Are grandmothers really not "supposed" to throw baby showers?

I moved from my home town a while ago, and am pregnant 500 miles away from dear friends. We've been distant, so I doubt anyone would throw a baby shower, and now that I'm pregnant and married, I don't hang out with my friends here a whole lot either. Can I throw myself one? My mother is set on the etiquette that grandmothers are not supposed to throw them. This is my first child, and since all of my sister's kids are older than ten, no hand me downs. What should I do?

My step-mom is throwing mine along with help from my cousin. I didn't know that was an "etiquette" rule but I tend to make my own rules in the game of life...we don't live in 1950 anymore.

some good ideas for a baby shower is baby finger foods. A funny but kinda gross game, take some infant diapers and put a different kind of chocolate candy bar into each one and microwave so it looks like baby poo then pass each around and whoever guesses each candy bar correctly by smell, touch, or if they dare taste wins :) Another great game, take a ball of string and pass around, each person needs to cut off how much string they think it will take to wrap around your belly, the person who is the closest wins. A good party favor gift, buy some bottles from the dollar store and fill with candy or favors. These are just some ideas, I hope everything turns out great and you have fun :)

You can throw one for yourself there is nothing wrong with that. I think anyone that wants to do it and that you give permission can do it.

My grandmother threw my baby shower, and did better than anyone I could have picked, i am glad she did, she is more like my mother then my own mother is. So YES a grandmother IS aloud to give you a baby shower.. Good Luck

My mom and husband's mom threw my baby shower. Although my kids decided to come early, I wasn't actually at the baby shower, but for number 3 I will not have a baby shower, but thankfully we have most of the big stuff already. I don't see why it would be a problem throwing yourself a baby shower if no one else is willing to do so.

I say you can throw yourself one. My mom is going to help with mine. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I hope she has changed her mind. I have never heard that the Grandmother can't throw the shower. Just be careful, because if she's not quite interested is she going to give you a shower you want?? In 08 when I had my shower, I went to throw it for myself as my very best friend (of 14 years) & Matron of Honor & I had drifted apart & I could see she wasn't going to do it. When I sent out an email to my girlfriends about getting together one of my good friends insisted that I could not possibly throw my own party. So she did it with the help of a couple other great friends. So from that I'd say it's better that Grandma get in there & do it for you than you doing it yourself... Hope you have a great time & enjoy.

So I'm reading all these answers to my mother aloud and all I hear is "blah blah blah" in return. Lol. But I think I proved her wrong, and believe she has changed her mind. Thanks (:

my mother and my mother-in-law both threw me showers for my first. My friends are throwing me a shower for my second since it's the opposite gender.

My mom and 3 wedding attendants threw mine, but mostly it was my mom. Never heard the grandmother couldn't.

i've never heard of that either.. my mom and my sister are throwing mine. i honestly think its best for the grandparents to throw it cuz they know you the best and they have had kids and make the baby shower flow a lot better since they have had a baby shower before

I had never heard that grandmothers couldn't throw the baby shower either... My mom threw my baby shower and did an amazing job. She knows me better than anyone else so I couldn't have asked for more.... I do not see anything wrong with throwing your own shower.

wow, i never heard that "grandmothers aren't supposed to throw the baby shower".. my mom & fiances mom are the ones throwing me one here in a couple of days.. But if she is completely set on that.. yes, throwing your own in completely fine.. Alot of my friends that have recently had babies either had a shower thrown by their mom, or they thru one theirself, some even had one that was thrown by mom, and then thru their own with just friends .. it's whatever you are comfortable with & would like.. remember it's your day! :o)
