My poor (just under) 4 month old son is feeling under the weather this week. To start things off his first tooth came through this past weekend! He started coughing a bit which has now become a nasty cough and when I took him to the hospital (his chest sounded raspy) he had a slight ear infection as well. The doc in emerg told me to just give him motrin and wait it out. I have beenn using a dry mist humidifier as well.

Looking for some suggestions to make him more comfortable. He has a stuffy nose so he hasnt been eating the greatest. This is my first baby so I am open to the advice :)

Thanks Michelle

My baby has been sick for the past week. She started out with a little cough, then it became a major, raspy cough. She has had a lot of drainage so it's also in her upper chest so her cough now is really wet. We bought some baby chest rub, vapor bath, saline wipes and saline nasal spray and we have a warm mist humidifier in her room. She has gotten over the worst of it, but we have given her just a little acetaminophen as needed. I have also nursed her in a steamy bathroom and given her warm baths and massaged her sinuses in the tub. It's no fun with a sick baby...hope he's better!

Try putting salinex in his nose which will unblock everything and then use that little pump ( it's like then one they use at the hospital when the baby is born ). I'm a mom of to my oldest is 20 months and my youngest is 3 1/2 months. When my youngest daughter was 2months she was hospitalize with bronchilits which is like a pneumonia. Try lifting his crib mattress and when he cough help him by tapping him on his back to help the mucus come up. Also give him a warm bath with the johnson vapor ( it goes in the bath) that should help clear his noise. Hope this help and hang in there it's not easy seing are kids get sick.

Thanks everyone! I took him back to the Dr yesterday and they have placed him on Antibiotics which is really starting to help! The poor thing just cut his second tooth two days ago too, so he really is having a bad go at it!

Thanks for the suggestions I am willing to try them all!!

a nasal aspirator is a handy thing to have in the medicine cabinet :) its one of those wee soft bulb thingys that you gently squeeze and then put the wee soft rubber tube just a weency bit up bubs nostril and then suction the mucous out. Realy helps to clear it out and is very gentle. For centuries mothers have been sucking the mucous out of thier bubs nostrils using thier own mouth, this has the same action but not so icky hehehehe

I have a friend who cut out wheat and dairy because her child had frequent ear infections and was possibly going to have to have surgery, and the dietary changes resolved her issues completely without surgery.

I hope he feels better soon. If you are breastfeeding, you might try cutting dairy out of your diet as dairy can cause congestion (my ds and I both find that to be the case, and it's looking like the baby has the same issue). If using formula, you might talk to the doctor about a non-dairy type but remember most doctors know very little about food allergies.

Hey. Its horrible when they arnt well. My 4mth old daughter hasnt been well for the last week and a bit. She started coughing when I was shopping and I didnt think anything of it, then had a fever. I gave her panadol and put her to bed then an hour later heard her gasping and I ran in there and she wasnt breathing so I blew in her face and she took a breathe then threw up all this flemm on me. It was scarey as I took her to the Dr, he said its a cold and didnt give me anything. So all i have been doing is saline spray up the nose (it really helps coz she cant suck her dummy and breathe out of her nose), panadol, a vapouriser (its dif from a humidifier I have one of those too - google it) in her room and vicks on her chest and back. I also raised her matress in her cot so her head was higher then her feet so she wouldnt chock again. Ive been sleeping on the floor in her room for the week coz im so scared shell stop breathing again. Good luck with it. She wasnt getting any better, i went to the doctors 3 times and last friday id had enuf so i went in again and demanded something. They gave me something to loosen up the mucas in her chest and nose and now shes great!! Be persistant if your worried and good luck it sucks!

Your poor little guys is getting it all at once! I am a mom of two, with my youngest being 4 months old. He developed mild pneumonia last month, which fortunately antibiotics cleared up. Now, he got a bit of a cold but the cough is just lingering. Very wet, chesty cough. Suggestions for you....... try raising his crib mattress slightly to elevate his head somewhat; I have also found that the saline nose drops work well to keep the nostrils clear; I also use Motrin, but only at night because it lasts 8 hrs. I use Tylenol through the day, because apparently Motrin can be a bit harder on their stomach ; Lastly, try running a hot shower and close the door to get the bathroom steamy. Take him in the steam for a few minutes and it should help loosen the mucous in his chest. I hope that helps a bit! There's nothing worse than a little one that can't tell you how they feel....I hope he is better soon :)
