would say that, my daughter was sitting unsupported at 4.5 months but i still would trust her not to fall back when she is tired, dont listen to the dr she will do it in her own time :)

My son is 6 1/2 months old today and he is able to sit unsupported for quite awhile as long as he has had a nap recently. It seems he falls face first a lot trying to grab his feet (which is his obsession right now). When he gets excited he falls or if he's too worked up in the first place he just flings around everywhere.

I don't think a baby should be sitting un-supported by 5 months but every baby develops differently. My niece just turned one and she wasn't able to sit without support until she was 7 months and she just started crawling about a month ago. My son is already working those legs! Just today he pushed himself completely off the ground , it shocked me. And of course when I went to grab the camera he decided it was time to get angry! ... ♥

All babies do things at their own pace. My son started sitting at four months and crawling last week. What about trying to sit her on the floor with her back against the couch? So she's supported, yet not? It'll happen in due time:when she's ready!

My daughter is 6 months and 3 days and she sits well unsupported, but only for a little while. I have to be ready to catch her all the time because she will tumble after any number of seconds/minutes. It really varies each time. Every child will get there eventually :] find a new doctor.

My baby turned 6 months last Sunday and he's still not sitting unsupported so I wasn't able to feed him solids yet. Yes, they have their own timeline and I believe he will soon. People say he should be rolling over by 4 months but he did at 5 months, the thing is, at least he did. It may be a little late but he did. And that's the point of it. :-)

my twins were 6months on 3rd of jan and neither of them are sitting unaided yet but it will happen when they are ready just as your lo will sit when she is ready dont worry too many people compare their baby with others but you can't they are all different and will all reach mile stones in their own time and not before so dont worry about it!

My little boy is 5.5 months and he also can sit perfectly supported, but topples when there is no support after a minute or so (sometimes less). I think that our little ones will get there eventually--I know that my little guy hates tummy time so he doesn't do as much of it as perhaps other babies do. All babies are on a different time line but they will all get to those "milestones" eventually, no worries! :)

not true, many babies are not sitting by 6 months, Some are, but it depends on The baby. It does not mean anything bad if they are not. every child is different, and if This doctor starts treating your daughter like somethings wrong with her, seriously consider seeking a new doctor.
My son is 6 months old, and has only just started to barley attempt to sit, but with help and assistance as everyone else has said.

Unsupported, as in sitting between your legs maybe? No rush, usually between 5 - 7 months is average. Enjoy!

Don't worry about it. Give the baby time, she'll get it. My son was just plain lazy and was behind on everything. My daughters couldn't wait to do stuff and got mad when they couldn't. I wouldn't worry, my last one will be 6 months end of the month and she just started sitting up this past Christmas.

My Son will be 6 months on the 27th Janurary and he still isn't sitting unsupported, even sitting supported he will either lie back or want to be pulled up on his feet, i'm not to worried bout it though as he is my third child and know all too well through experience that each child develops and does things in their own good time. Also as far as doctors advise goes i have learnt listen to what they say but take the bits you think will help away with you and the bits you don't think will help leave behind this is good advice my mother gave me when I had my first and im so glad she did :)

My son is almost 6 months and can finally sit unsupported but only for a little bit at a time, I would just keep working on it, do you ever have him sit in a high chair while you eat or anything? I have my son sit in his high chair he got for Christmas for practice and also so he can watch me eat so he can kinda figure out the whole eating with a spoon thing.

As soon as my daughter fit in her bumbo chair, 3 months, I had her in that chair almost all the time. She will be 6 months on the 12th and she can sit unsupported, but of course after a while she will start to tip over, so I will never leave her unattended. The chair is great for support, I keep it on the floor at all times. As she is getting bigger she is starting to arch back now so she is almost done with it. She is now rolling over when on the floor and when she is in he little rocker that is in a recline position she tries to sit upright, so I know she is strengthening her muscles.

I feel that the Bumbo chair did help A LOT, all thought she is almost grown out of it, I know that it did a lot with helping her with that support.

When she is in her bumbo chair I have a basket full of toys that I tip over so they are with in her reach and she plays with her toys. it keeps her occupied for a while.

her is the chair at target.

