its not that you cant...i do all the time....its just that if you sleep on your left the blood cerculation is better and is thought to be better for placenta and baby.
i always sleep on the right. and with my last pregnancy i went 11 days over and my baby was 8lb 5oz so i really wouldnt worry :)

It is said that blood circulation and nutrients flow better through the placenta to your baby when you sleep on your left side. However it's not always easy to sleep on either side for some woman. I used to feel like I needed to vomit when I slept on my right side during my early wks of pregnancy. Now at 26wks pregnant I find it more relieving by sleeping on my back with a few pillows to prop me up so I'm not flat.

it has something to do with your aorta it extends down to your hips where it branches off into your femorals. something about the way the organs are laid out when you lay on your right has the potential to slightly constrict bloodflow i can't sleep on my left, just so uncomfortable

I have not heard that you shouldn't sleep on your right side, only that the left side is suggested.
I personally find myself sleeping on my right side much more than my left. That's what is most comfortable for me. Although I do flip throughout the night from right to left, and back again.

it doesnt matter which side you sleep on its best to sleep on your left side but the right is fine its not as good to sleep on your back but on occasion i have woke up on my back although it makes my muscles around my uterus hurt and its kinda hard to breathe
