My son is now 10 months and I am still breastfeeding him on evenings and at night. My sister told me I should have stopped by now cause he will not want to stop on his own. Most of my friends have stop. Am I wrong for breastfeeding him for this long?

We are still breastfeeding now. Not often, but occasionally if my LO has a bad dream, or needs some extra comfort...

Not at all, the American Academy of Pediatrics states exclusive breast feeding for the first 6 months and then breastfeeding with solids added until 1 year and then as long as mutually enjoyed after that. The average age for weaning nationally is 4 years. I am a lactation consultant.

10 months is WAY TOO EARLY the world health org says at LEAST 2 yrs.....sure he is eating now but the milk has protections,,and the emotional BOND cannot be underestimated....child led weaning is best ...let him Say when he wants to stop......see post "breastfeeding older kids "---for the particulars..i am a LC......formula with cows milk is very bad ,is the greatest cause of type 1 diabetes.............................you can always PM TO me

No way! Do not let anyone pressure you into stopping!!!! Breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your child!!!! I breastfed my first daughter until she was 2.5 and put up with a lot of familial pressure to stop but continued until it was the right time for both of us. If the pressure from your family is getting to you then refrain from discussing it with them and since you only breastfeed on evenings and at night they will never have to know. Your baby is still young!

No. Breastfeed as long as you want. I plan on weening after a year... but that's because my husband and I would like to try for another and don't want to put her on formula.

Hi Jannelle,
You are doing a right thing! Breast milk is good for your baby until 1 years of age (& longer if you so choose). I still feed my baby breast milk...I am a working mom so I pump and he eats my milk from the bottle. If you worry about weaning him off, try to substitute 1 breastfeeding for 1 bottle per week. Second week there would be 2 bottles, etc.

NO NO NO YOUR NOT!!! i am still nursing my son to and he is 10 months! your sister is flat out wrong, babies/toddlers stop nursing when they are ready. some at 6 months others at 5 yrs old. no matter what anyone says there will ALWAYS be benefits to breastmilk no matter how old your baby is! usually when babies havn't weaned yet is because they just are not ready emotioanlly! you should check out the community on here called breastfeeding moms, its very helpful

Janelle you are definitely not wrong to still be breastfeeding. Like Jennifer said, babies will wean themselves which will make it a much less stressful event (especially for them). If you wean him now he'll have to go to formula. Similac just had a recall on formula because they found beetle larvae in the formula. You definitely don't have to worry about that breastfeeding. My daughter will be 11 months on the second and we're still breastfeeding 3-4 times a day. I'm gonna keep nursing till she decides she's done. Cuddling her while she nurses (especially when she wakes up and before bed) is my favorite time during the day. I'm in no hurry to give that up. Kids grow up too fast enjoy nursing as long as you can/want.

you are definitely not wrong for breastfeeding this long! all children will stop on their own. the natural self weaning age (when a child gives up nursing on their own, or with gentle encouragement) is between 2 and 7 years old, with an average between 2 and 3 years. the world health organization recommends EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding (meaning no formula, no water, no solid food) for the first 6 months of life, and continued breastfeeding until AT LEAST 2 years. the AAP recommends at least 1 year. the world average is 4 years.

breastfeeding is the natural, and normal way to feed a child. their bodies are made to digest it, and while formula is not bad, will never be as perfect as human milk. you are doing an amazing thing for your son! if you are comfortable breastfeeding until 1 year or even longer (which is awesome), your son will benefit from it, as will you.
