On 3 separate occasions, my 3 year old son went down for his usual 2pm nap. Only one these occasions, he did not want to wake up. He slept through until 2am, got up, had a bowl of cereal, and went back to sleep until 6am. I try waking him up but he tells me he is still tired. So I leave him... I guess he is listening to his body.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Katrina, thank you for sharing your experience. Fighting a cold possibly, so I have been bulking him up on his Vit C. His day does start at 6am (he is an early bird), does not get tired until 1or 2pm. He is due to start school soon, so I will try to move his nap time closer to 1 and then up to 12 to help him get adjusted.

Hi Rachael, I have 4 boys and when it comes to nap time, I've seen it all. I ALWAYS let them sleep!

Sometimes nap lengths are in waves. Like an average 1hr nap may turn to 2 for a time. If I see this occurring, I simply adjusted to an earlier nap time, so as not to interfere with bedtime.

Every kid is different tho and each of my boys I've had to draw schedules/conclusions based on individual needs.

So, you are correct, their bodies know. Through the years, I have noticed it is almost always due to fighting off illness. A lot of times there are no symptoms, but they may have been exposed to a cold or flu & tho you can not see it outside, their little bodies can be at war on the inside trying not to get sick.

Granted there are many other reasons, but I have found that to be the most common conclusion in my house, to napping into the night.

They either bounce back (& u will never know why) or get sick within 24-48hrs & you will have had a heads up that it was coming.

That said, I assume you have ruled out not keeping scheduled bedtimes or an abundance of over stimulation that may be simply causing the need to "catch up" on sleep? I also found the 2PM nap time somewhat of a red flag. That's a bit late for some kiddos & can cause confusion for bedtime/darkness.

Is he getting up at 6am on a regular basis & not napping til 2pm? (long day for a 3yr old)

You may also consider that naptime when/if he starts Pre-K and K is generally around noon & here in CA is a mandatory 2hrs, so he would be down and back up by 2pm. (not sure where you live)

NO ONE knows your child better than you, so please...NEVER question what your mom gut instinct tells you!!
