I'm 20 years old and I'm pregnant with my second child. Since having my first one almost 4 years ago, I've started smoking and I also smoke marijuana and have taken the occasional pill. I found out I was pregnant at 2 months, and I was smoking cigarettes and getting high on pills and marijuana a lot (I was staying with my then boyfriend, now fiance at the time so my daughter was spending all week with her dad except one night a week.) I'm not here to be told how bad drugs are, so please refrain. The Medicaid in my town is backed up and so I just now got a call saying my card is being sent out soon (i'm 5 months), so I haven't seen a doctor yet. My question is, do you think the cigarettes and drugs in the first 2 months caused a lot of damage to my baby? I stopped as SOON as I found out I was pregnant.

I love how everyone has an opinion on this - many without thinking critically about what it is they're saying. For one, why do we all assume that smoking pot is bad but taking a pill for nausea is somehow better because you bought it at a pharmacy? I'm sorry but the latter is actually a DRUG bought at a DRUG store, while the former is a plant that came from the ground.

I smoked pot fairly regularly when I got pregnant with my first child and continued to smoke once a day through the first trimester. I did this not because I'm careless but because I could not eat anything to save my life. Pot is the only way I was able to swallow the vitamins and get food in my body. I'm college educated, married and make a six-figure salary. (I only say this to give you an idea of my home life and demographic, which also is not stereotypical.)

I quit in the second trimester when I was feeling better. My daughter was born a healthy 10 lbs 1 ounce without one bad report on her health. She is now 4 yrs old and I just today had a conversation with her preschool teacher who told me she is far advanced in her writing and math abilities. She is also bilingual, extremely pleasant, energetic and incredibly beautiful.

My only comment here is: Don't be so quick to judge something you probably don't know much about.

What kind of pills? Now for ciggs a lot of women smoke and there babies are just fine. As for weed...it's not gonna do any harm. I don't care what any person says. There has been a TON of research put into marijuana. The effects of marijuana are beneficial to a person in so many ways.... so I wouldn't worry about that AT ALL! I do a lot of research myself on drugs...mainly on marijuana and its benefits to the human body....And guess what people new results in, it helps grow new brain cells amongst many many many other benefits. So really I wouldn't worry at all about that! But really as for the pills it depends on what your are taking and how much. Certain pills can cause deformities and birth defects ....I would recommend researching some your self or talking to a DR. http://www.erowid.org check this website out for tons of info it might be helpful. Good luck, I hope you and your baby are doing well!

I'm currently pregnant with my first, and I smoke pot. Before anyone talks sht, I will tell you, I am considered "successful" and "educated" with a "stable relationship." Personally, though, I just like to make informed decisions.

Having said that, there's plenty of sound research to help you figure out that weed doesn't de facto cause harm, but it "can" cause harm with the biggest problem being low birth weight.

I am in my second trimester and do not plan on smoking from here on out, simply because there's no need to. However, during my first trimester, weed helped me survive, literally. I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Grvidarium, in/out of the hospital with marihuaana being the only thing that helped.

The best you can do is talk to your doctor who can help you make an informed decision regarding your baby.

Congrats!! :)

Smoking and pregnancy can’t mix altogether, as smoking can expose carbon monoxide to the baby, so the supply of oxygen is limited in order to deliver sufficient nutrients. Smoking is believed to shut down progesterone receptors in the body. Smoking has also been shown to trigger premature menopause and increase infertility in younger women. Honestly no one can truly know that. Its good you stopped asap. Maybe for good I hope. However the first 3 months of pregnancy is the development of your baby. So yes something could be not developed right. But that's the science in the creation of a baby. Their are woman who don't do anything and have a baby with a birth defect. I'm sure you'll know more at your ultrasound. 5 months.... I'd think you'd should have seen a doctor by now.... I hope they can squeeze you in soon

@ JamieLeigh Hemminger
I'm 20 and pregnant as well. I've always had on and off issues with pills since 16 and didn't find out I was pregnant until 8.5 weeks. I too stopped immediately and sought some counseling, but still worried sick about the damage i could have done to my unborn baby not even knowingly. Thankfully, I have made it through half of my second trimester, had extra extensive ultrasounds and every single genetic test i could afford and was upfront and honest with the doctor from the very beginning. My advice is to be totally open about all and any drug or alcohol use even if it was only one time, esp since they can label your pregnancy high risk and your babys health and development will be watched more closely. Now im 20 weeks and everything is perfectly fine and normal with my little girl. Not saying its okay to use or smoke weed while pregnant but plenty of idiots willingly and knowingly use drugs throughout their pregnancies and by some miracles their kids turn out okay. Just get some good prenatal care and take care of yourself from now on and everything should be fine

I was 1 monthz when i found out when i was pregnant and i smoked everyday. Even after i found out i was still smoking but i stopped when i had to go to the hospital, it wasnt because of the marijuana tho, i was just freaked out cuz i was bleeding, but it turned out i had blood between the baby and the placenta. So i was almost 2 monthz when i stopped smoking, but the dr's say that my baby is really healthy and my mom said she smoked the whole time she was pregnant and therez nothing physically wrong with me so i think ur baby should be ok.

