Well..my goober butt , is 18 months and she figured out how to crawl out of her crib at like 14 months >.< So with a huge big scary thud, and after my husband preforming CPR to restart my heart( im just kidding but my heart did skip a few beats cause it scared the crud out of me)

we figured the days of her in a crib were over.

we recently moved across country and during the trip with all the hotel stays we found she slept fine in the beds in the hotel. More so than the cribs.

Anywho, to see if she could handle being in her own bed we baby proofed her entire room and put her mattress on the floor ,so if she fell out ..it wouldn't be enough of a fall to be worried with.

She has done amazing, we just shut the door at night now..before we had a baby gate up. buuut im afraid were going to have to find those door nob things to make sure she doesn't open the door in the middle of the night lol cause shes figured that out quite quickly.

Anyways..kate has done great with it , since were expecting another one in november were going to completely out fit her room with new bed, new theme ect ect..for Christmas so shes not feeling left out. That's when she'll get her "official big girl bed".

we are expecting another in 2 weeks so to avoid buying another crib we bought her big girl bed. I am having a pretty hard time of it, she keeps wanting to stand on it and walk around like she did in her crib, i even took it off the frame and set the boxspring and mattress on the floor and got a toddler side rail. she doesnt want to go to sleep in unless mommy is laying down with her and when she does wake up she goes straight to her door and screams till i open it no matter what time of night it is.

My twins are both still in cribs and I plan to keep them there for as long as possible. I'm in no hurry for them to grow up and they are perfectly happy where they are!

We're doing that right now. I'm 29 weeks pregnant and would like to have Tre` out of our bed and room by the time Bella is born. He used to sleep in a crib that was right next to our bed. With the crib rail down it was level with our mattress so if he wanted he could crawl in our bed in the middle of the night. I started out by putting him in his toddler bed in the boys' room and he'd come in our room in the middle of the night and I'd put him in his crib. Last week I finally just took the crib down. Now he falls asleep in the living room with us like he always has, then I put him in his toddler bed and he sleeps there all night most nights. On the nights he comes in our room, I take him back and lay with him for a min or two until he falls back asleep. The boys' room is right across from ours in a little hall. I put a night light in our room, the boys' room, and the bathroom and a baby gate in the doorway that goes to the rest of the house. I keep the bathroom picked up, the cabinets and toilet locked, and everything up out of reach, but he doesn't ever bother anything in there. He's doing really good at this point and I don't think we'll have any problems :) I'd love to get bunk beds but I just don't trust the climbing 18 month old with a ladder to the top bunk :P So when he gets a little older we'll do bunk beds, I'm gonna have to get a set for the girls' room eventually too... sigh...lol!

My husband got our son a toddler bed last month and already set it up and put the crib away. Our son did great falling asleep in his crib and when we had him sleep in the bed, he did well. The second night, he got up but we told him it was night-night time and put him back in there. He stayed, and even after his nap he will get up when he is ready. It has been working out well. With our older daughter, we waited until she was almost 2 to get in a bed, but it was just timing, We were getting ready to move and didn't want to get more furniture until after the move. So I am saying it just depends on what you are willing to do. I bet she would have been fine too if we tried when she was younger. Kids are smart, so if you are there and consistent I think it will be fine.

My son is in a big boy bed now and he took right to it. He stays in bed all night without a problem. When he wakes up in the morning, he gets out of bed and plays with the toys we have in there until he gets bored and will start trying to wake me up.

Nap time is slightly different. After I lay him down, he gets up and plays a little more on his own, then crawls back into bed and takes his nap.

I got my son his on his 1st birthday, he did great. No issues at all with it. I have heard no bad stories from parents starting younger, but i have about them switching later like 20 months, though im sure there are somewhere lol. But we tried it and it worked out great.

i put my daughter in a low full size futon bed around 8months for safety reasons. i swear she is part monkey! she climbed out of everything!!! i never had a problem with her. when she wakes up im up already so we dont have problems. if she wakes up at night she will come wake me or her daddy up.

i keep everything off but a little night light by my door so she will go to the light by my door.

I moved my sun into a toddler bed when he turned one because we were given the bed and I did not want a crib and a bed up at the same time. I was a little worried but I put a up bed railings on the sides and we have had no problems. He could still move around but not fall out. We put a flat pillow at the head to get him too like staying at the top. Now at 18 months the bed railings are down and he does not even get out of bed until I go in to get him.

My daughter started using her crib at 3-4 months when she hit the 15 lb mark... When we moved though, she just turned 1 year and for some reason refused to sleep in her crib after that point. She slept downstairs on the couch. So when our son was born, May of this year, we converted her crib to a daybed and she's been in it since. Now 18 months old. She's been in her day bed w/ no rails for 3 months and doing fabulous! Goes to bed at 9ish, wakes at 7ish. Comes down stairs and cuddles w/ Daddy on the couch till 9-10ish.

