Hi Stephanie,  I think that ur son is allergic to cow's milk. My 2 boys had the same problem too. I only started formula when they r 2 yrs old. My doc says their protein tolerance will be better when ther r older. How do u treat his nappy rash?

As Megan suggested, try watering down the cows milk, even if it is just on his cereal, and see how he gets on. Is it a cereal he is used to? I am just wondering if maybe there is something else that could be causing the rash? My 13 month old has also had a bit of a rash, well, more like a few spots rather than a rash. They dont seem to be sore or bothering her and are clearing up nicely with a little cream. I assumed they were connected to her teething but, after reading this, I am now wondering if it caused by the cows milk. As it is going though, I shall continue with the cows milk. Is your little one getting too sore to be able to do the same?

i forgot to mention i dont use cows milk as a drink. ive only put it on his cereal to try and get him used to it

Depending on what kind of cereal your using I would suggest maybe mixing half water half milk or more water depending on the reaction he gets.

If the cereal is the pablum stuff I just mix baby apple sauce in and you barely need any milk or water, if hes eating big boy cereal corn flakes or rice crispies then just water it down a bit (doesnt sound appatising but it will help his bum)

As long as you dont have carpets everywhere when its just you and him in the house take off his diaper for a short while, it will help clear up the rash, he may have an accident but fresh air can be a great rash cleaner.

I am gradually changing my 13 month old too. I started by offering her a drink in the afternoon of half cows milk/ half cooled boiled water.  I did this for about a week until her stomach had time to start adapting to the new milk. Then gradually started adding less water and now her afternoon drink is just cows milk.  She still has a formula feed in the morning, at bedtime and one during the night. My next step is to swap the morning drink to cows milk.

If you dont want to mix it with water, you can mix it with his normal formula. Start with half and half, then gradually increase the cows milk with less formula. Does he eat things like cereal and mashed potato? They are also good ways of introducing them to cows milk. I dont think he any sort of intolerance as it is just nappy rash and not anywhere else on his body, but do keep an eye on it. His stomach will need to get used to the change of milk, even done gradually, so he may still get a bit of nappy rash but it shouldnt last long. If it continues happening, ask your health visitor for advice.

I am using nestle  2nd stage formula (the uh yellow container) its 12 months and up. My son gets milk in certain cereals like when his dad makes his favourite cream of wheat. He mixes it with milk and water.

He gets other milk products like yogurt and cheese, once hes about 18 months I'll probably switch him to 3% milk.

I know its more expensive but he likes it, oh he gets it in a sippy cup. He can have it three times a day but we've been giving him juice or water if he is still thirsty.

You could also try non cows milk as well, but I would talk to his doctor on certain types of milk, you may want to talk to the doc if hes getting a rash after he drinks his milk (he may be a little lactose intollerant so its good to check up on that) Is he ok with say yogurt or cheese? If he is then he should be ok later for real milk. Just find something else to replace it for now if its really bothering him.
