Anyone have advice for keeping guests entertained while opening gifts at a baby shower?
My workplace just threw me a shower and everything was wonderful. We ate, played games, chatted...and then there came the gift opening part. I didn't know I was going to be so on the spot. It felt so obligatory and boring. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to open gifts and thank everyone while I did but there was nothing for anyone to do except sit and stare. No one was really into it, they just wanted to go home and I couldn't open gifts fast enough! It was a big yawn while they waited for me to unwrap, show off, take pictures (which I just did not want to do)...to make it worse, it was so quiet with a few oohs and ahhs thrown here and there. I tried to generate convo so people wouldn't get so bored but I'm not good at it being pregnant and multi-tasking! Awkward. I was so fatigued and nervous, I couldn't remember the names of the baby items, I didn't remember to read the cards and I couldn't say my thank you's to each person without it sounding weak and rushed! It was so uncomfortable and I couldn't enjoy it :( I asked for helpers to help unwrap and move things along but everybody just left it up to me (I guess they didn't want to steal my shine??). To be frank, I was tired and it was too much work for a pregnant lady to do in front of an audience!
I have my family/friend baby shower coming up in two weeks. I think since it is my family, they'll help me out more and will be more receptive to my requests but I just don't want to be in the awkward spotlight when I'm just trying to really take the time to enjoy the gifts and appreciate the people who gave them.
Any suggestions to help it move along? Possible games? Thanks so much!