I brought my son his own bed about 2 & 1/2 mnths ago and he didn't like it at first. I let him sleep with me and his dad to get get to sleep and we put him in his bed after he was sleep for an hr. I think now he likes the convenence of not climbing on our bed and his is just right for him now. If you tried to get your son to sleep in a new bed in a new house might really scare him. you just have to let him get use to it.

i have my little one is a big boy bed already and he has been in it since he was approximately one. I have three sons so my little one has a room to himself and the older ones share a room. I took down the crib and hid it so that it would be out of sight out of mind and then used encouragement and comfort things to help with the transition. He runs to it everytime it is bed time because of the routine that we have set up. The bed we have is one that is lower to the floor so that he can easily climb in and out of the bed on his own, making him feel bigger and more grown-up about sleeping in bed.

hey, my son is almost 18months old, we put him in a big bed about 2 wks ago. he sleeps in his bed. afternoon naps too, its winter here in south africa though, so we have him in bed with us, which is a mistake... but its so cold, i feel bad to leave him alone in a big bed, but during the day he sleeps in his bed, we got him a bunk bed, so the bottom one has like a panel on the side, so he cant fall off, i took the stairs off, incase he tries to climb up to the top. but he is happy in his bed though!

HA! My son flips and flops and rolls so much in his crib, there is NO WAY I can move him out right now. not even close! The crib I have also makes into a toddler bed with rails, so we MIGHT do that a little later, but right now, he is happy with the bed and so are we!! He sleeps all night in it, and has since he was 3 mos old!

We're slowly getting started just because I have another one coming next month and it was hard to pass up the 25 dollar toddler bed at that yard sale! We got his big boy room done last weekend and let him take naps in it...takes him a little longer to fall asleep but he gets out of bed and does fine all by himself and knocks on the door when he's ready to get out.

my son is 17 months now and im buying him a big bed in 2 weeks :D i hope it goes well... the only thing im worried about is him getting out in the middle of the night.. has anyone had problems with that??

I triple safety checked my kids room and then put up a gate at their door until they knew to stay in their room.

just get down to his level and think of how he may "play" with something. If he is a climber like my son was you may need to bolt down dressers and other large objects to the wall so that they wont fall. (my son could climb long before he could walk! lol)

i have just done a huge cleanup and completely changed my sons room a few days ago to get it ready for his new bed.. the only reason im buying him a big bed is because im pregnant again and i realy dont want to spend money on another cot lol. the thing im actually concerned about  is that my son kind of doesent have an actual room. the area of my house that i live in is like a granny flat where i have a bedroom and a bathroom and hes in the room thats ment to be a living room i guess... so he could just walk straight into my room and get into bed with me... i might get a gate to put inbetween our rooms so he cant get in... i guess ill just have to see how things go

there are sectional gates that can be put together to make "walls" so to speak. that way you dont have to pen yourself in.

I tried putting a baby gate up but that made it worse. He'd scream at the gate until I came to him. And on nights I didnt put it up he usually slept thro the night. Still gets out of bed...now it's easier to get him back to sleep if he does crawl out of bed though. I just take him back n tell him mommy n daddy r in the next room n it's time to go to sleep. He does pretty good. Plus on nights daddy watches a hardcore action movie my son will have nightmares n those r the nights he sleeps with us. Daddy still denies the movie kept him up. Thanks you guys so much for your responses...alot of moms said I was moving too soon so I just wanted some more opinions. Not that it really matters....I'm his mom ya know? I was just curious. It's great to see other moms have the same feelings as me.

I'm amazed. I had no idea babies went into big kid beds so soon! My son still sleeps in his crib and he'll only sleep in his crib. He won't even sleep on the couch for a nap. I can't imagine the fight I'd have trying to get him to stay in a big kid bed long enough to fall asleep!

We had a hard time transitioning my son (who was about 20 months old at the time) into a big boy bed. We tried the traditional Fisher Price car bed. He would not sleep it and would always get in the floor. We felt so sorry for him sleeping in the floor that we tried a twin bed with rails. He loved it and there has been no turning back.

my baby just went transition from our bed to her bed/crib, we've taken the rail off and put on type that block her from falling, (we have a convertible crib.) so she can get in & out of her bed by herself.

We have a bunkbed set for our youngest boys (a five year old and a 16 month old) our 16 month old is still using the crib. We are going to transition him soon to his new bed. What we are going to do is get him used to sleeping on the bigger mattress by putting it on the floor (I always worry that the size change may mean falling out of bed because they aren't used to it, so we put the mattress on the floor so we'll know if we have a roller or not! lol)

I figure as long as they can get on and off the bed without getting hurt and won't be able to get into mischief with the added freedom its all good. Plus the look on their eyes when they see their new bed is priceless!

We had our son in a regular bed right at a year and he's done wonderful with it. He and his 3 year old brother share a room. Our biggest problem now is keeping the 17 month old from climbing the ladder into the top bunk. We put our 17 month old to bed and let him get to sleep before we let our 3 year old climb into his bunk. They do well with it and love each other. I hope they keep their good relationship.
