My daughter's birthday is Dec. 31st too.....I can tell you from experience that it is a bad day to try to plan a party with friends until she is a teenager.... However.... family usually come through at maybe a noon party (or even 1ish). The dollar store is perfect for paper products and metallic balloons. Choose a toy or book that your child is fond of and you will get better pictures when she smiles. Build your party around whatever makes her smile..... At this age you can have a family only party...or add a friend or two.... when someone asks what they can do .... be ready... and say a 2 liter drink.....bag of ______ cookies, etc. It really doesn't need to be elaborate at this age.... and when it is party time... go with the flow.... if everyone is nibbling and enjoying watching your daughter .... linger there and enjoy yourself. Open presents and let your child have a few minutes with the toy before you move on... have someone write things down OR you can have a pen handy and write the giver's name on the package (for thank you notes). I could give you many more suggestions but I think you will find if you start with your child and just build on that it will be great fun!!! Beth Foushee

We're having a mickey themed b/d party. not sure what to get him yet, maybe some clothes, but he doesn't need any, he has tons with 2 older brothers. and too many toys too. but the cake is mickey themed, and i think we're doing shish kabobs for dinner, they were a hit 2 years ago at my other sons first b/d.

The birthday has passed but for any other mother with a child coming into their 1st to 10th birthday, I have a great idea because it really worked on my small kids. My nephew was there and he was only 10mths so I think this applies too.



Kids love animation and I bought this birthday card called DP and his friends from Walgreens. This card character on the card actually comes to life and sings "Happy birthday on your TV". You actually get a card and a DVD so for under five bucks you get the birthday card and gift.



If you get one, make sure you play it while cutting the cake as all the kids will join in - its a great sing along and so cute for small kids. I know it is available in SW Florida from Walgreens. I am excited for my daughter's first birthday also, which is Feb 10th. I am also very sad bout it. lol. I have a litlle boy too and before he turned 1, I had my daughter! So I am sad I dont have my little tiny baby anymore, but its fun at the same time!



We are also doing a Princess themed party. i even bought her a little tiara. We are having one party at our place with both sides of the family. Its easier that way. Also, I found an adorable castle cake. I am super excited to see her dig in :)

Hello all just figured out that at Wal-mart they have everything for 1 year old birthday parties..

Only gonna cost about $20.00!!!  Yeah its generic but on tight budgets it works,we are also going to go to his favorite resturant at this point and invite both sides if they come or not thats a different story.I just know he will have fun,and I can't wait to see him dive into his cake,I ordered it today yeah I know its a little early but I am getting excited now..lol

any way with his big cake ordered they(the bakery) give me a little just for him to get into so thats great!!! Just wanted to share since I finally got everything together now..lol

My daughter turns one on Feb 20, we are having her party on Sat the 21st. We decided on renting a pavilion and having her party at the park. The party will have a princess theme. As for food, it will be hamburgers and hotdogs, drinks, and of course cake.

MY son turns 1 on Feb 3. On his birthday we're going to the zoo, then having a party the following saturday. But it'll be pretty low-key. The only family in-town is my sister so she'll be here, and we'll have some friends and a couple kids. I'm basically planning on having cake and ice-cream (D will get his own little cupcake) and that's about it-- no games or real theme. I figure he won't remember it, and I'll be happy just getting a few shots of him with cake all over his face. ; )

My son's birthday is Feb 13th which lands of a Friday.  That friday I am taking him to build-a-bear so we can design his very own birthday bear which maybe someday he can give to his own child.  Then we are taking him to a paint-your-own-pottery store where we can put his hand and foot prints on different ceramic items.  We are throwing a small birthday party for him the 15th so that family and friends will still have Valentine's Day to themselves.  Im not having a theme or doing anything fancy.  I just had surgery myself and would rather not have to stress out about throwning a fancy 1 year old birthday party.  Besides, I would rather save the money and put it towards something he will really like, a jungle gym for the backyard!

We have decided on a butterfly theme for Evelyn (2/12/08). We're actually celebrating her birthday on the 14th, so I'm planning on including heart shaped cookies as well. She has a favorite dolly that she is always carrying around, and the doll has a butterfly on her dress. I'm going to attempt my best Martha Stewart & make the cake from scratch. We'll be celebrating mostly with family and a few close friends. It is amazing how quickly a year can fly by!

Hi Jennifer! What a coincidence, we're doing the Princess-themed 1st birthday for our daughter Elise next month as well! In our family, the 1st birthday is traditionally a huge deal - all relatives are invited, as well as friends. We have over 40 attending as of today. I just purchased the 1st Bday Princess theme decorations, plates, etc. at BirthdayDirect.com - if you're in the market for these items. I found this website to have the cheapest prices (and I shopped around for quite awhile). I also found a soft Princess crown and wand at 1stWishes.com. Every Princess needs her crown and wand! I also purchased a 1st birthday dress and will be taking her prior to the party to have her one-year pics taken. My daughter's nursery is done in Ladybugs. So we are combining Valentine's Day and ladybugs and having a "Lovebug" themed party. I scrapbooked all her invitations on red paper with black polka dots. I'm using all reds and pinks mostly. I found Valentine's day supplies and Garden Party supplies at Party City and found other things at Michaels and Hobby Lobby.



