My son is 9 months old and has three teeth...two on the bottom and one on the top. Recently we discovered he grinds his teeth, I'm not sure if he is doing it because it feels good or what. Has anyone else had their kiddos display this behavior? Do you know if it is something we need to worry about? Thank you for any help!

I think they do it because they just happen to be in the way... i mean you aren't awake then you grind your teeth at night.... so it's not like babies do it on purpose.
Also.. if they are new teeth I'd think it would feel good to some degree... wouldn't you?

My 7 month old started grinding his teeth and he's got five total right now, his top two and one next to it and two on the bottom, i have no clue why he does it, and worried it might cause damage...

My little girl is 9 months and she's been doing it for about a month straight! She actually chipped a little piece out of her front tooth from doing it so often and vigorously. I try to put a binky in as soon as she starts. She won't let me put my finger in her mouth. It makes my teeth hurt just hearing it!

my son waas doing it and the dentist and pediatrician both said not to worr about it that when their teeth are comig in it hurts (DUH LOL) and it makes them feel bettr more than likely they will outgrow it, also as the get older they may start up again when the start getting grown up teeth because they "tickle" while they are sleeping.

oh boy! I was freaking out when I heard my little girl grinding her new teeth. She's had the bottom ones for a month and a half but the top ones are new. I couldn't figure out the sound the first time she did it, then I realized what she was doing. Thank you for letting me they grow out of it and it's not as harmful as I thought.

My son is almost a year old and now has 7 teeth, when he had his first four teeth, 2 on top 2 on bottom, he grinded his teeth ALL THE TIME! It drove me nuts, that sound is the worst sound in the world to me! But when he got more teeth he kind of stopped. I don't think it's anything to worry about really. I think they do it because there's something new that they're just trying to get used to.

My daughter is 11 months old and she grinds her teeth when she gets tired as well as when she is teething, it creeps me out, but i guess it's normal. My nephew just turned 2 yesterday and he also has been grinding his teeth lately and he is cutting his 2 year molars as well

My son has 8 teeth and he does it. Although I have noticed a pattern, he only does it when he is eating jars of fruit. It is the weirdest thing! I don't think it is anything to worry about, at the moment. If they continue to do it into their preschool years then the dentist may recommend a guard.

my little girl did that for a couple weeks. i believe it's just them teething. i'm sure when they get the pain from teething the clench there jaws and that what causes grinding of teeth. i don't think you have to much to worry about. try and give him a teething ring or something soft to chew on

My little boy is 10 months old and has 8 teeth (4 on top & 4 on the bottom). He loves to grind his teeth. My maternal Child Health nurse said it is quite normal. They are just experimenting with these new funny hard things in their mouth. My little boy also loves to pick them with his fingernails. I hate it. It's like fingernails down a blackboard.

This used to drive me crazy. The only thing I can suggest is to distract him. Teeth are tough & he shouldnt cause harm/pain. Mine just did it for the reaction sometimes. Good luck.

My son did this too as soon as his top teeth all came in (all at once to boot!). He did it constantly for a few days, and now just once in a while. I think it was just the novelty of having the top teeth there. As long as he's not hurting himself, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine is 9.5 months and he has 4 on top and 3 on bottom. He's doing the very same thing and YES, it's normal. They are just experimenting with their new found chompers and I hear they stop gradually. Mine was always a thumb sucker but I have been popping paci's in his mouth ever since teething started and do it when he's grinding his teeth and it's been a God send I tell you. I wasn't sure if he'd take it but he has and it's been much nicer on my ears. :)

My daughter was born on oct. 19, 09 and she grinds her teeth all the time and her doctor told me that it is perfectly normal and there is nothing to worry about

Hi Katherine, My friends dad is a dentist and he says that it is a normal thing for bubs to do. Unfortunatley, there is nothing that we can do to stop them doing it. Just something new for them to do. Danielle

my son is just 10months and he has had his bottom 2 teeth for a while, but the top one has not long come through. he always seems to be grinding his teeth since the new tooth has come through so maybe they are just getting used to having another tooth

My son has just turned 10 months yesterday and has two bottom teeth and two upper ones. He has started grinding his teeth as soon as the upper one came out. But I noticed he's doing it less and less every day. I don't think you need to worry about it. I believe they are just discovering their teeth

My 10 month old son also grinds his 7 teeth quite a bit. I was starting to worry about damage to his teeth from all the constant grinding. However I found putting a binkie in his mouth when he's doing it helps with preventing that (& the terrible sound it makes).

My lil man has all eight of his front teeth. Every once and a while we hear him grinding his teeth. I hate it, its like nails on a chalk board to me.

Ever since your post, I have noticed my son grinding his teeth, once in a while. I think he is experimenting with the feeling of the teeth, and trying new things. I also see him licking his new teeth, one by one, with his cute, little tongue!

Yes! My 9 month old grinds his teeth as well. At first, I was worried he would chip a tooth or do severe damage (everyone says grinding your teeth is bad!). But, my baby boy has 7 teeth now and one more starting to come through. It could help relieve some of the pain or it could be that "There is something extraordinary in my mouth and it makes noise!"

My son is 9m. He's got 4 on top & 2 bottom. I asked his ped about this & she said it's "normal". If u hear them doing it u should just ingor it & give them a teether or wet rag to chew on.

My son also grinds his teeth, but I'm not sutain if I should worry. When he does it I try to give him something to chew on bc I think that he is tryin to soothe his gums. I usually give him a wet rag he dont like the teething toys.

Yes! My son does this too. He's 9 months old. He's got 5 teeth. three on top, two on the bottom. I ask the pediatrician, and he said that he's just getting used to his teeth in his mouth. They are new to him. They shouldn't get damaged at all. It should pass once he's used to them.

Yes, Isaac also has 2 bottom and 1 top, he only does it every now and then, thinks its just a new trick! Shouldn't be a worry in the short term, can sometimes be a sign of stress, so if it happens at the same time each day you could perhaps find a cause, i'm certain its just something new they've discoverd!!

Both of my older children ground their teeth too. My little girl has not yet done it but both the boys eventually stopped doing it. i asked our dentist about it and she said that most kids do it when their teeth cuz of the newness and the feeling and that if it continued for a long period of time it could damage their teeth. but is normal and they usually grow out of it.

My son is almost 10 months and has had all 8 of his 1st year teeth since 8 months. He grinds them sometimes too. drives me bonkers. I hate the sound they make. I just tickle his chine and he forgets he;s doing it.

My little boy hardly does it anymore. He has 6 teeth, 2 on bottom, 4 on top and he started doing it not long after the top teeth came thru. It only lasted about 3-4weeks, then I think he must have gotten used to his teeth.
