My son is now almost 16 months. He is showing he understands (at least somewhat) about using the potty, He takes his diaper off by himself when he pee's and if I ask him if he needs to potty he knows what I'm talking about. I am trying to get things at least started with potty training. However I don't know the best way to teach him to pee...Should I teach him to sit just to start out to give him the general idea & then work on the details when he is a little bigger since he is so small now or should I teach him to do it standing from the start like he should when he is older. I have heard lots of goods & bads for both sides... Advice or suggestions please?!? Thanks!!!

Sitting is usually less messy unless he is closer to the top of the growth charts. Then they really are not too comfortable on most potty chairs. Just watch that he does not hurt himself on the protector. If you decide to teach him to go standing then you can try the cheerios trick to help with him aiming.

there is a potty training urinal that adjusts in height and might be easier for your son. if he sees his dad peeing standing up then he will probably want to do the same. i have been putting my son on the big potty for a couple months now and i have been considering buying the urinal because he sees and wants to stand. i cant remember the name of it but if you just google "potty training urinal"

My son is 16 months and I have been putting his on the potty since he was about 9 months old. I am starting to be more consistent now that he is old but he loves his potty. I started with sitting and will worry about standing later.

My son is 16 months and when I do start potty training, I think I will teach my son to sit first. I don't mind teaching him twice. My husband actually sits down at home to pee most times. He says its because he's lazy and doesn't really see the point in aiming when you don't have to! I have a very clean bathroom because of it! lol

I think all men should sit to pee, that way maybe us ladies would not have to clean up such a mes...LOL I know, I am just joking..please don't start hating on me...My son is going to be 3 in May and I am having a rough time training also. He sits to pee, and we taugh him to point it down, so I have recently started putting him in big boy undies and he cries when he pees on himself, so I was thinking he might STOP...only on day 3 and today we have had 4 wet undies and 2 poopies...ugg...PATIENCE right :)

Just thought I'd update that my little 3 year old is now standing to pee -whoo-hoo! We went to visit my granma yesterday and I asked him if he'd like me to bring his seat or his stool & he wanted his stool & stood to pee while we were there twice. He has also been standing to pee at daycare now too! I think he just needed a little confindence before he would do it consistantly!

I have 4 boys. Three of which are potty trained. I have taught them all to stand up and potty. My youngest is in the 30th percentile in his height and he can reach most stools. If not he stands on my feet. We have a stool at home and he goes completely by himself. Just my experience....sometimes its messy but its worth not training twice.

I taught my now three year old to potty sitting down.. then when summer came and he asked to go potty I took him over to a tree, pulled down his pants and told him to pee. He loved it! He learned to pee standing up (after the first few times we started working on aiming at a certain point on the tree or trying to "drown the ants".. poor ants lolol).. It worked amazingly :) The only *problem* is now that when he is outside and needs to pee he will drop his pants to his ankles and pee.. no matter WHERE he is :) We are NOW working on peeing behind the tree or a building.. But it is too cute with his little behind just shining for the world.. no shame lol :)

I'm not really starting him on potty training just yet..I was just gonna work with him on it some since he showed he understood some about using the potty, so I figured I could show him but I'm not really worried if he gets it just yet or not. I know he understands cause when I ask him if he needs to potty he either shakes his yes or no, & gets to go the bathroom but I know it will be a while before he can really get the whole process & how to do it right but he has just always been ahead with things, so I was just gonna work with him on it some...I just wasn't sure the best way... But yeah I knew it was kinda early but I figured if he was interested might as well give it a shot...lol

I would teach him sitting and then the standing can come later. My 3 yo does not stand to pee yet. 16 months is young for potty training, but if you think he's ready no harm in trying! My 15 month old was peeing on the potty after his bath each night for about a week, but hasn't done this in a while. I may try to potty train him a bit early since I have vacation for a week in July, but we aren't going anywhere. With my older DS I used the 3 day potty training method by Laura Jensen and it was great! She says most kids can be trained when they are 20 months old. My little one will be just 20 months old in July, so I may just give it a try and see how he does with it. My older son was 29 months old wehn I potty trained him.

My sister taught her son sitting down, he's 5 now and still does it sitting down. Her husband will teach him standing once he's tall enough. He'll sometimes do it on a stool.

I've also heard of having them face the tank and straddle the toliet to make less of a mess.

My son has been sitting on the toilet (with an insert) to go to the loo for some time now. It's mostly poo, but I occassionally get a wee in there ~ it can be a little messy, but it's all progress.
Well done for trying this so early! :o)
