Road Trip!

We have a trip to Salt Lake City from Denver planned in a couple of weeks; it is about an 8 hour drive. We are stopping overnight on the way home, but on the way there we will be driving straight through. I know 8 hours isn't terribly long as far as road trips go, but I am hoping for some ideas on ways to keep my kids happy. My daughter just turned 4 and my son will be 17 months. I absolutely cannot read to them in the car, though. It makes me soooo sick!

I just got back from Florida where i managed to take my daughter on road trips as long as 15 hours..in 3 weeks we drove over 5000 miles..lol...lots of snacks, crayons and color books..and yes, stop at every rest stop and let them play for awhile..it does extend your time but it is well worth it, it tires them out and allows them to take a long nap which will allow you at least 30-60 minutes of quiet time:) have fun and good luck

do you have a portable DVD player? Or laptop that plays DVD's? You can get the portable ones for like $69 now, so they are fairly cheap. Just get you a car charger, or plug in!! When we travel, my son does excellent, but he has been in a car seat since he was born!! LOL! we live 1 hr away from work/ sitters so he is in a car no less than 2 hrs a day!!

On long trips, he will usually sleep for the 1st part, and I try and schedule them around nap times. So he sleeps for 2-3 hrs of it. Then we stop at rest areas ( make a note of where those are on your trip!!) and i let him run and play in the grass, eat a picnic, then we are off again. This time I'll put in in DVD or just let him play w/a toy.

I do a 6+ hr trip about once a month!!

Also, get ready for it to take longer than usual...

I am used to my son, 17mos old also, not sure about the 4 yr old, but might be a good time to break out a "special" road trip toy! Dollar store barbie or something she'll like!

I took my then 15 month old on a 6 hour road trip..turned out to be an 8 hour road trip. We stoppd at every other truck stop and let him run around. Deffinately bring stuff for them to play with. Pack less clothes n more toys. It'll really help. All my son wanted to do was play. I let him go thro my purse bc I got so desperate. Pack a bag with toys n just let them snoop. Plenty of water n snacks are a plus.

Legos are awesome but they may drop them. those magic crayons that only draw on special paper r nice. Toys that light up and have tons of buttons. Books that read by themselves.I'd buy a couple new toys for the trip..nothings holds a kids interest like some new toys. Good luck to u! Let me know how ur trip goes!
