I have tried everything from wearing him out by going outside or to the pool. But his big sister doesn't take naps anymore, and I think that he may feel he is missing out on something. Plus, I put him down for the night with no fuss, but he wakes up in a couple of hours thinking that it is time to play. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

My daughter has been sleeping better at night since she is only taking one nap .. she goes down after lunch time for 2 hours.. she sometimes gets cranky like she could nap again but we dont let her.... she might go down earlier for the night.

My daughter transitioned down to the one afternoon nap fairly easy. Some mornings if it has been a late night prior & I'm needing a shower, I'll put her in bed with some soft books/toys. Tell her mommy is taking is shower & after I'm done either she's still awake or asleep! But mostly, we're down to the one nap....which is normal for kids this age. Bedtime hasn't changed for us...still approx 8:30....sometimes we still hear her talking an hour later, but she knows that it's bedtime & we won't come get her.

Definately develop a night-time routine if you haven't one yet. Caroline picks up the toys then we go to her room where I brush her teeth while Daddy changes the diaper. We put on her pajamas and after I've gotten hugs&kisses, Daddy reads the "I Love You, Goodnight" book which is read ONLY at bedtime. He lays her down, turns off the light & shuts the door. Most times she'll wait until at least 9 before waking up the following morning!

my son does this to. Nap after lunch. Completely normal. for the waking up part. we have one of those star turtles in his crib to and he likes to change the colors if he gets "Bored"
also his Gma bought him a chicken flashlight for Easter. it cookadoodledoos when you squeeze the tail. it took several weeks but i told him to squeeze it if he wants to wake up. But if no one comes its not time yet. and that seems to work.

When my son was 14 months I thought I was strange that he still took two, LOL. Now, at 16 months, he is down to one nap after lunch. Your son is probably just an average 16 month old. The evening waking must make you crazy, but I would just lay him back down and tell him it's time to go to sleep. Let him cry for a minute or two, and I bet he'll go back to sleep on his own.

My son is nearly 17 month old is also on one nap a day. We find he likes his morning nap but will skip the afternoon nap. It works well for us and we've just brought his bedtime forward to between 5.30pm and 6pm. I wouldn't worry about dropping a nap. Do you have a bedtime routine in place to indicate it's night time. If not, then may be you could start one.

Hope things work out for you in the end x

Hi Natalie,

My daughter is also 16mths and has only been having one nap a day for quite some time now. She used to have a 1/2hour nap at about 10 in the morning but we decided to cut it out when it was taking her over 20mins to fall asleep and by the time she was asleep we had to wake her within 10mins which seemed pointless. I think that some babies just don't sleep as much as others. my friends baby, also 16mths, sleeps for 2,5hrs at ten in the morning and then has an hour nap again later in the afternoon! When we dropped my daughters morning nap we brought her afternoon nap forward by half an hour so now she is asleep between 12 and 12:30 and sleeps for 1,5 to 2hrs in the afternoon. We have been battling on and off with her bedtime...she can only fall asleep if we hold her because she likes to play with my hair and then when we try put her in her bed she wakes up so we end up leaving her in our bed. if she's in our bed she sleeps through most nights but it's not ideal so we started sleep training this week and so foar so good. it is only night 3 but she fell asleep

Sorry about the essay :)

It works for us but each baby is so different - good luck xxx

My daughter was down to one nap a day by the time she turned one. She is at daycare during the day and she wanted to be on everyone else's schedule. Her doctor said it is normal to drop the morning after she is one. She takes a 2+ hour nap in the afternoon and sleeps fine at night.
