Is my 5 month old a mini-baby?

My baby girl was 8lb 2oz and 20 1/2 inches long with a 13 1/2 inch head circumference. Now at 5 months old she is 13lb 13oz and 25 inches long with her head only at 15 1/2 inches. People are always commenting to me how small she is or thinking that I'm not feeding her enough or something. Are there any other mama's that have small (non premee) babies that are small like my little girl?

My daughter was born Oct 27th (a week late) and weighed 8lbs 13oz and 21in. Now at 5 months she is 14.5. Depending on the brand of clothing she wears 3-6, 6-9 or 6-12. Obvioulsy all Babies grow at different paces, and it is a little worrisome having a smaller baby (espically when she was born soo big) It's reassuring to know that other babies born the sametime are the same size. The doctor isn't worried, so neither are we. We are definatley not underfeeding her she super happy between feedings!! The good thing is she wears the hundreds of clothes I buy way more than once!!

I have a small baby as well. He's 13lbs. at 6 months (although he was only 5lbs when he was born [5 weeks early]). Anyway, I also get tired of hearing the comments about his size. I know he eats well, we've been doing solids for a couple months now and he's a purely happy baby. I think the reason for the surprise at a smaller baby is that the obesity rate even at this early age is highly increased. I don't know about you but I would rather have a healthy baby. Your doctor can show you where her height and weight on the growth chart and as long as he's not worried about it, I would take pride in the fact that your baby has a much lower chance of diabetes and heart problems!!!

Hi! I have a mini baby too! My son Desmond was born on Oct. 11th and was 7lbs on the dot and 20 1/4 inches. Now at almost 24 weeks he weighs just under 14 lbs and is 26 inches long. He's in the bottom 10% for weight but according to his doctor his is completely healthy. Everyone is always saying how small he is, which is gets really annoying.

My daughter was borm Oct 3rd weighing 7lbs 15 oz around 20 inches and dropped a lot of weight in the hospital but she is now around 18-20 lbs, my son was also big. I exlusively breastfed both until 6 months (I'm starting my daughter with rice cereal in 2 weeks).

My son stopped gaining any weight as soon as we started solids, he went from gaining a lb a week at first then from 6 mnth to 18 mnth he only gained 3 lbs. I have heard from other breastfeeding moms that this was the case for them as well, one woman even started solids early because her doctor recommended it to increase calories and her daughter started dropping weight very quickly and she had to take her back off the solids.

If you are breastfeeding you might want to look into whether they are getting too much foremilk instead of hindmilk (try the La Leche League website) there are fewer calories in the foremilk. Otherwise, if the doctor is not concerned then there is nothing to worry about.

My son was 6lb 9oz when he was born and he is 5 months old and weighs a little over 11lbs. I've been told your baby should double their weight by the time they are 6 months old, so don't worry it sounds like your daughter is on the right track, but I know what you mean it's annoying when people comment on how small they are - some babies start off growing slow and then have a big growth spurt. Just remember not all babies are the same and not all babies are big!! Trust your instincts, if you think she is healthy and happy then it doesn`t matter what everyone else says!

my little girl was 7lb 1oz and 1 week overdue. at 5 months she weighs 13lbs. I, too thought she is too small. However, if you look at the growth chart, she is not considered below. My little one however will not eat solids yet. For some reason she is just stubborn and will not open her mouth for the cereal or she spits it all out. Frustrating...but I know that she will soon get the hang of it. How about your little girl....eating solids yet?

My little guy is almost 5 months and weighing 13 lb 11 oz... and is only 25 inches... and was 7 lbs at birth...so I guess he is a little one... but still in the 25th percentile! Are you exclusively breastfeeding, because breast fed babies tend to be a bit smaller, which is okay!

My mini-baby girl was born 5 lbs 12oz on October 13th, and as of today she is 12lbs 14oz. I hope she gets to 13 lbs by 6 months. She is on breast milk, and solids twice a day. She only eats about 24oz of milk per 24 hour period.

