Baby, it's cold outside.....Ideas to keep your kids entertained in these cold winter months.

I have two boys, 4 and 2, and we keep busy, busy, busy! We're almost always out for walks and to the parks, but that comes to a sudden hault when the cold temperatures hit. We live in Alberta, Canada and it gets mighty cold up here! When it's nice(r) out (not below -10C), we head outside for some sledding and snow play, but when it is really cold out, there's not a chance we are going anywhere.

It can become quite the challenge to keep the boys entertained while couped up inside for days on end. We try to do a lot of baking and crafts, but that only holds their attention for so long. Sometimes we build forts and play inside of them for hours on end. There are days that I luck out and they will entertain themselves with toys and games. I will admit that there are even days that we cuddle up on the couch or a mound of blankets on the floor and watch movies all day. But then there are the days that they whine and cry all day because they are bored and, of course, this leads to the fighting and antagonizing one another. I can't be physically at their sides every minute of the day to entertain them. Does anyone have any ideas of how to limit the fighting and keep their attention on an activity without me needing to be there the whole time??

I live in Maine so I know what you are talking about when you say cold! I have a 7, 2, and 1 yr old.. All girls. When it is way too cold to go outside I find myself having the same problems.. Some days I do better than others and find fun things to do and others we just snuggle and watch movies. But we do alot of crafts. I go online and just search their age groups and what is out there for crafts. Popsicle sticks with glue.. Add some glitter and you are golden! We also do alot of baking.. My kiddos love baking cookies and decorating them! And lets just say that fresh baked warm cookies are even better on a cold day! And I always have alot of cleaning to do so I just turn up the music real loud and dance and sing while I clean and the kiddos love it! And the indoor fort idea is great!

Hey Britney! I know what you mean about cold, not as cold as what you are saying but this past week we have had -20 plus wind chill. My 3 girls love to be outside and after a couple cold days are ready to clomb the walls. We pack up and head to our Wellness centre for some swimming and gym time. Anywhere that is indoors they can run around and scream, play we head there.

We have done all the crafts, baking and indoor stuff befoire and they love it, but it isn't the same as getting outside. Another thing I have done was bring the snow inside and they make mini snowmen at the table and turn the snow different colours, they just love it.

Here's hoping we will have some more warmer days and a short winter..............

Thanks for all of your ideas everyone! I did want to throw out there that when I say cold, I mean COLD. Sometimes -40C to -50C. Buses don't run, vehicles won't start, frost bite in 30 seconds kind of cold. On those days there is literally no leaving the house and these are the days that I stress over.
I will definitely be saving some big boxes for the boys! Perhaps a few so they don't have to fight over them (who am I kidding...lol).
Thanks again for all the feedback!!

We try to take them somewhere. We have a bounce house that is open during school vacations. Also, in our mall, they have a play structure. Even if it is to get them out of the house for a couple of hours...Good luck!

they need to be outside a couple of times a day for fresh air...and then playing store could be fun if two or older they should love it...save lots of empty boxes and containers with labels...a rainy day box comes in handy full of junk mail, labels, stuff for crafts...board games...

i have a 4 and 2 yr old boys too. i just got the cat in the hat game and they absolutly LOVE it!!!! they want to play over and over. of course we adjust the rules so my 2 yr old can do everything and everyone wins but youll see what i mean. i also noticed there are other games like it. they are fun for you too without the hassle of following the rules like most board games. you didnt put that you dance and excercise. we put on fat boy slim videos from utube and they will watch them as long as i let them ( watch them yourself first to make sure you approve.) i have only found three i really like and that they will dance to. i started excercising to them and then that turned into something we all do now. once you get them in the hang of doing it they can do all of this by themselves!! as far as the fighting goes. i tell my 4 yr old to not let his little brother beat up on him and i tell my 2 yr old hes going to bed if i hear anything other than love come out of wherever they are playing. that is going to have to be on you though bc only you know what will work for them. hope i helped a little!! good luck :)

thats a tricky one! sounds like you are doing the best job already. ! also have two boys, 5 and 2, and Im always on the go! We live in Australia so I have never experienced days like that, can you leave the house if you wanted too? when we have rainy weather and the boys get cabin fever we head down to the local BUNNINGS WAREHOUSE which has an indoor play ground and I let them go wild for a while. then we get the Kids sized shopping carts and we cruise the isles for things we need! I manage to always find something I need! this takes up a good few hours and by the time we are home I can usually get both to have a nap:) Just one idea that helps me but like I said I have no idea what the weather is like! Iv never seen snow!!!! ALL MY BEST WISHES and good luck x
