Hello moms,

My daughter had a 103 temp for about 4 days and has been VERY grouchy and not sleeping at all! I took her to the doctor and they said just keep giving her infant tylenol and that it is just "viral." Her fever is now gone, but she still isn't sleeping hardly at all. She wakes up every half hour crying through the night. She is soooo tired but just keeps fighting sleep. She is also rubbing her eyes and face so much that she has a rash and red area across her cheeks and nose. She is normally the happiest baby ever and I don't understand why she is still not acting like her normal self since her fever is gone. I researched online that it could be teething (she only has her two bottom teeth) but I don't feel any teeth!!! Has anyone gone through this? I want my sweet girl back!

Most childhood viral diseases start with a fever, and then the actual disease only manifests once the fever is gone. I would google "fifth disease" or "slapped cheeks" if I were you... may be helpful.

My little one had a temperature for 3 days and waking up crying during the night. Did the doc check down her throat? My baby had tonsilitis but the doctor didn't pick up on it - only when we went to hospital. He was very grumpy indeed until the antibiotics kicked in.

make sure you are still giving the paracetamol plus nurofen (or brufen) because she may still have pain even though the temp has gone, and that will help her sleep, also get advice about the exact dose of paracetamol (tylenol) you can give for her weight, as the bottles always under dose. People stop the pain killers once the temp has gone but they may still have a sore throat/ears etc so keep giving it as will not do any harm.

My son did the same thing when he had 5 teeth all erupt at the same time about a month ago. He also got a cold at the same time - not fun! Just make sure to give her plenty of fluids and something cold to chew on if she's interested (my son would chew and suck on just a wet facecloth quite contently; we also got these little handheld plastic things from Nuby at ToysRUs that you could put frozen berries in and they chew on them through a little mesh end on the handle, he loved that too!). Giving her the baby tylenol at night might help her sleep a little better too, we also coslept for a few weeks, until he was over the worst of it.

My daughter was born Oct 23, 2010 and she is having the same kind of thing. She has been teething but her fever was high for 3 days. The doctor said that her throat was red and sore and that's why she wasn't eating. They put her on antibiotics and her fever came down soon after. I think it was a combination of teething and coming down will something.

YES! It is teething, believe it or not. My son has monthly bouts of this and we are going through one again. It is really unbelievable and you really do think that something else must be wrong because no baby should scream for that long, but, in a few days, baby is back to normal. Definitely orajel, tylenol, frozen teething rings and, I have been recommended to use pretzels. They say the salt factor helps with the gums....

GOOD LUCK!

The reason your child is most likely getting sick is from teething not that teething will make then sick but they are chewing on everything and there for more germs are also going in there mouth. my daughter was cutting two teeth at the same time had an ear infection and was sick and had a 103 temp. for about 2 months she didnt sleep she was up every 45 mins.the temp came and went. I was so tired specially since she had been sleeping thru the night since she was 3 weeks old I was not used to getting up so much.. I'm sure your child is just teething and they can take awhile for them to cut sometimes

Thanks for all your advice ladies! It has been two weeks and still no teeth. I don't have a clue if she is teething or not. She is back to her happy self for the most part. Still not sleeping well at night. I am hoping it is just a phase!

Not to scare anyone, but I watched a show recently where the pediatrician said something was viral and it turned out to be a parasite in the child's intestines. Keep a watchful eye for vomiting, diarrhea, etc. I'm one of those overprotective moms that doctors probably hate (or love, because of my frequent visits and therefore frequent co-pays). Maybe I shouldn't watch those baby shows!

I am going through the same thing. He is definitely teething but no teeth are visible. He also has diarrhea. His doctor told me to rub Benadryl on his gums and this should soothe him. He tends to be cranker at night.

Definitely sounds like teething on too of a viral infection. My daughter just got over her cold, and has been teething like crazy for the last 3 months. She now has 10 teeth. Even though you don't feel them, they can be there. Do her gums look swollen? We elevated her mattress a bit so she wouldn't get any post nasal drip...she woke up for about 4 nights in a row but is now sleeping through the night again. Also, my doctor told me to give her 2 bottles of watered down juice a day on top of what she eats. The more clear fluids, the quicker it will help get rid of the cold. We also gave her tylenol about 30 minus before bed to help her teeth and cleared her nose out. Hope your little one is feeling better!

We just did 2 weeks ago. Doctor said the same thing - virus. But at the end of the fever, she had cut a new tooth! But every child is different...

Yup....my daughter also went through this a couple of weeks ago.....but she had 4 teeth coming through which was probably painful!!! :( She would just cry at her hardest and scream and would wake up all throughout the night. We would just have her in her stroller, that was the only way she would fall back asleep and push her around then transfer her to the bed....It was a tough time but it will pass...also people say if you use orajel, it makes the gums tough and harder for the teeth to come out :0

How terrible for your little one and you. I feel stressed just reading this. I havent' experienced this. Taelyn has woken up occasionally around midnight lately I think due to teething, but no temp and only mild fussiness. I hope she is feeling better! Hang in there.

Even if you don't see any teeth they might be coming down. When my son started teething he got a fever and ear infection, the second teething he just got a fever. Try the HUMPHREY'S Teething tablets and Monell's Teething Cordial plus frozen teethers. I've used them all on my 9 month old and haven't had any problems.

YES and am still going through it although her teeth came out. its okay they are in the stage when they prepare to walk and they have to shed that baby fat in order to do that. my baby's sickness lasted for 1 full week and she is getting better now but her apetite is not there yet. take heart it will soon be over.

I am also guessing teething. Pretty much all doctors say teething does not cause fevers, but most moms will tell you otherwise. You could try teething tablets, they are herbal and disolve super fast and help lots of babies. I have also heard frozen bananas are great for during the day pain. Like the other person was saying you aren't going to feel the tooth until the pain is gone. When my guy is teething and it makes it hard for him to sleep I give him Tylenol at bedtime, it seems to help take the edge off so he can sleep through the night. I hope she starts to feel better....teething sucks! Of course if this keeps up I would go back to the doctor and get a little pushy for some better answers.

Sounds like teething. My son never ran a temp, but his sleeping habbits got all thrown off. We ended up co-sleeping with him until we got through the rough stage (2 weeks or so). Once his teeth broke through, he was happy immediately, and we gradually got him back to his crib all night. You won't feel teeth points until their teething pain is already gone. The gums get inflamed and sore several weeks- sometimes months before the teeth actually emerge. My son's sleep didn't get thrown off until a couple weeks before the teeth broke through, so hopefully you're almost there. Oh, and his reaction to every tooth has been different, so there's never any telling how they'll handle the next one. My boy has 4 so far and is working on more- just lots of chewing so far. Good luck, I'm glad her fever is down at least.