You just put in your last period date and it will work it all out for you.

dont fret doll. your baby should be fine since you quit as soon as you found out BUT you must tell your doctor even though you might not like what he/she has to say. i will tell you now though, in my state if you confess to using drugs or drinking while pregnant they will test your baby when they are born and if the baby comes up positive for any of these tests then they will bring in a dhs officer and you will get a neglect mark on your record. you will not be able to work in a daycare or school or any place with young children. they might not press charges since you confessed but they will make you go to drug/alcohol counceling. if they are really strict or what you did is severe enough they might even take your child away but that is very VERY rare. so do what's best for your baby and tell your doctor everything. don't be selfish.
hope this helps =] if you have anymore queastions visit my community and talk to me there (sugar mamas)

My friend's mother smoked pot and smoked when she was pregnant with him. He was born blind. The first few months are crucial to the child's development. Good thing that you stopped immediately when you found out though. Best of luck!

You should be okay. The sooner you stop, the better. Just get to a doctor as soon as you can, prenatal care is key. In the meantime, grab some Prenatal Vitamins w/DHA at Walgreens, CVS, or Target. Be sure you get the ones that have two bottles in the package, one w/the prenatal vitamin and one w/DHA vitamin.

Congratulations and good luck!

Well no one can really say...I know a girl that smoked weed and did pills the whole time she was pregnant. Child came a little early (one week) weighed normal, and was "ok". But who is to say until he gets older if he has learning dissabilities or anything. Anywhos with that being said, everyone is differant. Since you stopped as soon as you found out (which I am getting you where about 8 weeks pregnant) you should be Ok but I am not a dr...Now about the smoking (ex smoker) they told me to try to quit, (or limit as MUCH as possible) because smoking MAY cause low birth weight, placenta abruption, placenta previa, Sudden Infant Death Syndrom, preterm labor, stillbirth, colic, respritory infections, your water breaking early, miscarriage. (this is what my dr said ) my mom also has 4 children she smoked with everyone except me. I came out perfectly healthy, no asthma nothing. My siblings because my mom smoked, where born early, and had major health issues when born...

I don't agree with drug users/drunks recommending not to tell the doctor about the drug use and/or drinking. Too bad if what the doctor has to say may make these moms feel like crap in response to the doctor's statement of the risks to the babies, which the doctor is obligated to discuss with his patient or he would be negligent. You should definitely fully disclose anything that can affect the baby.

Several moms have said they were or their children were born completely healthy despite drug use/drinking, yet they or their children have ADD, learning disabilities, other issues like anger issues (controlled by the frontal lobe of the brain), etc. There is a strong possibility that these issues were caused by or were at least worsened by the in utero drug use/drinking.

For those of you that stopped using/drinking upon finding out about being pregnant, that was definitely the responsible, difficult thing to do.

The pot i highly doubt it will effect your baby. I known of people who have smoked pot their whole pregnancy and nothing happened, as well as cigarettes but cigarettes i would be more worried about than pot. as for the pills i would talk to your doc about. Just a little advice when your on medicaid they some doctors will see you and sometimes the insurance will go back 6 months and cover it. I know it does here in Kansas. Good luck and i hope everything works out!

but if you tell the doctor they judge very fast and treat you alot different, it has happened to many ofmy friends and friends of friends, and they all suggested not to tell your doctor because they make you feel like crap and its really not worth it becuse they all had healthy babys. i put it down to luck aswell sometimes but its also the amount you smoke.

im pregnant with my first child and i have smoken weed threw this pregencey but which is mostly so i can eat or stop spewing, im a high risk pregencey so im sick all the time and throw up more then i eat so weed helps alot. im not saying its a good thing to do im just saying sometimes things arnt as big as the seem sometimes you need to do something bad to become good.

I wouldnt stress about it until I saw my OB... Dont know If you have yet or not... I know a girl that smoked weed, cigs, and drank HEAVILY thru her WHOLE pregnancy... and SHE KNEW SHE WAS PREGO... Her son is about 2.5 years old, and has been "normal" so far... I told her that it was a blessing that he doesnt have to suffer for her being ignorant... She should have been arrested...

