I was wondering if anybody had started potty-training yet. I was thinking of starting after Lara's birthday because she's showing a lot of signs that she's ready. But I'm always second guessing myself...

pull-ups are quite expensive now. why don't u try and get her on the potty every 2 hours. girls are really easier especially when they see u go, my little girl is going to be 2 in feb she is fully potty trained and wears dora underwears and she loves it. i leave the toilet door open and the potty too. so she knows when to go.

I am with you, I have a new baby on the way in March and am not looking forward to having two kids in diapers. Owen is showing signs that he is ready, but I'm just not sure either.

I was thinkin of startin as he is 2 in 5 weeks and im due a baby girl in 6 weeks lol oh the joy!! i also want to get him into his bed but he dosent want too shal i just wait until he is older and he understands better or just take his cot away and tell him he has to use his bed now? Help

I feel you! I also wanted to make both of these transitions before my baby boy comes in April. Luckily , I had no problem with moving into a toddler bed ( see another conversation for my post about this) and we are working on potty training. She is almost there but still poops in her diaper and occasionaly wakes up wet in the morning. I wouldn't push it, however. If your son isn't ready he just isn't ready no matter how ready you are :). I also don't think it would be a good idea to do either right after the baby is born. It will be a huge event so let it happen and once you start feeling like everything is back to normal, or as close as it will get, then go ahead and try.

I have been "playing" with potty training since around 18 months. When my daughter was that young I would just put her on randomly, not expecting anything, and sometimes she would surprise me and go, sometimes not. Since December we have been putting her on the toilet regularly. She sits on a Dora potty that goes on top of the big potty (no little potty chair to clean out!).

Just within the last 2 weeks she has been staying dry all day long and we have her go potty every 2-3 hours. She contines to poop in her diaper however and sometimes wakes up in the morning with a wet diaper. Sometimes she will tell us she has to go potty but usually we have to bring it up by saying something like "amrah, lets go try to go potty" and she'll come right in and usually go. We clap for her and tell her what a big girl she is but don't give her any other sort of rewards.

If you try and she doesn't seem ready at all, don't make a big deal out of it. Just keep trying periodically until she shows some kind of interest then just go with it but don't push it. I have faith that kids do things as they are ready and it doesn't usually work if you try to make them do something before they are ready.

Quoting Cynthia:

I haven't started yet, but we did go out and buy a potty to put in the bathroom. At about 18 months, my little one felt she should run around stark nakked, and some friends suggested to buy the potty so everytime she did this, put her on it. Right now, she likes to sit on it (in her diaper) and she likes to use tp... which is so cute!  Hopefully, comein year 2 we can work on actually potty training her, but i'm not overly worried.

Yeah, we decided to buy a little potty and started pre-potty training.  She justs sits on it fully clothed when she wants to, and we're talking to her a lot when we change her diaper about 'wet' and 'dry', etc.  I don't think she's totally ready yet for full-blown potty-training.

My son Mason initiated potty training last Wednesday. He is now going every time in the potty even with a pull up on. I am still amazed how easy and quickly his training has been. My daughter who will be 6 in March was not as easy when she was little. I am a true believer in waiting until your child is ready and of course mommy instincts. Good Luck!!

I used a "boot camp" method with my daughter about a 1 1/2 ago and it has been 5 days since we have had a waking accident. She tells me anytime she needs to go potty & even used a "big" potty without a seat when we were out running errands the other day. She went 6 days in a row without a sleeping accident, then this morning woke up at 5 and was wet.

I would say to start introducing the potty very early and don't give yourself any back up plans. When I decided to start PT I got all the diapers out of the house and never even bought and pull ups. We started with traingin panties and the first day was admittedly bad. She had several accidents before she got the hang of it. But she is doing so good now I have people saying they are going to bring their kids to me when it's time to potty train!!

Just remember it takes LOTS of patience!!!!

We have. He's going to be 2 in two weeks and we've been introducing the potty to him and teaching him some sign language. He's getting to the point that he hates having a wet or dirty diaper. He hasn't actually went in the potty yet, but I'm sure it will happen soon. Good Luck! Make it fun for her.

We have one that has a motion detector and when they go it go tada. but my mom ended up buying a little bob the builder seat that goes right on top of the regular toilet and he loves it!! we also make sure to make a big deal!! Hes gone only 2 times but when he went he claps and goes yeeaahh!! we also reward him with something that he likes when he does do something in the big boy potty!! Usally though they will let you know when they are ready!! Good luck!!!

We started with potty training when my daughter was about 18 mths.  It was actually her that started it.  One day she started telling me she had to go potty, and we didnt even have her a potty yet.  I thought she was copying a friends kid, but sure enough she went and hid behind the couch and did #2.  So I went straight to the store and got her a potty.  At first I would ask her if she had to go when she would wake up and set her down and she would go.  Then she got to where she would tell me when she had to go.  Now she usually always says when she has to go, except with #2  she will use the potty for it, but sometimes she would rather hide and do it.  I try to watch for it and take her to the potty and explain to her that she needs to do it there.  Good luck!

My daughter is almost potty trained! She started showing signs at 12 months and we have taken it very slow up until about 3 weeks ago. She is now only having about 2 accidents a day. When she is at home she gets a "treat" for going potty. I give her a hershey's kiss. Once she got a potty chair and pantys she was more excited and more aware. One piece of advice is once you go to underwear don't go back to diapers. We are still struggling with this a little and try to only put on diapers at naptime and bedtime. Hope this helps

My own daughter (now 10) started potty training at 18 months. She started showing signs of readiness like going through the night without peeing. By 2 she was pretty much fully "trained"

We lived in a house with wood floors so I let her run around naked a lot and didn't mind cleaning up pee and a little poo once in a while. i had her Baby Bjorn potty in the living room near her toys.

My feb. 07 boy is still getting the hang of it. He's not as eager to use the potty but I've done the same with him except we now live in a home with carpet so he doesn't get as much naked time.

I have heard that girls learn earlier and faster, so go for it! she's probably very ready!

Hi Valerie - I tried for 4 weeks from early December with Emily - she was showing lots the signs liked sitting on the toilet and being a big girl but was getting frustrated as she NEVER ended up going on the toilet Ieven when she sat there for ages. So I've put it on hold but I leave her nappy off for several hours every day we are at home together and waiting till she's a bit more aware. I think disposable nappies leave them so dry they've no idea they've done a wee. One thing I did that helped with her getting used to the toilet was I made a collage of photos of little kids sitting on the toilet (it's incredible how many pics I was abe to find on google images!) she still likes to look at the pics and talk about the kids

My son has been going to the potty for about 6 months that is if we are at home he won't let you know if he needs to go when we are away from home. He will say pee or poop if we are at home and he doesn't have a diaper on, so if you can let her run around without one and leave her potty out and maybe she'll go own her own, but she might be like my son he won't use the potty chair we bought he wanted to use the regular toliet. Good Luck and if it doesn't work u can always try again later

I started Trinity fairly early as an introduction at around 18 months. She is now asking to got to the bathroom. She is pretty good with recognizing the sensation and hates to keep the pamper on too long! I say introduce it and make sure you have plenty of snacks and toys around the potty for the "big moment"! Best Wishes...
