Does anyone else's son do this? Every time my son is being disciplined (yelled at)by someone he starts laughing and seems to not be able to get the smile off of his face. He is only 4. Do you think it is a nervous habit?

my now 6yr old used to do this...he told me when he was 5 that he wasn't sure if I "mean it" or not...not sure that helps!

I laugh at inappropriate time as well... I absolutely hate it! So on top of my nervousness I add embarrassment.... not a psych doc but it's a good posibility it is a "tic"

YESSS!!! My son does the same thing...he's 4 as well. It took me one time saying, "I will smack that smile right off of your face". Immediately after saying my mother's own words...it dawned on me. I used to do this and sometimes still do...My mother used to accuse me of breaking something or getting into something I shouldn't be doing...and I would smile/laugh...and I couldn't stop. I would tell her over and over the truth...but it would infuriate her because she viewed my nervous habit as disrespectful. I'm 29, and we spoke about this a few years ago...and it took her awhile to realize that it was purely just my nerves. She asked me when I was little, why I laughed...and I said, I can't help it. She started to realize then. So, I don't get upset at my son, because I know the difference. For one, he knows better than to "laugh" when he's in trouble...so I just tell him to calm down (his smiles/laughs) and pay attention to whatever I'm trying to explain and/or discipline him.
