I'm just wondering how often i should offer milk to my 14 month old. She was exclusively breastfed until she was about 13months, and now has cows milk in her sippy cup with her lunch and after dinner, she doesn't have any in the mornings just on her cereal.

Should she be having her milk more throughout the day or is that enough? Just wondering how much milk all the other november babies are drinking???

my son drinks about 3 sippy cups a day. One when he wakes up one at nap time and one before he goes to bed. Then i give him 8 oz of juice whenever he wants it.

My little one drinks about a cup a day plus I also let her have chocolate milk I don't think it hurts. Plus the extras like cheese and yogurt.

Well I'm still only breastfeeding and plan on continuing to do so until at least 2 years. So I won't be offering any kind of animal milk until then. But she gets b'fed about 5 times per day (when she wakes up, before her nap, after her nap, before dinner and before she goes to bed).

My son is 15 mths old & he has cows milk for breakfast on his cereal & 9 oz before he goes to bed. Sometimes he wakes up about 3-4am for a bottle but 3 out of 7 nights. He eats what we eat now and has water in the day and maybe 1 cup of squash as a treat

Our GI doctor recommends 16-18oz a day of whole milk (our girls are the same age). He said any more than that a day and the kids won't get enough calories/nutrition from food sources because they'll have drowned out their hunger.
We go to the specialist because even though I breastfed until now, my breastmilk is apparently quite "skim" and was the reason my daughter hasn't been gaining weight properly for nearly a year.
We're still in bottles so we can monitor the amount of ounces, but we're about to switch her to sippies. She does get slightly more milk on days where she has cereal or oatmeal made with milk, but she generally doesn't get to that upper limit of 24oz anyway.

Breanne, as long as she is nursing at least 3 times a day, there is absolutely no need for cow's milk.

its awesome that you are still nursing! the world health organization recommends breastfeeding for at least 2 years (and past that as long as mutually desired) so you rock for continuing on!

I am still breastfeeding and my daughter is 13 months. I was told she should still be getting like 2 cups of milk a day, so we started that and she still nurses no problem on top of the two cup!

I've worried about the amount as well. I've been told 16-24oz a day. We got rid of the bottle at 12 months and the dr said that if he didn't drink milk out of a cup for a month, he didn't drink milk for a month and it was no big deal as long as he was eating food with calcium, ie, yogurt and cheese. Now we don't use a bottle or a sippy cup and he just drinks 4 small cups of milk a day and loves it!

yeah, it can deplete it. I still give iron enriched cereals and liquid multi plus extra C and fish oils. also make pancakes with baby cereals and muffins and stuff. that way they are getting the iron without the milk depleting it. and if making chicken fingers or fish sticks can use a bit of the cereals as breading (mixed with whatever else you want). also was told somehow potassium can counteract sodium so if giving stuff with some sodium to give stuff high with potassium. all too confusing to keep up with!

i was told by the not to give my daughter to much milk because when she when in for her check up her iron levels was low so the the doctor told to not to give her to much try to give her things with iron i them an d milk don't have it.

He eats baby oatmeal mixed with applesauce and a yogurt...around 10 he has a snack, then lunch at 12...he has learned that he will only get food in the mouth if he keeps his hands down...he loves to grab at the spoon, though...we made beef stew last night and he loved the broth, meat, and veggies...

Elizabeth I am so curious now. what else does he have for breakfast? we're still doing the boring cereal fruit milk and then bottle and maybe some bagel after or blueberries. is he eating like full on eggs and stuff for break? and I am impressed you can get soups into him. my twins used to love it but now they jsut want to grab the spoons (they'd hold 5 if I'd let them) and feed themsleves.

My 13 mo old gets about 6-8 oz in a sippy in the morning (however, he rarely drinks more than 1-2oz) and 8 oz in a bottle at night...we are having trouble getting him to drink anything during the day...thankfully its winter and i can make soups and get him enough fluids that way!

@ Tina Hills
I couldn't get my lo to drink any other line of milk until I have him some of my tea. I drink tea all the time so guess that my milk kinda tastes like it.
Is there something you drink all the time?

because I don't think dr's know much about nutrition! when they say doesn't need it they probably mean she is physiologically able to sleep through the night.

i dont get why doctors tell everyone different things :( and it has nothing to do with how the baby is doing becuase they didnt even check.
they told me homo milk two times a day, one in the morning one before bed and no more giving her milk in the night, she doesnt need it

christina I sleep trained my twins at about 5 months. it can be done if you are up for it. now one sleeps from about 7-8 or later (sometimes I have to wake her) and other same bedtime but early riser (like maybe 6-6:30.

re: dropping the bottle it was actually easier to do than I thought. still nerve wradking for me but easier in the sense that it worked. my son tended to wake around midnght or 1 am for a feed. soemtimes 1 oz sometimes 8. so I got to him before he woke (about 11) and picked him up without waking him and gave him a bottle then placed him back. dropped an ounce each night. the first night I was terrified it wouldn't work but it did. there were a few other things we did as well but that was how we were told to handle the middle of night feedings.

aren't you exhausted??!!

My 14 month old has milk in his sippy cups with his meals, but only tends to have a few sips. I felt he should be having more so in between meals a couple of times a day he gets about 7 oz of heated up whole cows milk in a bottle. And one right before bed as part of bedtime routine. It seems to work for him. He also gets 1 or 2 bottles in the night, which I think he should be done with, but the doctor says it's natural and he probably needs it so we still do it. If I can get him back to sleep without it I do try. Anyways, hope that helps. It's great that all of us moms can compare notes and share what's working and ask questions. I know I have mine!

she'll get it. good for oral motor skills as opposed to regular sippy cup (apparently -who really knows). took a couple days with my twins to get it but they LOVED it once they did. and its pretty cute in the beginning to watch. like how can these little creatures taht are still teeny tiny babies to me suddenly be drinking from a straw and laughing about it. can get them to drink chicken soup from it when sick but milk...absolutely not having it! and need to find a good one that doesn't leak. figure that'll cost a good litle chunk.

Thanks everyone, i've measured it out and she's only getting 5 oz twice a day and most days she doesn't even drink it all. I've decided to add another 5 oz in the morning after her breakast and see how she goes.

Mine drinks 8 oz in the morning and that's it. Her ped said that between 1 and 2 they should have between 16 and 24 oz a day and it should never exceed 24 oz. I don't like the idea of adding so much saturated fat to her diet so I give her less and use other healthier fats the rest of the day.

oh, if some days are off and your child wants more, I wouldn't worry. especially since you were bf.

our ped said 16-24 oz. I offer 6.5 3 times a day and don't worry if they ge it all or not. jsut the nigh one is really important to me. they also suggested offering solids first then the bottle or sippy cup oin order to get them used t the idea of solids and not as reliant on bottles.

no more than 20 oz :) my girl has one sippy in the morning with milk (if she wants that... i let her pick from the fridge OJ or milk) and she gets milk at nap time and water the rest of the day.... especially if she wants something at bed time just water :)

My 13 month old is drinking about three 8 ounce bottles a day. He was breastfed until he was 5 months and then switched to formula. We gradually faded into milk, mixing 2 ounces of milk with 6 of formula and so on until he was all milk. He actually drinks water after lunch in his sippy and again after dinner, so it's not all milk all day.

are you breastfeeding at all anymore or is she completely weaned? if she is still nursing, 3 nursing sessions throughout the day are enough to completely skip cow's milk all together.

if you weaned her, 15/16 oz daily of whole cow's milk is the recommendation for a babe her age.
