I just saw a nutritionist on the 19th of January. Since mypyramid.gov has zilch info on the nutrition of women carrying multiples, I thought I would post this for everyone's benefit. I mean seriously, the rate of twin pregnancy has increased by at LEAST 10% over the last 5 years, you would think the government would be on top of this. LOL.

Dairy-8 cups

Vegetables-4 cups

Fruits-7 cups

Grains-10 servings (at least half need to be whole grain)

Meat-3 3 oz portions

Eggs-2 eggs (if eggs is an aversion for you, add another portion of meat per day)

Extras-6 (this is fats, oils, and sugars)

The weight guideline is to gain approximately 0.75lbs per week in the first trimester
0.75-1lb per week in the second trimester
and back to 0.75lbs per week in the third trimester
Weight gain overall should be between 29-38lbs.
I hope that this information helps everyone, it really helped me. I kept losing weight and I didn't really know why until I found out this information. Now I have gained a total of 18 pounds this pregnancy, 3 of wich have been in the past week because I am getting the nutirition and portions I need to function, I am still about 6 pounds under where I am supposed to be, but I have total confidence that my health will be a LOT better since I found out this information.

Shame Bonnie, that's bad to not have some guidelines that suites your situation. If I were you I'd just try to make healthy choices for the most part. I too think it's ok to give in to some cravings, whether they're healthy or not so much. What fun would life be if we did everything absolutely perfect all the time?

Good luck! I'm now 13 weeks, so we're just about in the same stage of our pregnancies. (",)

Well, i have a Very different case for myself. Im only allowed to eat 4-8 ounces of food/drink per meal, because of my previous gastric bypass surgery. the dr told me to just eat what im craving...as long as it dont involve 12 donuts...and that i would gain what i needed too....but i have absolutely no help for my case at all. No one knows much about twin pregnancies and post gastric bypass patients! I have not gained one pound my pregnancy so far...but im just 14 weeks along, so things change quickly i know. I just wish i had some help for me!!! : (

Nice to meet you Elsabe, I have a revision for the weight gain chart. This is based on BMI so it will be a little more accurate.

BMI30.0-overall weight gain should be between 29 and 38 lbs.

I know that for some of you experiencing the joys of radical morning sickness that comes with carrying twins in the first trimester, this will seem hard to accomplish. Just remember to take advantage of any cravings you have before the window closes and keeps your electrolytes up with gatorade or pedialyte or Preggy Pops. I know that it is important to eat healthy throughout your pregnancy but in the first trimester, when all you seem to be able to keep down is gingerale and pickles-trust me, your OB will be happy with any weight you gain. Take advantage of the second trimester to eat your balanced healthy diet and continue into your third trimester and you should have sufficient weight gain to ensure a healthy birth weight for your babies.

ALSO: Ask your OB about whether or not you should be taking any vitamin supplements. The most commonly prescribed are Iron and Folic Acid. And check with your OB on any mineral defficiencies in your blood and have them adjust your plan accordingly. Just because you are anemic doesn't always mean that you are just lacking iron.

I'm just over 9 weeks pregnant with twins. We had our first gynae appointment and sonar yesterday and I was sooooo shocked when he told us it's twins. Still trying to recover, but anyway.... LOL!

I've noticed that since I did the pregnancy test on January 1st, I've actually LOST 2kg!! Now I'm a bit concerned about this because my weight has always been steady. In fact I used to be underweight until I had my son in March 2007. I only gained 7,5kg with him and he weighed a healthy 3.1kg at birth.

Thanks for the info, I think it's gonna help so much. (",)
