I am 26 weeks now and at 20 weeks I had my first ultrasound. My fiance and I were sooo excited to finally find out the sex of the baby but when we got to that part of the exam all we saw was knuckles!! At first I wasn't too upset about it but then my doc told me that insurance only covers one ultrasound unless the doc saw it absolutely nec. to perform a second one. Is this right? I keep hearing stories of women getting 2 or 3 ultrasounds. Its so frustrating shopping for baby things when you don't know the sex.. :( I just want to know!

My friend is on medicaid and she has had at least 4-5 ultrasounds and medicaid doesn't pay for them unless it is needed or to do 1 gender ultrasound. She just asks for them and gets them.

Thats definatly something I love about living in Canada, I had 3 ultrasounds before my daughter cooperated, and it's all covered. Anything to do with the pregnancy is covered, except pics of the ultrasound which are $20.00 for a cd with about 20 pics on it or you can get the 3D dvds..and I think they are $50.00. I wish you best of luck and if you can't get them to schedule one, the money to have one done may just be worth it for you! :)

I've had multiple ultrasounds, but only for medically necessary reasons. Unfortunately, finding out the sex is not one of them. You can pay for it yourself, but it isn't cheap. If you choose to go to a U/S location that is not run by a really well trained doctor, it can be risky. As for the insurance, that is very likely. It is meant to be a diagnostic tool. Be very glad you don't need another, that's a good sign of a very healthy baby and pregnancy.

I understand how frustrating the shopping thing can be, kind of. I actually don't want to know, but everyone else does. You would not believe the hounding I get about this. You can always shop a little for both and save receipts.

Congrats on the healthy pregnancy and baby! Hang in there, you will know very soon.

I live in the Minneapolis area and there is a place where you can get a 2D ultrasound for $75 and a 3D/4D package for as low as $129. I mean the packages can get as high as $300 for a multi session package. I think you can just shop around at different places because it depends on where you go. There is another place in town here that is super expensive and starts at about $200 for a basic package.

I live in WI and have pretty good insurance and my 1st ultrasound was approx $700 or more before my insurance covered any of it! I do not live in a big town or go to a dr in a big town and i know its cheaper for me than other ppl i know that live in bigger cities in WI! My doctor only does ultrasounds when necessary because she realizes that going to the dr isn't cheap and unless she is worried she isn't going to make me come in just so she can get paid more! i had an ultrasound at almost 7 weeks because i was having severe pain in my side and they thought i might have had a tubal pregnancy! my next ultrasound will be at 20 weeks! theres not really any need for an ultrasound until the baby is bigger to they can measure everything and make sure the baby is growing correctly! other wise they can pretty much tell everything is ok when they listen for the heartbeat at a regular appt! since i had an ultrasound done at 6 weeks i did not get one at 12 weeks which is the common practice around here! i think your dr is correct in not wanting to give you more ultrasounds that you need and when you think about it finding out the sex of the baby isn't nearly as important as finding out everything with your child is ok! and thats probably how your dr looks at it! as i suggested before look into places in your area that do ultrasounds when you want them done at a reasonable price! also when i had my 1st ultrasound i got pics of the baby for free its just part of getting it done at my clinic! but i'm sure we will go to an outside place to get one done just so we have a dvd, cd and pics as a reminder of everything since we thought we could not have children!

I would like to know what states you all live in. I live in the northwestern part of Nebraska and when I had my 3D (4D) ultrasound to make sure that I was 14wks it cost $248.00 but the insurance company paid for most of it, and I go in for another 3D (4D) ultrasound on the 5th to find out the sex and it will prob cost another $248.00.

I have already had three and I am at 27 weeks. I think it depends on your insurance, but I know you can pay like 100 or so to get a 3d one done at an outside clinic. If you get them at a imaging center then they aren't doing anything medical so it isn't going to cost super tons. I would just search for 3D/4D ultrasound places near you and see what they offer! Good luck!

Wow sorry I just read these post 75 dollars for a pic and a dvd?? And some are more?? LOL yall need to move to Texas baby, my dvd was 3 dollars, yes that's right 3 dollars and it had sound and everything and was in 4d real time, and they gave me pics everytime we did an ultrasound free so thats weird they make you pay. It sucks in the north and in the east and west they charge WAY too much, thats absolutely ridiculous. Talk about price gouging.

