How soon do you pack your bag for the hospital?

I have a very specific rule about hospital bag packing: You must be packed (or at least begin packing) by 34 weeks. You never know when you will have your baby early and you want to be prepared.
I wish I could attach my list to this post of what I think you should pack since it is fairly long, but here it is and I hope it is helpful:
Hospital Bag Items:
1. Comfy underwear that is a bit big on you- more room for pad or less restricting for c-section
2. Maxi Pads- I liked the overnight with wings. The hospital will give you pads but they are very thick and you can really feel them.
3. Sweatpants- loose and comfortable, dark colors (because of the bleeding). I think you only need 2 pairs.
4. Zip Up Hooded Sweatshirt- when/if you are breastfeeding, it is easier to open up a zipper. Remember that your belly is still going to be big right after you have the baby (most people look like 5 months pregnant), so don't bring tight sweatshirts.
5. Loose T-shirts or tank tops (I lived in a wife beater, sweats, and zip-up)
6. Nursing bras- if you aren't sure if you can nurse, don't buy too many bras.
7. Socks and slippers (the slippers could come in handy when you are in labor)
8. Flip flops for the shower
9. Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and soap (buy the travel bottles). I brought a shaver as well.
10. Make-up: lip shine, bronzer, etc. Lots of people will be coming to visit so you might as well look pretty :)
11. Chapstick: your lips can get really dry while you are in labor
12. Magazines (books can be hard to concentrate on), DVD player, mp3, etc.
13. Snacks for you: the hospital gives you 3 meals a day but no snacks in between and you will be hungry!
14. Bottled water
15. Cell Phone charger
16. Camera and charger/batteries
17. Towel for shower and mini towel for labor and face (feels really good to have a nice wet towel around your neck)
18. Hair bands, headbands, etc.: can come in handy when in labor
*and don't forget any paperwork you might need to fill out for work, etc.
1. Extra change of clothing (boxers, t-shirt, etc.) in case he is in the hospital a while without going home
1. Take-home outfit
2. Car seat and Bundle Me
3. Pacifiers (if you plan to use them)
4. Ziploc bag for the baby's important papers and mementos (wrist bracelet, forms, etc.)
Tip: I used a small suitcase with wheels (instead of a duffle) so I didn't have to carry it out after I had the baby. If you can't fit everything in one bag, bring a back pack or small along since you will probably have gifts to bring home with you from the hospital.
Tip: Take as much as you can from the hospital: diapers, cloths, extra pre-mixed bottles of formula, etc.
Tip: Have husband bring the Snap N' Go to the hospital when you are ready to leave (or whatever stroller you plan to use at the beginning). I see people walking out carrying the baby in it's car seat and it is so silly. If you bring the stroller, you can put the baby in and push it out. You can also put stuff under the stroller.

Maybe because this is my third, but I don't plan on packing until at least 37-38 weeks. In all reality, most people have plenty of time when labor starts to pack a bag :) You aren't going to just rush off to the hospital the second a contraction happens!

I havent packed yet. Im 28 weeks. I havent had my shower yet so I dont have a diaper bag or anything. I guess I could pack my bag. I appreciate the list someone posted earlier. That will come in handy. Perhaps after my shower I can pack for the baby. I will be 35 weeks or so then. I suffer from anxiety so having the bag packed now would probably ease my mind a little bit.

With my first, I think I was 25 weeks and had my bag, babies bag,and my boyfriend`s bag packed ``just in case``,I didn`t end up going into labor until I was a week overdue!lol so this time,I`m not packing until at least 35 weeks or so. With this one,I still have to wash the carseat liner(it got a little dirty with the first baby) and dig out my baby clothes..lol..

I'm 35 weeks and my bag isn't packed LOL. I have the baby's bag packed and ready to go because it'd be too hard to explain to my fiance what all I want in the baby's bag should I have to rush to the hospital, but for my own bag if it's not packed IF labour begins (I'm supposed to have a repeat c-section) I can easily just get somebody else to pack it. All I really need for myself are cellphone and charger, camera and charger, pajamas, coming home clothes, toothbrush, make up bag, hair brush, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Oh and a pillow! (Seriously, bring extra pillows!)

I'm just over 29wks, got nothing packed as of yet - will get it done in the next week or so, I've just had too much stress to contend with to even think about it - was supposed to have moved into a new flat about two months ago - it's going to be another 5/6 weeks now :(

I'm planning on giving birth at a birthing center. I'll probably pack my sons bag sometime around 35 weeks or so but for myself I'm not sure what to pack since we'll only be at the center for a maximum of 23hrs post birth. I won't need much other than clothes since I'll be coming home so soon after giving birth.
I'm also afraid to pack the bag to early in fear of jinxing anything. I'm very superstitious and it makes it hard to do anything this far ahead of time.

Melinda, I know that it seems silly for people to take their babies out of the hospital in a car seat.. but some hospitals, like mine, require that you at least bring the car seat up into the room before you go home so that they can check it and make sure it is safe and not one of the styles that have been recalled. :)

My motto is "Expect the unexpected." You never know what is going to happen, and I rather be prepared than not. I'm 29 weeks and have started packing my bag recently. I want to be prepared, whether I go into labor early, or right on time. In the end, though, it's all up to you :) If you want to pack a bag now, go ahead and do it.. it'll be one less thing you have to worry about. If you feel it is too soon, then wait :) Good luck!

With my 1st I started my bags around 36 weeks but didn't finish them until the day before I went into labor (I could tell it was going to be soon)...there are so many things I wanted to take that I was still using on a regular basis.
Instead of packing a bag for baby and a bag for me, I packed a bag for delivery (comfort things, money, camera & charger, change of clothes for hubby, toothbrush, a hat for baby, etc) and a bag for the next few days (toiletries, coming home outfits for both, etc)....that way we just took one small bag in when I was in labor & got the other bag and carseat from the car after the baby was born. It was easier because here there you deliver in one room and then r moved to another so it's less stuff to be moved.
2nd pregnancies r soooo different...last time I had everything bought, set up by 28 weeks and this time I haven't done one thing!!!! I'll probably be packing as I'm in labor!

With my first I had a midwife and was planning on birthing at home ... problems sent me to the hospital so I was completely unprepared and had to have things brought to me after I was admitted. With my second I was packed at 32 weeks just in case anything happened and had her a couple weeks later. This one, I have a cerclage so it will have to be removed for delivery and will have my bags packed when they schedule the removal as it is likely I will go into labor with the removal procedure (around 37 wks).

Haha my mum came to stay for a holiday when i was 27wks with my 1st and was horrified that i hadn't packed yet!!! I ended up packing at 37wks and the day after i packed i was admitted with pre eclapsia with my daughter being emergany c section two days later! I plan on being a bit more organised this time as i have a very high chance of getting it again. I have a firend whos a midwife and she said that for me i should be packed and ready to go by 30wks because 30wks and on is most likely when pre eclampsia will kick in. She said for a normal preg maybe be ready by 34wks

lol i'll probably do it the same way i did it the first time... i packed a bag with an outfit for the baby and like two outfits for me and a couple other things right after my water broke while i was waiting for my ride to the hospital

Well i will admit to packing the baby's bag this early. I actually packed his bag when I found out I was having a boy. LOL.
I haven't packed mine though. I was just going to wait until about the last month and then put a few items like a pair of socks, some comfy going home clothes like sweats into the bag. Then as I prepare for that last week top it off with the rest.
Well that is just what I would do.