This is from GrowingChild.com, a newsletter written by TOP Child Development professors in the US:

SIX MONTHS OLD

As Baby continues to develop, he must build each new achievement on those which have gone before. Now when you pull him from a lying to a sitting position, he lifts his head strongly and actively cooperates by pulling with his arms. He sits well in a high chair with little or no additional support, although if the high chair is a large one, he may still need a pillow at his back to fill up the extra space.

If you sit him on the floor, the six-month-old baby usually can sit alone for 5-10 seconds by leaning forward and using his hands and arms for support. His back is rounded and he sags forward unless he props himself on his arms.

About half of all six-month-old babies can roll over from back to stomach easily in either direction. Once on his stomach, Baby continues to improve his way of pulling and kicking himself along the floor or bed and turning himself around. He may roll over and over to reach his goal, or roll onto his back and push himself along with his feet. Generally, however, he will prefer lying on his stomach.

Baby has improved his reaching coordination and purposefully reaches for things when he sees them. Sitting in his high chair, he is now usually able to reach for and grasp a dangling toy. This kind of reach and grasp requires much more control than taking an object from the tray or someone's hand. He probably will grasp the object in his palm, but soon will start to use his thumb as well as his fingers to hold it. During this month he may begin to reach for a toy with one hand instead of two.

-Top of Page-
AT SIX MONTHS BABY LIKES TO:

* Roll over.
* Mouth a teether or spoon.
* Smile at familiar faces.
* Drop, throw or bang things.

Give Your Baby:

* Household objects such as plastic cups, spoons and small pot lids.
* A ball to roll and clutch.
* Mouthing toys.
* The sound of your voice.

Hi, thought I'd pipe in with info from Germany. Mind, some of this is only my opinion and I'm not a doctor. First, most babies at this age don't sit unsupported without practice. Second, doctors and midwives here say NEVER sit a baby that doesn't move into the position on their own. This was explained to me, supposedly first, if the muscles aren't ready to support baby, then there might be damage and second, this discourages from crawling. HOWEVER, I haven't seen any research that backs up this opinion. I find that GrowingChild.com is the best resource for what baby 'should be' doing. I think doctors and parents get way too paranoid. There are certainly big developmental milestones--but if your baby is doing some ahead, some on time, and some late you're probably OK.

Find some research and bring it to this doctor's attention or change doctors IMHO.

remember that sitting unsupported doesnt mean that shes chilling watching tv on her butt ;) it means that while she is interested in something, she can maintain the legs crooked, leaning forward sitting position for a period of time. Not long... babies just dont stay still that long. If you spread her legs and sit her leaning forward onto her arms does she automatically fall sideways or can she stay for a few seconds? Every kid is different, which is why doctors really need to watch how they phrase these questions :( Although he did say "starting to" sit unsupported, not have the skill mastered... I think it was his way of gently nudging you to work with her on the skill. Myself, I have twin girls 5 months old, one rolls over and is just about to start crawling, but wont sit up/still to save her life. The other rolls from tummy to back, but not the other way yet, and can sit unsupported for about 15 seconds before she teeters to the side. Both of them are 100% within the normal limits of kids their age, as is yours :)

My baby was 4.5 mths when he started sitting unsupported and he will sit very well but I'm always by him just in case he falls which he rarely does. All babies are different and will learn when they are ready. I never listen to my dr bc I know my son more than he does, I would just keep working with him and he will be fine! My son will also be 6mths jan. 17!

He can sit well without support but still only for a little while i would never sit him up and not have my arms ready to catch him. he also falls more when he gets excited. but i think he it will still be a while before he'll sit all by himself. i dont believe that at 5 months a bay should be sitting completely without support i think they would have meant just a few seconds.

IMO, the words "should be" should be eliminated from every doctor's mouth, parenting magazine, chart, etc. Babies/children are wonderfully unique and will reach milestones when the time is right for them. Having a general timeline/age is nice but there is no hard and fast "rule" that babies should sit up unassisted by 5 mo. My little one cannot sit unassisted nor can many babies his age. If others can then great but my baby and yours will sit up by themselves eventually and in the end it all evens out as far as development. So rest easy knowing your baby is quite normal and in a while you will find that she is sitting by herself just fine and in her own time.