My baby girl was born 6lbs 11 oz, and at 4 months she was 15lbs and 25 inches, in the other hand when my 5 year old girl was theat size she was 7 months, every baby grows different, and what matters it the patter that she has been growing with. if she is gaining weight and eating well, that's what matters, my older gilr has always been in the 50th percentile, while my new baby has been in the 90th percentile since she was about 1 month

My little girl was born Oct 12 and weighed 7 lbs 12 1/4 ozs...at 5 months she was just over 13 lbs. Height and weight were in the same percentile...so that's ok. She's chubby and bright...so I'm not concerned. She's just petite, I guess. Seems funny as I'm 5'8" and not exactly slim these days:D In our "bigger is better" society, it's hard to not get caught up in the numbers. My girl is breast fed...which can make for slower weight gain.

My baby was officially measured at 25 inches at her 4 month checkup, but I re-measured her myself at home and got 26 inches. She was 21.5 inches at birth and 8 pounds 14 ounces, so the doctor was a bit concerned but said she would wait until 6 months to see if she started gaining again. She was only 13 pounds 4.5 ounces though, so she's pretty skinny. I think some of us just give low-cal milk or something. I don't think I'm not feeding her enough she's just skinny, as was my son, who is seven and still skinny.

My son was 8 lbs 1 oz 19 1/2 inches long and he's always had a big head, but he's not very big right now either. he's got skinny arms and legs where as my daughter at 5 months was a little porker. and my son eats almost constantly so i know he's not under fed. babies grow at there own rate, and as long as the doctor says that your childs development is normal, than it doesn't really matter what other people say. Just tell them she's gonna be a graceful dancer. ;)

My son was born 10/31/09 and he weighed 7 lbs 7 oz. 20 inches long. At 5 months he weighs 13 lbs 8 oz and is almost 26 inches. The doctor, who was concerned about early weight loss, said he was and I quote "a perfect baby". I too obsessed with his weight gain at first because he had gone down to 6 lbs 8 oz in the first 3 days. He is in a range of clothing sizes...some 0-3 onesie type outfits still fit but the pants don't. Anything with feet needs to be at least 6 month because his legs are LONG. He even has a pair of jeans size 6-12 month that I have to roll up only once, but I have to roll the waist (which is elastic) down to make them tighter since he is still pretty thin in the waist. Diapers are a pain because for them to be long enough in the back they are too wide in the waist and the tabs have to overlap!

I get SO tired of the people saying he is "so tiny!" For one thing, he has the face and hair of an older child, so people think he is 7-8 months old. I always say...if he is so tiny YOU carry him around for a while. He is healthy and why would I want to carry extra weight just to make strangers happy?

Enjoy your "small" healthy baby!

I am so glad there are people going through this too. I was so scared for the longest time. I was scared there was something wrong with my milk. I obsessed over my daughters weight for months. She was born Oct. 3, 2009 and at 5 1/2 months she is still able to fit her 0-3 month clothing. She was far from being a preemie at 9 lbs and 6 oz at birth. The Dr has assured me that she is is healthy.

I wouldn't worry, as long as your baby is healthy, that is all that matters! I have the opposite problem, I have a nearly 5 month old girl who over 2 weeks ago weighed 17lb 10oz has been in 6month clothing since she was 3 1/2months old (nearly ready to move onto the next size! I had my baby 3 weeks early, she weighed 7lb 9oz!! All my have been bbig, and I always get 'OMG s/he is huge', no-one ever says they are just right lol!!

hi Brittany,
my little girl is 22 weeks, she weighed 6lb 14oz at birth and is now 10lb 5oz.
my public health visitor had me terrified that she wasnt getting enough and that she wasnt thriving BUT after seeing a paeds consultant and a few specialists my mind was put to rest. She is just small, not all babies are on the growth graphs,my little woman is still in 0-3 month clothes but she is healthy, alert, hitting all her milestones if not ahead and above all she is happy!
I get the disbelieving looks all the time too...."how old is she now?" and when I reply 5 months...."ooooh..shes soo tiny"
The way to look at it is...any growth or weight gain is a positive sign,if it plateaus then u need to rule out any metabolic disorders but ur gp can do that and otherwise ignore the graphs and the digs.....we big people come in all shapes and sizes too!
all the best,B x
