Advice on diaper rash, please?

My 17 month old has had a diaper rash for a couple weeks now. I've been alternating each diaper change, between using baby powder and Desitin Extra Strength. It'll start to fade, but she sleeps through the night and during her morning diaper change, the rash will be back in full force. Is there another type of cream I could try, or should I take her to the doctor? Her previous rashes haven't lasted quite this long and I know she's uncomfortable; she cries during bathtime because the water hurts her rash. Help?

I see your post was in April and it's now May. Were you able to get the right treatment? Did you take her to the doc, and if so, what did he say? I've only ever used Johnsons baby powder on my little one. I believe in keeping the area dry, rather than smeared with all sorts of creams. She has only ever had one really serious rash, and I used Sudacrem (grey tub with a white and red label). It says it's for eczema as well. I also use it on my little girls chin when she gets a dribble rash from teething and it soothes the redness really quickly.

I would ditch the baby powder and alternate with Aquafor instead but a couple of weeks is a long time. It could be a yeast infection. My daughter had chronic yeast and when untreated may become a UTI. At this point I would go to the doctor.

I thik she might have a yeast infection, take her to the doctor so that he gives you prescription. Also you can give her yogurt with live bacteria cultures to help.

I know this post is old and I hope you daughters rash is gone but I thought I would mention for future reference that wipes are often the cause of rashes. They have all sorts of chemicals and fragrances added to them which can irritate the skin. A damp wash cloth instead of a baby wipe may help solve the problem. Also allowing a baby 'naked' time to dry out the diaper area can really help. Yeast (which some others mentioned) loves to grow in warm, moist places. So allowing a baby to dry out can help prevent the growth of yeast.

Im agreeing with the rest , however I would consult ur dr. before using any of the over the counter monistat etc... My daughter alos had/has this awful rash lasting nearly 2 months now and took her to the dr. ...turns out its not even a rash its eczema on her tushy! they gave a perscription cream for it and recomended when its diaper rash and eczema to mix desitin / perscrip cream / hydrocortazone (itch relief) and rub that on fallowed up with a layer of Vaseline. it works wonders! but my daughter has many skin allergies that causes the rash to reappear every few days :(

i agree with the others that mentioned that it if its been going on this long it may be a yeast rash. you don't need a prescription cream, any over the counter anti-fungal with work, such as monistat or lotrimin (athletes foot cream). also, increasing the good bacteria in babes diet will work wonders...things like yogurt or a probiotic supplement work great.

If it is a red & bumpy rash it might be a yeast infection & this wld explain why it is not going away - normal creams/powders can make it worse. A special cream from your dr is the only thing that will treat a yeast infection properly.
But if it is just nappy rash you can't beat corn flour/corn starch. I buy it from the supermarket & put it straight into a plastic shaker (like the ones you put cocoa powder, icing sugar or spices in). I sprinkle it onto my daughter's bottom & use the new nappy to gently pat it into her skin.
I have also used it on a dribble rash under her neck that was getting worse with the moisturiser which our dr told us to put on it. Within 2 days of using the corn flour it had nearly gone.
The other simple but important thing you can do is to dry her bottom after you wipe her. Baby wipes & even just wet face cloths leave the delicate skin moist & this is often the cause of nappy rash. The easiest way to combat this is to ensure you dry her skin gently after you clean it. I use face washers to clean my bub - I only wet half of it & use the other half to dry her. My husband hates the face washers to clean her so he uses unscented baby wipes to clean her then just pats her dry with a dry face cloth.

She may have a yeast infection....go get an antibacterial cream at your drug store and put that one twice a day under the diaper cream...should clear it up after a week.

Vaseline it works wonders. I've used it on my daughter and she's only had 1 diaper rash and she is 1 1/2. The time she did get it someone else was babysitting.