Yeah and I got a dvd, I mean one of my ultrasounds was specifically to determine gender, so it took like a good 45 minutes to do the exam. She looked at bone measurements, skull measurements, length of baby, behind the neck for too much fluid(down syndrome) made sure heart was beating at a regular pace, kidneys were developing, etc. how long was this ultrasound?

Wel Im on Medicaid, and we get three. Its also weird that you had your first one at 20weeks. They are supposed to give you one the day you come in to see for themselves everything is ok. Which is usually your 8th week. Plus you have the option of getting genetic screening where they look for trisomy 18 and 19 markers as well as down syndrome and other defects. I would look into switching docs because it seems to me as if that doc office is half stepping. And I know if government insurance covers three then private ones you actually pay for DEFINTIELY cover atleast three.

you can ask the doctor, maybe if you're over 35 you can get another one. or if you want to pay for it, you can get a 4d ultrasound. i did those w/both of my kids. i bought a package and you get 2 two ultrasounds, one at 28 weeks and one at 34 weeks. i love to look at them! they give you nice pics and a dvd.

besides lying to your dr might lead to having to get a bunch of tests done which would also cost you more!

i wouldn't bother the dr with it! lying to your dr isn't going to solve anything and your not guarenteed that the baby will be cooperative at the next ultrasound! i know how you feel i go for my next ultrasound next week and NEED to know if its a boy or a girl because all we need to buy is clothes because i do daycare and have everything else! there are places that will just do ultrasounds! not sure where you live or whats available in your area but where i live there is a place called Stork Vision that you can go to to get an ultrasound done! they give you a dvd of the whole ultrasound, a cd of all the pics and some printed pics! i am going to do it if we can't find the sex out at our regular dr appt! to find out the sex and get the dvd, cd, and printed pics is only $75 and if they can't tell at that appt then you get to come in for a 2nd appt for free to find out! but i would def not lie to your dr and besides getting one done without insurance is expensive! i live in a smal town and my clinic is also in a small town and before my insurance my ultrasound was around $700 and i don't think you want to pay that much just to find out! My dr only gives ultrasounds when necessary and i agree because it can be costly! but look into if theres a place near you that just does ultrasounds! besides the fact that sometimes ultrasounds can be wrong! i know plently of ppl that have thought they were having a girl and then had a boy and visa versa!

Keep bugging the dr. They should be able to come up with some reason for it to be "medically necessary". I had two before 14 weeks and it was too early to tell. My insurance only covered two unless necessary as well. But when I asked the dr she checked out what they did and at the time they didn't see everything they needed to see (like if all the parts were where they were supposed to be). She scheduled one for the next visit! I found out I was having a girl at 28 weeks.

Some insurances wont cover a lot of ultrasounds.MOST cover three, one in the 1st trimester, 1 in the 2nd, and one in the 3rd, but that depends on your insurance. Personally I would NOT tell them your baby is not moving unless your baby really isnt moving same with the leaking fluid, neither of those are things to tell your doctor if they arent REALLY happening. Since you are 26 weeks you should be able to get a clear 3D ultrasound. Which are amazing and worth the money. I had one with my first and we had one a few weeks ago with this baby. I dont know where you live, but in my hometown they are $60 and where I live now they are $95..so it depends where you are but I would definately check into the 3D. You can see all the deminsions of your baby and actual facial features! With my son the pictures where right on with how he looked when he was born,(you know far as the shape of the nose, cheeks, chin, eyes) and the ones we had done a few weeks ago came out really clear as well so Im curious to see how close these ones are too. :)

You can always go the I'm not feeling my baby move route, or you can schedule a 3d sonogram! I'm not sure where you are but I know where I live they only cost 125 and you get dvd's pictures and get to see the sex it's a great experience. When I did mine they told me the wrong sex at my drs appointment then we seen the real thing in 3d and the pictures I got couldn't have looked more like him when he was born.

Just tell your DR. that your baby isn't moving as much and you want to get another one to check on the baby! Either that or tell them you think you are leaking fluid. Then they will have to do a Biophysical Profile on the baby ( ultra sound where they check all the measurements of the baby and the fluid!) That should do the trick.
