Dr. just called and explained that my glucose test yesterday (28 weeks)revealed I have a very low iron count, and diagnosed me as having Anemia? :S She told me to pick up Ferrous Gluconate and wants me to take 300 mg 2x daily... just googled this medicine and it's not advised to take while pregnant... Wondering if anyone has expeiriance with this? And maybe would it be safer just to take 2 prenatals daily?? I haven't noticed any side effects besides being tired..which I attributed to my last trimester.. Please if anyone can give any advise, I'm going to pick the meds up now - as I assume Dr. knows best.. but would like to hear from other mothers who have expeirianced this? Also should I be worried about baby???

Well, I was low on iron with my daughter as well, but Iron was my cure.. never heard of the medicine you spoke of. I would just talk with your dr, since it clearly states not safe for pregnant women..im sure there is more than one soloution...

i also have very low count of iron, and i got given fersaday by the doctor and to take 1 2 times a day and they seem to be fine, but have to have something to eat before you take it otherwise you be sick and cant take it with any drinks with caffine in it only water, if your so worried why dont you ask them to prescribe you to different tablets instead and see what they say, or go to the hospital and ask them about it? here if you need a chat

I also have extreme iron deifiency anemia (not due to pregnancy, but it gets significantly worse). I am 33 weeks and a few months ago I was put on a prescriptioned high dose iron supplement called Palafer to try and get my iron up before I go into labor. (I was induced with my first baby because they wanted to be ready for a transfusion because my blood was so low....thank goodness it wasn't needed!) There is no reason to worry about the baby because the baby will take all it needs from you and leave you with the rest, which is why you are so tired! And Kaitlin is right, if you are low on iron there is no risk to take iron supplements during pregnancy. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon :)

I have had anemia during my pregnancies and take iron pills for it. You can also increase your iron naturally by eating iron rich food, but you have to be very diligent about it and make sure you are consuming enough. Taking 2 prenatals won't help you- it will give you too much of other vitamins and not what you need (specifically iron).
The reason iron is cautioned during pregnancy is because you can essentially get iron poisoning- but that's if you are already getting too much iron. Some people take iron without being anemic for other benefits, and if you do this while you aren't pregnant, it's no big deal, but if you are pregnant and are getting too much, it can cause some issues for baby. BUT If you don't have nearly enough, and are anemic, it is not an issue. If you are really concerned, talk to your doctor about taking 300 mg once a day instead of twice.
Side effects of taking iron pills will probably include a little more consitpation and dark green stools- counter with fiber and foods like raisins and prunes and apples :D YUM.
