My son is almost 2. I speak English and some spanish. My husband speaks english only. My son stays with his aunt during the week while I work ,who only speaks spanish to him. He is learning quickly. My question is: for the things I do know how to say in spanish is it ok for me to say in both english and spanish at the same time to him. For example, saying, "Do you want some water, quieres agua?" I have heard conflicting opinions with some people saying you must stick to one person, one language. I know I can't only speak in spanish to him because I am not fluent, but I do know a lot of words especially for a 2 year olds vocabulary. What are your experiences with this?

Oh, I agree! I wish people would post things 'cause this forum could be a great tool if everyone participated in discussions!

Thanks! Nice to finally get a response to this question. I think we need to get more people on here to discuss these topics.

I think having one person speak in one language and the other speak in a different language is just an easy way to help your child distinguish between the languages. But it's not going to hurt to tell him something in english first and then repeat it back in spanish. If he's learning it, he's learning! Your son is not going to have as hard a time learning spanish as you'd think. Just speak anything you know to him and he'll catch on. Make sure it's consistent though. Your son is still young, they learn fast!
