colouring hair when pregnant

I'm a hairdresser and coloring your hair will not affect your baby. The only thing that may happen is the color may not quite turn out the same way (most often it does though) because of hormonal changes. The reason they may not suggest a perm is because the strong smell. But other then that the beauty industry has come a long way you'll be just fine. If you work in an organic salon you will be fine.

I've heard it's fine to pretty much do whatever you want to your hair (color, perm, relax) but to be careful about breathing the chemicals in. And since you're pregnant there's a good chance your hair will react differently than you're used to to the process.

i work for a major hospital and i was told that its better to be safe than sorry since the chemical that touch your scalp can seep into your blood stream and who knows what can go on from their but.. i have friends who've done it and had no problems so its all personal judgement of risk.. i've been dying to dye my hair too!!

My doctor told me to go ahead and dye my hair. She said its only hair. So with my first and this pregnancy I have dyed my hair. There's no proof out there that says you cant.

if it's an organic salon, I would assume it's ok... My doctor told me that the main reason that people think they can't dye their hair is because in the 'oldendays' there was alot of peroxide and ammonia used in Hair colors... not so much is the case anymore, however, if you are the one dying the hair, the repeated exposure may cause health problems, I would ask you're doc :)

have been told not to use one with amonia just a semi permanent one but as for u actually colourin peoples hair i dont know hun

I have colored my hair through two pregnancies and now my third. The only thing that I noticed was because my hormones are different, when I color my hair lighter it turns out a ugly yellow color but every time I colored it darker it always came out just fine. There hasn't been enough testing done or proof that it even effects the baby. My children are both healthy smart little things. Hope that helps.

I asked the doctor about that and he said it was fine that it causes no real damage to the baby, but if you wanted to stay on the extra safe side..I wouldnt do it too too often. But it really does no damage.

I am pregnant with my second baby and I dyed my hair every month with my first baby. I was told as long as it was amonia free dye then it was fine. There is natural instincts that I use and it turns out the same color as I want. I havent dyed my hair yet with this pregnancy, but I am going to do it tomorrow. I am 18 weeks pregnant with number 2.

i hear its not.but i used an over the counter one that didnt have amonia in it.no smeel to it.i dont get my nails done,drink caffine.but organic should be gd i would think. when in dout just ask ur dr.

I've been told it's not okay.... and then told it is okay.... so I think it's just a matter of opinion really. I've colored my hair during pregnancy, and everything was just fine.

both midwives i have had and the OB i saw with my second ok'd hair dye ( not bleach, but actual color). i use a box. they all said there is no where near enough chemicals in that to harm the baby. just to leave a window open to prevent fumes from making you dizzy.

also that the hair is different during pregnancy and color may not turn out as planned. although i have dyed mine twice with my first, twice with my second and twice so far with my third and had no issues.

My doc said it was OK, but it might not turn out the way it does normally. Boy, was he right! "Burgundy Brown" came out almost black! LOL. It finally washed out to the color I expected.

I'm a colorist and I think that its ok to do highlights or a demi color, but I wouldn't put bleach or permanant color directly on your scalp. Although a girl I used to work with colored her doctors hair the entire time the doctor was pregnant, so I think its just whatever you feel comfortable doing.

I am also a stylist and my doctor told me there was absolutely no problem touching or being around the hair color or perms. She told me that unless the smell is really strong and bothering you then it isnt actually affecting you and not to worry about it because there is no hard evidence against it and who can afford to not take any chemical treatments for nine months?

There is NO proven study that an unborn child would get birth defects from dyeing your hair, BUT i know that because of the hormones the color you dye your hair may not come out the that color!!!

Well, I have colored and relaxed my hair with both pregnancies. You are right, there aren't any studies that have been done. Ask your Doctor and see what they recommend.

My doctor said it's fine...the coloring isnt as harsh as it was years ago....MOST places refuse to do it though because of the hormones when pregnant causing your hair to change funny colors....

I dyed my hair several times with my first... he is 100% normal and healty... I have wth this baby as welll and every thing is fine so far. My dr gave me the ok both times

I always heard that the chemicals are bad if they touch your skin, so I refrain from coloring my hair while pregnant. However, I recently talked to a hair dresser friend who said that while home colorings aren't good, going to a salon should be ok because they don't paint the stuff on your scalp. but I can't afford that, and so I'll make due with a few gray hairs showing for 9 months. I also don't paint my nails.

i have no idea if its okay or not to dye your hair but i did dye my hair once the first time i was pregnant and it didnt cause any harm.. also i knew someone who worked up until the day before she had her baby in a salon as a hairdresser.. and everything was fine with her baby. but yea you will just need to decide what you think is best for yourself and your baby.

I have always been told not to color or perm your hair during pregnancy because there could be side effects on the baby but I don't know for sure. If you are not sure i wouldn't do it just on the safe side.
