My little girl is is 14 months old and eats everything from soap, to dog food, anything really. anything she can get to hand she eats. its not like shes not fed properly, she has her meals and drinks and healthy snacks too. does anyone else have or has had this problem? if so how do i stop her from doing it? i dont want her to eat something that is going to make her ill.

if someone could get back to me it would be much appreciated

My 15 month old puts everything she can find in her mouth! I don't know how to stop her. I figure she is going through a phase in which she just needs to explore how everything tastes. I give her fish oil and all her other vitamins and she does not complain.

Ahh... my dear, i know all about that. its got nothing to do with being hungry. its just because it looks interesting and they test stuff by feeling and putting in their mouth.... My Kuzi will bite the soap and the towel while i am bathing him, and he will pick something up and out in his mouth in midst of his snack, coz we have snack outside.. Do not feel like you are doing something wrong. just try and put all the dangerous things away and also when you notice something is being picked up just discourage it... its so funny sometimes i have to agree

I agree with all the other mamas. Totally normal toddler behavior. My 14 month old does the SAME thing. Just redirect redirect redirect!

All toddlers go through this. My daughter chews on everything she can, picks the smallest crumb off the ground, etc. We don't let her in the kitchen for too long and we keep everything dangerous locked away. My cousins son eats EVERYTHING. He just ate some of her deodorant last week lol. She jokes that she has poison control on speed dial, but really she does because her kiddo gets in to EVERYTHING even when it's put away. Only advice I can give on how to get them to stop, is to be patient and to stay continuous in saying 'No'. That's what we do with our daughter. If she touches something she's not supposed to it's a stern 'no' and if she does it again we say 'no, boo boos' or 'no touch Amaya'. She does keep testing but I see her watching us from the corner of our eye to see if we'll catch her lol. Good Luck!

All toddlers are deperate to learn everything about everything. A mouth is a lot more sensitive to touch than fingers are and gives you a taste too. This is why we have to baby proof more things the more mobile children get.
Good luck

It is just her way of exploring the environment. I wouldnt be too concerned, I doubt she is eating it because she is hungry, she is just working out what everything is!

toddlers do put most things in their mouths and give them a taste. BUt it could also be intestinal worms. If they have worms you'll find they are hungry constantly. Get your Dr to check. If you have a dog and it turns out to be worms, make sure you worm your dog too.

I am so sounding like my mother right now, it's scary

The only thing i have to add to the previous comments is that she could be teething. Also my son did this for a while out of boredom. He is the same age as your Lo and now i try to keep him surrounded by toys or distracted by conversation and my bag is always full of dried fruit, biscotti and rice cakes. Can't ever find my keys.....

I agree with Diana, it's just typical toddler investigating behaviour. You just have to make sure you keep anything non-edible out of her reach.

Putting everything in their mouth is a baby/toddler's way of figuring out what is what! My son absolutely loves dog food for some reason and I can't keep him out of it! If it doesn't eat him first, he is going to taste it! If you are really worried about it, see if you can have her iron checked because she could be iron deficient which may cause her to have pica (eating non-edible things).
