Hi everyone,

Welcome to the February 2008 Babies community, where we chat about our February 2008 children and whatever else is on our minds!

To get things started, I thought it would be nice if we all introduced ourselves in this thread, which will be pinned to the community home page. Whether you're a Circle of Moms veteran or you're new to the site, let us know who you are, what you’re interested in, and what your lovely February 2008 child is up to right now, developmentally speaking!

Kelli, So sorry for what you're going through. I can't believe the courts ruled against you like that. Can you get affidavits from the ballet, gymnastics, swim and reading and science class teachers telling the court how your daughter is doing socially? We do have the right to homeschool our children. I suppose if you and your husband will be sharing joint custody and he wants your daughter to attend full time preschool and he's willing to pay for it, unfortunately that may be a compromise you have to make. What does your lawyer say about the situation? Also are they taking into consideration that with parents divorcing your daughter may not be feeling as social as she might have been and a little more clingy to the parent she feels closest to and provides her with security and stability? Don't give up. Mothers know what is best for their children and unless a mother is proven unfit, she should be allowed to use her discretion in deciding what's best for her child. I don't have any experience with what you're going through so I would encourage you to consult with a lawyer and fight for your rights. You might have to decide what you're willing to compromise on so your daughter doesn't get caught in the middle. I know she's only 4, but I hope the court will listen to her and take what she wants into consideration so she'll be happy. I will pray that you'll be guided as to what you need to do and that you will be strengthened during this diffiult time.

Kelli, my youngest daughter is 4. None of my 6 daughters have gone to preschool and they are just fine. I get together with other moms with kids which gives them the social. Everything else to prepare for kindergarten I did at home with them. I use workbooks to teach numbers, letters etc. We have music time. I have educational games. We played the Pie Game today which teaches about fractions. We read a lot of books. We don't have too much structure, but work on something everyday. My girls have all been A students. My oldest daughter graduated high school with her associate's degree from community college so I think I've done just fine with them. Now my 2 year old son is a different story. He was born 2 months premature and has had numerous health problems including a stroke which caused brain damage to his frontal lobe. He is developmentally delayed so he will probably be going to the special need preschool with Early Intervention. They've been coming every 2 weeks to our house to work with him since he was 3 months old. Now he goes to music class once a week for an hour at the Child Development Center which my 4 year old attends as well if I don't have one of my older daughters home to watch her. I've been told when he's 2 1/2 he will start Toddler Class which will prepare him for preschool. He has a speech disorder called apraxia so even though the speech language pathologist that sees him now teaches us things to do to work with him, I still don't feel like I know enough to help him so preschool will be beneficial for him. I think most children do not require it though. Most of my friends who sent their children to preschool was more because they wanted a few hours a week to themselves to get things done or get a break. The fact that their children were learning things to prepare them for kindergarten was just an added bonus. I'm not saying sending children to preschool is bad. I think if that's what you want to do and you can afford it then great. I just don't think it's necessary to do so. Moms can teach their children everything they need to know for kindergarten at home. It's precious time with them and I enjoy it. They grow up so fast and go to school soon enough. Anyway that's my 2 cents on it.

Hi - I am Sandra from new jersey and I just joined because I googled an issue that has been bothering me and this site came up. My daughter has been playing with her navel ever since she was a baby and I have been trying to get her to stop unsuccessfully. My biggest fear was that she would start kindergarten and still be doing this and alas it happened today. She started school 2 weeks ago and today the teacher sent her home with a note that said she keeps raising her uniform up and exposing her underwear. I know she does this to get to her navel and I do not want her to labeled because of this. She will be wearing shorts under her uniform to school from here on but more importantly how do I get her to stop this habit? I was told all along she will grow out of it but that does not seem to be happening and seeing as she is in a private catholic school and her teacher is already complaining about it I do not want this to cause any problems for her in school. She will be 6 in February.

Hi, my name is Amber I'm married and have five kids. I love reading the bible, praying, spending time with my family, spending time outdoors, and dancing. My 2008 child is Natalia. She is a very active and smart little girl. She's getting ready for kindergarden. She's so excited, she can't wait to start learning and make new friends.

[deleted account]

Hello everyone, thank you for inviting me to this post Tina. About me: I was looking to find out what all happens in the lives of 5 year olds and their moms regarding school and other activities. I have not been with my daughter nor been able to speak with her for years, she is in AZ in the US and I am hopeful of being reunited with her soon. I am here at this circle of moms so i can learn from other moms about the scene for kids in the US and be the best mom I can be. Thank you!

