Hi,

Since we all have 15month old babies here, just thought would be a good idea to see how many are still breastfeeding? As my son doesnt drink from bottle/sippy cup much and becos of health advantages I am breastfeeding my toddler.

I breastfeed my son once : around 10am(not always), before naptime at 1pm,

evening around 5pm and night before he sleeps. Sometimes I manage to spoon feed him 3oz Enfamil .

I have started weaning him from morning and evening feed, but will really enforce this from next week as I will be staying at my mother's home for a month. With her help I intend to reduce breasfeeding completely to just down to one feed per day(maybe nightime). I will be rejoining work once he is 18months.

I would like to hear your experience, weaning ideas or about your plans to wean if you are also breastfeeding.

Hey Eesha, nothing to worry abt, I hear that toddlers are very fussy eaters.. one day they wil eat and another they will just stay on one meal through the day (like my son does). I dont think weight is an issue as my son is hovering between 9-9.6kgs from 3 months.. I have read that weight wont increase too much in the second yr (~1-3kgs in total from 12 to 24months). Just make sure he is getting enough nutrients in whatever he chooses to eat.

My son who never used to take sippy cup now drinks a bit of water from it and also drinks little flavored milk using straw. I guess the summer season makes them more thirsty than hungry. Ssome days when he is not in a mood to eat, I give him watery cerelac.

My daughter still nurses about 4 times a day, and I plan to follow her lead and allow her to self wean when she is ready. I am fortunate that I have a part-time work schedule that allows me to breast feed her regularly. I believe strongly in the health and bonding benefits of breast feeding, and I know that this time is special to both of us, and helps her to soothe and reconnect with her inner center.

My daughter still nurses 4, sometimes more, times during a day. I enjoy that time with her so am not doing anything to actively reduce feedings. Some days she is more interested than others and that's fine with me, following her lead. My goal is 2 years. I have been back to work for a year now so hopefully nothing major will rock the boat at this point. My daughter doesn't like whole milk so we give her 2% - better than not drinking it and she loves water. I have found straw cups are her preferred over sippy so that might help.

Thanks Ladies..
I too will continue as long as possible. I dont mind feeding him morning and nights once I start working. But lets see how the milk supply is as I feel its reduced a lot now.

I still nurse my daughter twice a day... first thing in the morning and just before bed at night. She was nursing 4 times a day up until I had to go back to work when she 12 months old. To cut back, I did the same as what others have mentioned... by dropping one feed for a week and then dropping another one once my body had adjusted.

I plan on continuing until she is at least 2 years old :)

Our son still nurses at least four or five times in a 24 hour period. We aren't trying to wean him or cut out feedings at this point, as my goal was to go with the WHO recommended two year minimum of nursing. (That and I've really enjoyed nursing him and don't really want to have to stop any time soon!) Lately he has been cutting back of his own accord. I suppose all good things must come to an end eventually.

I was feeding my son just once before bed until the night he bit me---three times! I was reluctant to give it up, hence why I didn't stop after one bite. We found out at 1 year that he is lactose intolerant, and when we started giving him soy milk he loved it, so drinking isn't a problem. We just quit a couple of weeks ago, so he was just over 14 months.

Both of my kids were weaned at 14 months, by just dropping one feed a day for a week, then dropping another. The bedtime one was always the last to go because it was the time they seemed to nurse the best.

Quoting Marlene:

I had to cut back breastfeeding to once a day - first thing in the morning - when I went back to work when he was 12 months old. I did it by gradually cutting out one feed in the day for a few days at a time before cutting out the next feed. I recently had my appendix removed and was in hospital so that was the end of breastfeeding. I was in too much pain to be able to express and I couldn't breastfeed him while on all those funky medications for pain! My son does drink from a bottle but we had trouble finding a sippy cup that he would like for drinking water until I tried one with a straw which he loves. Good luck and go at it slowly so you're not in too much pain!

Thanks Marlene. I have reduced the feeds now so milk content has reduced. This way I dont get pain if i miss a feed. Yea, I too have given him the straw sippy cup now and he seems to atleast take 1-2sips this way.
