My hair is doing the same thing and my son turned 3 months, then in very small print in the pamplet for my marina iud one of the side effects is hair loss!! i have thin hair also and it used to be very long but i had to cut most of it off a couple weeks ago cause it didnt look healthy! i am making an apt to take the iud out! My hair is coming out in clumps everytime i brush or even just run my fingers through it! The marina has some awful side effects! Sex drive is shot, im balding, and my husband can feel it and hurts him! Just shove barbed wire in there, that will do the trick! lol

Thanks! Good to know that this is just a phase. I'm tired of having to constantly pick up my hairs off the floors and counters.

If it seems excessive or if you're having other symptoms, have your doc check your thyroid levels. Post-partum thyroid problems are not that rare and can cause lots of hairloss, as well as weight gain/loss, anxiety/depression, etc.

Good post! I was wondering about this as well. I'm having to pour Drano down the bathroom drain about every other week since my last baby was born. I can just sit and run my fingers through my hair and pull out several strands. I don't remember losing my hair like this after my son over 3 years ago. Guess it's true that every pregnancy is different - even post-pregnancy. Hoping it starts to ease up some and come back thicker. I also noticed after my first that my hair now has some curls to it, although it's all frizzy if I let it air dry. Also hoping it goes back to being straight again.

I got it with my first baby and it increased after i had her and my hormones were shifting back. After about 4 months of it, i freaked and went to see my dr.. she did a thyroid test and other things and all came back negative. turned out it was just stress bc after so many months, its no longer a hormone issue. I honestly had my hair falling out for about 2 years. It wasnt until i got pregnant with my second baby that it stopped and started growing back thick, like it used to be! Now my second baby is almost 4 months and my hairs back to falling out in clumps again! Its been long enough to not be hormones anymore. Im hoping that it passes, like the last time!! It sucks so bad and makes me want to cry some days!!!

I thought I was going insane!! Glad Im not the only one. With my first daughter I lost hair but it was minimal, just normal everyday while brushing, the same way it happened before i was pregnant. After having my 2nd child it comes out in clumps daily, in my hand, on the brush, and I find it all over my house, on my kids clothes, mine. I just hope it ends soon!!!

Hi Nanette,
I can honestly say that it is a phase (and one I hope that passes quickly).... This is my second baby, and I know with the first one I lost clumps of hair in a big way, but did get the fine 'baby' hairs within the months that followed... of course I then fell pregnant with my daughter and now am going through the shedding process again :(

Okay, it's funny you should say this, because I've been noticing the same thing lately. I wouldn't say it's coming out in clumps, but it's definitely falling out a lot more than it was! I found this at Baby Centre:

"All new moms experience hair loss, though some lose more than others.

Here's why it happens. During pregnancy, changes in your hormone levels cause your hair to stay in a resting phase for longer, so you lose less hair on a daily basis. (You may have noticed that your hair seemed thicker than usual.)

After you've given birth and your hormones have settled down — usually at about 12 weeks after delivery — more hair shifts into a shedding phase. You may be alarmed to find hair coming out by the handful.

Normally, you lose about 100 to 125 hairs a day, but after delivery, you may be losing about 500 a day. This can be very disturbing, but try not to worry too much — you won't go bald!

There's little you can do about the shedding, other than to be patient. The shedding tends to be most noticeable when you're shampooing or brushing your hair, so you may find that shampooing less frequently or letting your hair dry naturally instead of brushing and blow-drying helps slow the loss.

On the other hand, it's going to fall out at some point, and you might prefer that it happen in private. Regular washing and brushing may help you avoid leaving a trail of shedding hair behind you all day. Try using a thickening shampoo if you feel your locks are getting too thin.

You may notice fine "baby" hair growing along your hairline at the top of your forehead once the shedding phase has ended. Having bangs can do a lot to camouflage this wispy new growth while it's growing out.

Within another six months or so, your hair should be back to its normal pre-pregnancy thickness, but you may find that the texture of your hair is never exactly the same. It may be wavier or straighter or more dry or oily than it was before pregnancy. This is probably due to the hormonal upheaval you've just been through.

If the hair loss doesn't seem to be slowing and you're still losing lots of hair six or so months after delivery, check in with a dermatologist or your healthcare provider. It may be a sign that you're low on iron, which is not entirely uncommon for new moms."