[deleted account]

Thank you, Julie. You shared wonderful insight that eases my mind a bit more. Sorry to hear about the difficulties you and your son are living through. It must be unbelievably hard for you and your family.

I asked about the preschool thing because I "home schooled" my 4 year-old daughter as you did with your daughters. She is well socialized through play dates as you did with your girls, dance classes, gymnastics, swim lessons. My daughter is shy with adults, especially male adults. But she has no problem interacting with children. In fact, she's usually the first child to say to another, "Hi, my name is... what's your name?" She tells me before she goes into each ballet class that she plans to make yet another friend that day. And she does. She also participates in Storytime at the library.

My husband and I are divorcing. It's very unfortunate for the family but most of all for our daughter. He has never taken the time to build a proper relationship with her. Instead, what little time he spends with her is used to chastise her because 'she shouldn't want to play' and he forces her to count to 100 or recite bones of the anatomy, etc. This makes her nervous, at times frightened and he does become physical. Needless to say, she doesn't trust him and prefers to avoid him much of the time. He claimed alienation by me and motioned for a guardian ad litem and it was granted. He and the guardian claim our daughter is isolated and unsocialized. So to appease them, I enrolled her in preschool reading and science classes one day per week at the family YMCA where she does her other activities (ballet, gymnastics, swim) because she's comfortable there. After 5 weeks, the teacher tells me our daughter is well ahead in being both academically and socially prepared for kindergarten. Still, they claim she is unsocialized and needs to go to a "proper" preschool at least 3 days per week! I'm furious. Don't we have the right to home school our kids?

Thanks for the insight and lending your ear. :)

Hi, I'm Kelli. Love the group!

I'm 43 (UGH) and my two kids are 14 years apart! My 4 year-old daughter adores her big brother. My son is in his first year of college. I left my career when my daughter was born in 2008 and recently started my blog, Sweetness of Life & Motherhood. http://SweetnessOfLife.com.

Q: Does anyone have a 4 year-old that hasn't gone to preschool? If so, what are your thoughts on that?

Hi MoMs!

My names Lindsey, My daughter Gianna was born 2-22-08, and wow was she a perfect first baby to have! Always slept well, good manners, and independant...still is haha. Shes the oldest now of 3, i just had my first baby boy this past sep hes just shy of a month now. But Gigi is a good girl, loves to help, and is a awesome big sis, she shows her lil sis direction but isnt pushy, although sometimes like every child she likes to be the boss lol. She recently found an interest on the internet, GOOD things tho, educational games and i have to say im very proud of how smart she is and the things she knows! Her motor skills are excellent! Technology is the future She likes artistic things and has recently shown alot of interest in making dolls and stuffed animals talk, she gets a kick out of it. Shes shy at first but loves to play, swim, run, and be outside. I have gotten upset because the older she gets the more she talks/knows and she has had some smart mouth but thats every kid i just have to learn not to take it to heart. Shes a lil cuddle bug to, very sweet, and happy, and always laughing. Quiet at times but VERY observant. I have to take that more into consideration. Ive become a very fast spell talker lol, but i love my kids although with having my 3rd things have gotten hectic, but were making it work and gianna has been very good throughout this process

Heather, I'm sorry to hear about your divorce. I hope you find the support you need on this site.

[deleted account]

Hi! I am Heather Allen, 26 and have two children.

Gabe, my son, is 4 years old and is quite the energetic little bunny who is a total Momm'y boy!!

Maggie, my daughter, is 3 years old and she is more of a cuddler and is not as energetic, but close!

Due to an abusive marriage, from which I am divorced from now, I am a single Mom who works 24/7and although I wouldn't trade my job for anything else in the world, there are challenges and that is why I am on this site :)

I want to grow even closer with my kids and show them just how wonderful this life can be :D

I should also mention I am a christian Mom and although I believe in spankings, with limits, I don't do them. I stick to time outs and taking away privileges and need to learn more about how to "master" the arts of these :)

I am also interested to hear about other Mom's :)

Trisha, I'm surprised how small your daughter was for only being a month early. That was my son's size, but he was 8 weeks early and doctors said he was small for gestational age. Did the doctors say you had intrauterine growth restriction? How long did your daughter have to stay in the NICU before you could take her home? It sounds like she's developing normally so that's good.

