Reception here in UK is something they consider as first step in school.Actually in reception they teach alphabet and their sounds, numbers to begin till 20 and by the end of the year they are upto 50.I would say it is bit like pre school /nursery.Mostly in this reception they try to achieve kids like socialising, team work and hand & eye coordination like using scissors.

I tried to do IQ test privately, but then my research in UK they don't really recommend at this age.I have a PT meeting at the end of this month.Looking forward to hear from his teacher on her opinion.

When I found like he is more talented I started talking to him about sun, moon, star and big bang theory.I also did teach him to add before he started school. With respect to reading and writing I did start with small sentences and I made sure he says each word clearly so that he can make out the letters.

Hi, your son is doing what second graders do here in the states! That is awesome. Ever thought of having his IQ tested? Most schools here will do it if requested. He is way beyond 5 year old level. My son can read basic words, but he's not yet writing all of them out. Do you work with him at home? Any pointers on teaching my son to read/write words longer than cat?;) What do you mean your son is in Reception?

Wow, your son sounds very intelligent! My sons birthday is 2/27/07 as well. My son was in pre-school for a few months but I had to take him out; I wasnt happy with teacher. My son can add 1+1, 2+2 and were working on the rest. He has no interest in "Letter Recognition"...Only the letters in his name or my name, etc. What do you mean your son can do sentences, like write them out? My son speaks very well and he's very literal and a great colorer.
