What to expect at an 8 week ultrasound?

So I found out that I was pregnant a little over 3 weeks ago. I think I am a little over 6 weeks now. When I called the OB/GYN the nurse said that the doctor does ultrasounds first and then sets up appointments after the ultrasound. She set the ultrasound up for February 12th and said that the doctor doesn't like to do them before 8 weeks but I will only be a day off so that shouldn't matter. What should I expect to happen? I keep hearing people say that we will be able to see the baby and hear the hearbeat. Is there anything else that will occur? Will we be able to see and hear our baby? This is our first and we have no idea what to expect at our 8 week ultrasound.

The 8 week ultrasound is also to confirm your due date and is the most accurate in determining the date!!! I am now 7 weeks with baby number 5!!!!

I have had many internal ultrasounds and they are nothing to worry about. You will be so distracted by seeing your baby that I doubt you will notice much pressure or anything. WIth my first baby I did hear the heartbeat at my 8 week ultrasound but usually you cannot hear it before 10 weeks. But you will get to see it, which is just as awesome!! Good luck and congratulations!!!

I actually had mine yesterday. 8 weeks is too early to hear the heart beat but you can see it on the screen. The tech pointed it out to me. They print out a picture for you for a keepsake. It is a vaginal (internal) sono.... My best advice, make sure you hit the ladies room first but wait until you get to the doctors office to go because they are going to want a urine sample to check your sugar level. I forgot to go before I got into the room and had to pee so bad and the pressure of the sono probe made it worse! The sono tech actually made a comment because she could see how full my bladder was... Hahaha!!!! But other than that, the sono tech just points out the head, arms, legs, etc if they are visible. After the sono we sat with the doc and went over questions and concerns. It was really cool to see the baby on the screen, made it feel real. Good luck and congrats!

The 8 week appointment is very exciting. I have heard of other doctors who like to wait until 8 weeks since they want to make sure the baby is big enough to be seen on the ultrasound. It will be vaginal, which is a bit strange if you have never seen it. On the screen, you will see a very small dot inside of sack and you should see a heartbeat as well. It is very cool. The doctor will measure the sack and stuff to make sure you and the baby are healthy, and that is really it.

Don't forget to think of any questions about you and the baby (what you can eat, due date, etc.) because after the ultrasound, you will have a chance to sit with the doctor for a few minutes so you might as well take advantage of that.

Well that seems a bit strange considering most drs will first do a PAP if you haven't had one in over 1yr and then check your uterus and so on. My dr did an ultrasound mainly because i was complaining of some cramping and then scheduled my "picture & heartbeat" ultrasound this week. I'm 9 weeks now.

Your ultrasound will more than likely be vaginal. So expect some pressure at your 8 week ultrasound. They will show you the heartbeat and the baby. Make sure the size is appropriate and that's about it...i think.

Good luck and congrats!
