I was discussing this with my midwife on friday. She said that it's very common between 22 and 28 weeks for pregnant women to get moderate to severe leg cramping at night and she gave me an explanation and solution for this problem -- if you are experiencing leg cramping, I highly suggest talking to your doctor about this solution and whether it will work for you;
In your prenatal vitamin, it has calcium AND iron in it and when you take them together they cancel each other out. So as your baby is growing, around 22 weeks, your baby starts taking it's calcium from YOUR body, since the iron in your prenatal is eliminating the calcium you're taking in. It's usually around 28 weeks that your bodys calcium build up starts to drastically diminish, causing leg cramping.
What you can do to remedy this is take a calcium and magnesium liquid supplement. 1 teaspoon of it every evening before bedtime will give your body the calcium it needs to ward off leg cramping and the magnesium will counter act the iron from eliminating the calcium in your prenatal vitamin.