Hi, my name is Joy, am a stay home mom/small business woman. My identical twin girls Ada & 'Nedi, born 2-18-08 are a pair of fun and trouble at the same time. Both have a high level of individuality and a very impressive personality! Ada loves to draw, very innovative, creative, learns fast, and hits every milestone faster than Nedi. Nedi also loves to draw, loves flowers, butterflies and fairies. Although brave, she rarely gets into trouble unlike Ada. :)

Kian is the feb baby his birthday is 4th Feb 08 and he is being such a little monster right now, he likes to throw tantrums to get his own way, but he also likes to play games with his 16month old sister. he plays shape games with her, helps her to ride his mini quad bike, and he is having speech therapy lessons at the moment due to being slightly behind in the ability to produce the correct sounds in speech. i.e instead of saying video he will say dib-e-yo. or instead of saying fff for phone he will say p for pone. the therapist said its not too bad for his age but he needs a few pointers still i love both of my children no matter what they are both amazing and special to me xxx

Hayley, Not that I've seen, but it seems like there's a group for everything so I bet if you did a search you could find one. Well I'm glad you found out what the problem was. I can't offer any advice there because when I had secondary infertility I was the one with the problem. I do know that I've heard no tight underwear or hot baths for men trying to conceive and one book I read said drinking a caffeinated beverage beforehand is supposed to help, but I don't know if it's true or not. Supposed to give more pep to the swimmers. I'm sure if you keep searching you'll find the right thing that will help. I'll keep my ears open.

Hayley, So sorry for your loss. I had 2 miscarriages in 2 years before I had my 2008 baby so I know how you feel. It wound up taking us 5 1/2 years from the previous daughter before we had the last daughter in 2008 so don't give up. Have you had a drastic weight change in the last couple years? That can affect your ovulation. Anyway if you're working with your o.b. there are a lot of little things that can be checked that have easy, non-invasive, inexpensive interventions that can help. I wish you the best of luck. People try to tell you to just be thankful for the one you have, and you are, but it's because of the wonderful one you have that you want another one so badly. I'll pray you get another one.

It's an Educational Program where someone comes to your home and brings lessons and teaches you to teach your child the material. It's prepping them for school.Kind of like an @ home preschooling, with the mother/ in my case being my child's teacher. We have group meetings once a month. And once a week I meet with my hippy teacher, and give her work that my child has completed,if there is something that they see he needs help with,we work on that as well.An awesome program! Its for kids 3-5
years.

Now our lil bundle of joy...or tornado of joy...lol, is extremley smart for her age and that makes us very happy, except for the fact that she acts like a 5 yr old in a 3 yr old body. Always right, knows everything and will argue till the end. She will defie me in every way but soon as dad speaks she jumps...I have been the primary parent with her since birth (dad works alot) I am the punisher the good guy and the teacher... She loves the outdoors, we ride our quads alot and have built a seat with protection on back of daddys quad for her and she LOVES it. she does have her own lil one and will ride it even till it gets so dark she cant see. She is a tom boy at heart like her mama...among other things...among other things...too much to list ;-)

Hi all! I am new to this forum area. I am 39 years old and I am originally from Turkey, but have been living in Portland, OR area for the past 10 years or so. I work as Marketing Administrator by day and I also have two businesses that I do out of home and plan to "retire" my daytime job by next year and become a full time WAHM.

I have 3.5 years old boy/girl twins. Mia and Andrew were born on 02/06/08 @ 35 wks. Andrew is super active, super smart, very social and super funny guy... He loves to get into everything and he pretty much likes to climb, jump, roll etc all the time. He is full of energy and get's in trouble frequently. :) lol His sister Mia is the opposite. She is very laid back, calm, easy going, can be little shy at first, but warms up fast, she to is very smart and she likes to "mother" her brother all the time...lol

Both are potty trained, can count to 50, they recognize all letters, Mia can write her own name (Andrew still trying), love to read, sing and dance. Recently they learned my cell phone number (you know for emergencies and all) but I am having hard time teaching them that it is a private information. "Stranger" is a difficult concept for them yet. My son (the social bug that he is!) pretty much walks up to any one he sees on the street and says, "Hi, are you stranger? My name is Andrew"! ** I can hear you guys laughing..stop.. seriously, how am I going to make them understand this "stranger danger" thing...??? *sigh*

Well, I guess that's good for now, as this turned into a life story, rather than just an introduction. LOL
