28 weeks = 6 or 7 months old?

My baby was born on October 29, 2009. He had is his six month appt. today (two weeks after it was originally scheduled because we were out of town). The doctor seemed concerned about his weight (19.6lbs) and I mentioned that we were two weeks late coming in and he was actually six and half months old - 28 weeks old. The doctor proceeded to tell me that my baby was fine then, since he was 7 months old. But, just because he's 28 weeks doesn't make him seven months old - he won't be 7 months old until May 29!! Am I right? Pregnancy (fetal) age is based on the 4 weeks lunar calendar but age after birth is not!

So is he six and a half months old or seven months old? Because, well, I'm totally confused now.

Besides that, there was concern that my baby isn't crawling yet, since he is "7" months old... My response was, "Oh well - that's his bad then /sarcasm. He's a baby - he grows and learns and does things at his own pace and I know very FEW babies his age (born the same month as him) who are crawling and starting to stand up on their own. He has every opportunity, he is healthy, he eats about 40oz milk a day (which is on target with how much he should take in based on his weight) and a stage one fruit before his second morning bottle and a stage one veg before his evening bottle. What do you want me to do? Geez..."

Do any of you moms of October babies have any opinions about this? I have no problem with our pediatrician - I actually love him to death. But I disagree completely with his assessment today. Just looking for other opinions.

My little girl was born on 29th October also, she weighs more than that, but the doc has no concerns, she is very long also (we are tall parents), I say my daughter is a month older 29th of every month, so 7 months old on 29th May!!! Could you imagine counting the weeks for the rest of their lives so you knew how many months they were lol!! It is much easier and makes more sense to go the same date every month to count the months!! Babies will eat and grow at different rates and their habbits change frequently, I wouldn't worry about size, have you noticed that no-one ever says your baby is just right for their length or weight, it's always big or small!! My new doc thinks my little girl is perfect, all in proportion and healthy, and that is about all that matters, she doesn't sit on her own or crawl yet, but I don't really care, she is my 3rd and my last and I know things will happen in their own time!! Enjoy while they are little, it doesn't last long!!!!

I always go by the DATE eg. My daughter was born on Oct 10th and every month on the 10th it is her "birthday" On may 10th she turned 7 months and on June 10th she will be 8 months old.

When I was pregnant I was always confused because they say you are pregnant for 9 months, but really it is 10 months isn't is?? 4 weeks are in a month and 40 weeks are in a pregnancy that is 10 months isn't it?

Anyways...My daughter is NOT crawling and she is 7 months old. She can walk along the couch, but has NO interest in crawling Good for you, sticking up for yourself...I think your Dr. is wrong about this. (Just because they have a degree does NOT mean they are ALWAYS right...you ARE right all babies learn at their own pace.)

My son, Langstn, born on the 22nd of October will be 7 months May 22nd. That is the way it should be. He isn't crawling yet...he doesn't even get on his knees and rock back and forth yet. He is satisfied with rolling everwhere to get what he wants...lol. He is my 4th and they were ALL different, not one the same. You are right...relax and enjoy your baby right now. It is to early to be worried about him not crawling. That is just silly!

My son was born Oct 31st, so pretty close, and I class him as being 6.5mths (plus a few days to be technical hehehe). If we based it one 4wks being one month, then our babies would be 12mths old at the end of September, not October, so I go by dates. Before he was 3mths old (ie. 13wks), I always went by weeks, but once he hit 3mths I went by months, if that makes sense :-) Next time you see him you should ask how many weeks a 12mth old is, are they 48wks or 52wks old???

My little guy just started crawling 3days ago, but is extremely selective as to when he wants to do it. Unless he is in a very active mood he'll stick with his 'commando crawl' that's he's been doing for ages. He only started sitting up on the 7th of this month too.

my friend has a now 4yr old who did not even roll over until she was 7.5mths old, now she is a bundle of energy who cannot sit still for a minute.