I, like you, had the cigs, weed, and pills thing goin on... but I also quit once I found out I was expecting... I have been to my OB many times, and my angel is developing very well... My EDD is August 14... She is a lil big for her fetal age, but OB says its ok...

So, dont worry hun... Its all in GODs hands....

In the first two months of pregnancy a lot is developing from cells in the brain, to everything in the body...fortunately things grow very quickly and can be replaced very quickly as well...so I think your okay. I found out when I was 5 weeks and had gotten drunk and things like that and they told me not to worry. I'm now 20 weeks and everything is normal. Good luck to you sweetie!

everyone else already gave a lot of good info, so i'll just tack on what i didn't see below. i smoked cigarettes, off & on, throughout my pregnancy. (i've really struggled with quitting even still, but thankfully she was born perfectly healthy.) i also drank caffeine, ate whatever i wanted, did ab exercises, ran on a treadmill, etc. again, my baby was born perfectly, exquisitely healthy.

i quit smoking pot a month before i got pregnant (which i think actually allowed me to get pregnant, but that's another story). from all the studies done, the only thing that pot has ever been found to affect is the emotional development within developing brains. so basically that means any brain still developing can be permanently altered in its emotional capacity (empathy, etc.). this doesn't just mean babies, this means young kids & teenagers, too, & even young adults (early 20s). in fully developed bodies (& brains), exposure to cannabis has absolutely no permanent effects. it also doesn't cause genetic mutations, contrary to popular opinion. in mature women, there are obscure studies which suggest that regular exposure can cause a temporary suspension of ovulation. but overall, the risks associated with pot are minimal. i've heard lots of horror stories, but the research will turn up very little evidence to support them.

yes, you've got a bit of a risk in play right now, but the worst thing you can do is worry! if any damage has been done (which seems unlikely), then there is nothing you can do. if there's no damage, then the worry is pointless & will only cause you stress, which is the last thing you need. i think the risk of stress outweighs the risk of damage done by the pot. just keep yourself clean & take care of the 2 of you. your world has just gotten a whole lot bigger & a whole lot smaller all at the same time. eat protein, drink water, get plenty of rest, & prepare to be mommy to a beautiful new baby! & don't stress!!! ;-)

well they say that the first 3 months of ur pregnancy is the most dangerous, because everything about ur lil bubba is being created so if you've been smokin and stuff your baby could have already got some serious defects and if you havent seen a doc then you may have to look after a baby with a disability?? which i hope not...i hope your baby is healthy.

I don't want to sound like I am condoning drug use in any waybut here are some stats to check out from my personal experience: My mother quit doing everything "bad" when she was pregnant with my older sister. She even abided by the recommended pregnancy diet and routines and my sister is now an alcoholic, drug using child abuser on her 3rd husband. She never graduated high school mostly on account of her having 3 kids before she turned 20, her 4th was born a few years later. Now, while my mom was pregnant with me she continued her natural lifestyle including smoking cigarettes, marijuana and drinking occasionally. I managed to graduate with honors, had a full-time career until I married my husband and had my son with whom I spend every waking moment with thanks to the ability to be a stay at home mom. I have never done any drugs, i smoked cigarettes for 2 years (I quit the day I found out I was pregnant at 2 weeks) and the only night I drink is Friday with my bowling team. Now you tell me what marijuana does to babies.

Honestly, you won't be able to tell until you go and see the doctor just make sure that you tell them that you were participating in those activities before you knew you were preggo. That way they will test for what they can, but unfortunately what is done is done, but you may have caught a break since you stopped once you knew!

i was about 8 weeks before i found out that i was pregnant and i was doing the same... smoking ciggs, pot, and popping the occasional pill or 2. As soon as i found out i stopped taking pills, and started to wein myself off of the other stuff. By 5 months i wasn't smoking pot anymore and rarely smoked a cigg. I don't feel that you will have damage to ur baby.. i have friends that have admitted to doing hard drugs way into their 2nd trimesters.... like they say.. don't stress too much for that can be the worst thing of all. Good luck!!