I'm making red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing and white cupcakes with strawberry icing. We are having heart cookies, candied strawberries, chicken salad sandwiches cut into hearts with heart shaped cookie cutters. I got lady bug candy mints and chocolate hearts too. I found heart shaped confetti in pinks and reds. All the platters and serving dishes are in pinks and reds. I even found long legged lady bugs that hang on the bowls and serving dishes upside down, side ways, etc. Really cute stuff!!



And, of course, her party dress is a smocked red gingham print dress. We are having it at a local park unless it rains then it will be at home. I live in the south so we don't really have extremely cold temperatures. Chances are the temperature will be fine.....I'm praying so anyway!



I kinda went a little crazy, but she is my only daughter and my last baby and she will only turn 1 once!

My son turns one on the 2nd of feb and because I work in childcare and he attends my centre and I'm the GL of the nursery we are having a BIG celebration at "school".

He will be celebrating it with all his friends at school and another boy is 1 on the 1st of feb so it will be for the both of them.

We will have lots of balloons with helium covering the roof, with a tent and tunnels and all the fun toys at "school", cupcakes and biscuits with icing for afternoon tea and a big fun filled day all round.

There's not really a theme just lots of fun time spent with his school mates

We will also be having a small family get together on the following saturday.

My daughter's birthday is also on the 15th---mine is the 13th! So we have quite a busy weekend. I'm doing her party on Valentine's afternoon. We're celebrating my birthday by volunteering at our local Ronald McDonald House and serving dinner there because we stayed there after Rachel was born. She was not born early, but at four days old, she had to go to the NICU because of a high biliruben. We are so blessed, and like many of you, want her party to be a celebration of life! Over the past several years, there has been a lot of death in my husband's family, and Rachel has brought everyone closer together and truly shown us what LIFE is in so many ways.



There will be mainly family at her party.

One way to save money on a tight budget is to buy plates and decorations at the Dollar Tree or your local dollar store. Also, make your own invitations and cake. Keep it simple. As far as a theme, chose certain colors and coordinate different types of toys in with the colors.

I'm doing a butterfly themed party w/mainly just family & a few close friends.  I wanted to keep it small, but it's up to 20+ which to me seems huge for a 1 year old, but we'll see how it goes.  I found really great cake recipes for butterfly shaped cakes @ Betty Crocker. com & although I'm anxious to get started, I don't want to forget why we're celebrating the day.  Taylyr was born @ 35 weeks & it was scary for awhile but now she's a healthy, happy, & beautiful little baby girl & I want to focus on how thankful I am to have her in my life! 2-6-08.

Thats definitely true about the cake, Amber....they do that in my area too..which is nice! I dont know if my daiughter will actually smash it or be afraid...I havent tested the waters with too many sweets because of diabetes....So we'll see...:) Walmart has great prices on invitations! I had to get another pack of them (just a couple people that I forgot to add to the list and the pack only had 20 in it...) and they had a pack of 8 for $1.97!! It was great! I havent started looking at other decoraitons but I should start. I was waiting for her initial themed stuff to arrive and it finally did! Let the games begin!!

First Wishes.com has a great cake topper for the Princess theme-- you can get a wand and a tiara both for $4.99!! Great price and they look pretty too!

We are also doing a princess theme as well on 2-8-08. We are going to do a pizza party at our house and we are also inviting people who have been so good to our daughter this first year. I actually found some cute stuff at Walmart. I also got her a very cute 1st birthday outfit at Babys r us for a really good price (only about $16). I know that at most places when you order a cake, if you tell them that it is for a 1st birthday, they will give you a small individual cake for the birthday girl to dig into herself. Then you don't have to worry about messy fingers in everyone else's cake. :)

We are having a monkey themed party for our daughter on Feb. 28th (she's a Leap Year girl, but obviously can't celebrate on that day). The colors will be pink and brown (our wedding colors, too). It's a small party. We're inviting both sets of grandparents, our siblings and their children. Maybe 20/25 tops. We're going to have her first BIG party on her 4th birthday because it will be first actual birthday. We're also just serving cupcakes and ice cream. Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting and I will frost the face of a monkey on all the cupcakes.

I also ordered her a beautiful shirt online. It's a long-sleeved white T with an embroidered cupcake with 1 candle and across the top her name is embroidered as well. I wanted to dress her up but I figured she gets in everything and tights really aren't her thing! She'll wear that with jeans (or cute pink pants) and her little Uggs. I figured very casual and comfy for our chilly February birthday!

