When can I color my Hair?

I have heard a variety of different information from different people on coloring your hair while pregnant. Majority of them say to wait until the 3rd trimester. I usually professionally highlight my hair, but due to my budget and preparing for my baby girl to arrive, I was looking into at home hair color. My hairstylist said to wait until 3rd trimester because the chemicals will not affect the baby anymore. Does anyone else have any input on this? I really need to brighten my hair back up before my baby shower and if all else fails I suppose I will be going to spend the money to have it professionally highlighted since the chemicals do not touch my scalp, but I would like to save as much money as I could by doing it at home.

I am a hairstylist and i have never heard of the chemicals from hair dye hurting that baby in any way. As far as i know coloring your hair while pregnant is fine. The only thing that i would be aware of if i was you is that you may not get the color you are wanting. Because you body is changing so much and your homones are crazy while pregnant it is not guaranteed that you will get the color you are looking for. I would suggest not using a high lift product thou such as bleach simply because of the smell and what not. I have colored my hair while pregnant the first time (as i was in hair school at the time and i was never told not to do it) however it was interesting to see what color it would actually turn, it was never quite what we expected, but thats just me.
Good luck

the hair dye does not do anything to the baby...they tell u not to use anything with ammonia in it but that even goes for cleaning stuff. they also say cuz og the changes in hormones that the dye may not come out right, but nothing in it will harm the baby. i always color my hair, i've done it 2 or 3 times this pregnancy alone...

highlights are fine at any time in your pregnancy...at home or in the salon bc it doesn't touch the root so it's fine. The at home highlight kits have a really strong odor to them though that the salons have moved away from...you should avoid ammonia and bleach in your first trimester bc the fumes are too great. I would professionally highlight for the time you are pregnant - you can always switch to the home color after the baby arrives to save money. It's the all-over hair color they tell you not to get in your first trimester. Either way, if you go to an aveda salon, they use all natural processes so even the all-over color is ok...