I would still be worried, but here is an encouraging story...... I was smoking meth & weed & eating extasy the 1st 6 weeks of my first pregnancy. I didn't know I was pregnant.. I, too stopped as soon as I found out. I was super paranoid that my baby would be damaged & I was too afraid to tell the doctors. She turned out perfectly fine..:-) I guess you never know though. ♥

When I found out I was pregnant with my first baby, I was 12 weeks along. Got pregnant on the shot!! I had just gotten nine hours of ink done to my stomach the day before I found out. i was also a regular pothead, smoking more than 3 times a day and smoked about a pack of butts a day. I also experimented with pills, drinking and other drugs. I stopped completely, like you, and my son is just fine. He was a healthy 7 lbs and 21 inches long. No allergies, asthma or mental disabilities. I wouldn't worry about it, but about the medicaid...In my state, NH, I was able to see the doctor while I was awaiting my insurance to be approved. Most states will cover up to 90 days prior to the date the insurance is activated. I would check up on that, so you can get some much needed attention from your doc!! Keep up with your viatamins, eat healthy, drink plenty of fluids and YOU WILL BE FINE!! No stress babe!!!!

I know children that both have and havent been effected by this so I would say that you should count yourself lucky if there is nothing wrong, some times things aren't picked up until they are adolecents or even adults, just remember to take prenatal vitamins so your baby has everything s/he needs and to try to take care of your self. It is wrong that they have made you wait so long to be able to see a doc, but I hope everything turns out ok for you.

With my first before I found out I was pregnant, I was drinking just about every day smoking and taking a bunch of painkillers and Zanax. In fact he night before I found out we had a huge party. I was 8 weeks pregnant and didn't have a clue. I stopped everything the next day when we found out. I had extreme guilt about it but my pregnancy couldn't have been more perfect my delivery was smooth and he was born at 37 weeks weighing 6 lbs 9 oz and was a very healthy baby. I think as long as you quit and take care of yourself the remainder of your pregnancy you and your baby should be fine.

dont worry your baby is more than likely just fine. i smoked marijuana prior to getting pregnant with my first son and quit as soon as i found out about him - when he was 9 months old i had a few weeks of party time - i started smoking weed again and taking some pills and then found out i was pregnant again, i think i was about 2 months along when i found out - my baby is due in 26 days and is totally fine. if u did in fact quit when u found out i think it was early enough where there wont be any damage. dont stress, its bad for the baby! =)

If you smoked pot before you realized you were pregnant, don't panic. The chance that your baby has been affected is very small. Still, it's important to be honest with your practitioner about your previous use of pot and other recreational drugs. She may want to run some extra tests to be sure your baby is developing normally.

I have friend whom say there babys are smarter bc of the use of marijuana while pregnant. They developed at a high rate then the babys around them, that could have aslo been bc the other mothers used other drugs while pregnant also... but i am no doctor so i dont know for sure.

My mother smoked and did drugs while she was pregnant, and here i am just fine and dandy other then the anger problems. All three of us have anger problems then again so do my parents. We also have ADD, Dislexia, and a few other mild learning disablitys. Doctors say it was caused by the drug use. (including our anger problem) The only think i think her drug habbit did was lead my brothers down the same path... which they are both drug users and living at home at the age of 19 and 21. But other then that we are healthy and have no medical problems that were not inherited.

There are the rear cases where the drugs do affect the embro/ fetus, i think it all depends on how often and/ or how much of the drug was used.
My babys dad was a total cocaine head and doctors say that can affect the baby also. My son lucked out, well he has eye problems and i think he my be dislexic also but that kinda stuff is also inherited.

Best bet is to tell you doctor the truth so they know what to look for.
Best of luck, and if your a believer pray it helps a lot.

When I was pregnant with my son 10 years ago I was doin cocaine, drinking, smoking pot and cigs ... all before I found out I was preggers. Once I found out I quit but that was nearly 3 mos into the pregnancy. He not only came out perfect but has a genius level IQ as well and is always the top of his class. Don't brow beat yourself about it ... after all, you DID stop when you found out so it's not like you were knowingly endangering the baby. You just made some bad choices. Good luck!

I found out I was pregnant on New Years Day and the night before I was drinking heavily, it was New Year's Eve after all :0) I am an occassionally smoker, but I stopped all that as soon as I found out. I was already a month along I came to find out but right now the baby is perfectly normal. Dr.'s and my WIC tried to scare the crap out of me and tell me I already screwed my kid up and gave me a list of all the things that could happen to your kid by just being one month pregnant. Things could have happened but keep your head up, the statistics of your baby being normal since you stopped are higher then if you hadn't.

It really is a matter of luck at this point. I know some people that had done ridiculous amounts of drugs (much harder than smoking) their ENTIRE pregnancy and they have normal functioning preteens. But then I know some who have NEVER done anything and they have children with disabilities. You stopped so soon that I highly doubt your smoking will have many effects. Just keep to prenatal vitamins, eating well, and drinking lots of water to make up for it.