We are doing a Rubber Ducky theme for our daughter who will be 1 on Feb 26th.  It is her fav toy.  She walks around with it everywhere and loves to play with it in the tub too.  I am going to hopefully have a duck shaped cake and I found some b-day candles that are in the shape of ducks!  I am so excited and cannot believe how fast a year has gone!

We decided to rent a room at the park district and do one bigger party. The stress level has gone down considerably! Although we will have to bring a ton of stuff to the room, I think it will be a bit easier and everyone will fit!

We're doing a ladybug theme in pink and brown. I found a cake pan at Michael's and that's about all I have planned so far.

We're going to have a ton of people, too (not 165, though) - a handful of one and two year olds, some older kids, and a bunchof adults. I was hoping to do 2 parties, but I don't think I have the stamina, so instead, I think we'll do a houseful of people.

We have a mini ball pit in our living room downstairs (found the balls cheap at Superstore and put them in a box) and I'll do a pin the tail on the donkey (or something to go with the theme if I have time). I figure the men will be upstairs watching TV.

We're doing it in the afternoon, so no meals, but lots of snacks - every one's eating solids except for one breastfeeder, so we're good there. We may do a meal ata a restaurant with the close family after.

If you want keepsakes, I saw a great photo frame with a huge mat for signatures. I'm a quilter so I might place out quilt squares, but I did that at the shower. I've also been trying to get a photo of my little girl with each of her relatives and then we put the picture up in her room on the wall. You could do the same thing with handprints (would work really well as a thank you to the guests). I love the idea of putting up photos for decoration.

Hope some of this helps some of you.

Any ideas for snacks? I'd like healthy but easy to prepare.

Do you have to do two parties? It sounds as if you are making it too hard on yourself. I take it there are two sides of the family. Can you go out to a restaurant with one family and then have one small party for any small children? Don't stress yourself out over this--it should be a time for you to enjoy...ENJOY...and celebrate that your child is one year old, but also to celebrate LIFE!

My sister and I had our baby girls one day apart so we're combining our parties. The guest list is now at 165, and we'll have it at my house. We're going to have various areas: upstairs for the adults, the garage will have a TV with ballgames (for the daddies) and drinks, downstairs we'll set up the Wii for older kids, and I'll have activity tables with coloring books and games for younger kids. I'll also have one bedroom with the baby toys for the very little ones. We won't have a theme, we'll just do pink and brown decorations, like we had at our baby showers. We'll socialize, eat, have cake and open presents. Hopefully it will go smoothly!

Jennifer...if you have a Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or some other hobby store similar in your area, check out their cupcake stands...or you could do what Wal-Mart does and make a shape out of the cupcakes placed close together.  I would really check anyplace that has cake decorating supplies!

Ugh, I am not looking forward to the parties. Yes, it seems we will have 2 and even then, we can't invite everyone we probably would like to since we have a small house (and alot of family). I fear it will be a zoo and not enjoyable at all. Thought of having the family party at one of the grandma's houses, but then the other one would be hurt. I love the ideas! They are all so adorable! Adelynne turns 1 on February 8, but because of the weather and what not, we're having the party on the 21st!! Shannon, Where did u find cupcake stands? I'm trying to find a stand that will make a bunch of cupcakes look like a cake..? Or maybe someone else can answer that too...I heard of AC Moore having them, but any other places that you know of?

I'd love for ours to be bigger, but it will probably be mostly family with one other "little" friend of my daughter's. I'm just coordinating an animal train party because that's her favorite toy (Mom's too). I got a train muffin pan for Christmas and I'm going to bake the cake in that and place the train on top of a large choc. cookie base. I can't decide if her cake will be one of the cars or a mini bear from a pan I have. I have animal plates and plan to serve baby-friendly snacks that everyone can enjoy. I just wish that my mom and stepmom could come...they both have had or will be having surgery and live about 4 hours from us.



But I am SO excited...I love planning parties and have been thinking of ideas for a while.

Im gettin excited about my daughters first birthday aswell. Im doing a princess theme too. I am also going to include pictures from when she was first born to show people ow much she has grown and how fast the first year has gone.

My idea to you is as yor doing a party for your lilttle girl and thanking every for the love and support you have had over the last year whislt your daughter has been growing  up, is to make thankyou card's and put a picture of your daughter on the front to show people how much love they have given your daughter. Also do a slide show of friends and family who have been there over the past year to show how much they are loved.

For decorations you could get princess banner but with your daughters name on there and the year she was born and then under neath banner is to put a picture of her aswell. I got through the post a little leaflet on partys for first birthdays and has lost of idea's aswell. there is a website address too that i can give you if you want any more ideas .
