I started feeding my little darling solid foods around 11.5 months, with the occasional baby food meal. When I went to the doctors to see how everything was, she had only gained 100 grams in 3 months. I really dont understand why, since she has a very good appetite and seems to be eating all the time. I have gone back to baby food (made all from scratch).. They usually consist of meat (red or chicken) or fish, plus a carb (potatoes, rice, pasta or beans) and veggies- I also add butter and cheese or olive oil.
So her daily menu looks like this :
Wake up: 1.5 cups of milk with oatmeal
Mid-morning snack: half a bananna, half an apple, gram cracker and some milk
lunch: meat+carb+veg (pureed)
snack: yogurt:
dinner: fish+carb+veg (pureed)
before bed: 1.5 cups of milk with mashed cookies or cereal
throughout the day she drinks water with a little bit of juice
I would just like to add that we move a lot and routines sometimes get shifted PLUS Haley started walking at 12 months and does not stop all day- She also poops 2-3 times a day.

Im very worried, since she is alert, healthy, active, happy and sleeps very very well..I dont understand what could be the problem.

Thanks for the imput!

We have the same problem with our son, except I can't get him to eat as well. He is constant nonstop moving and poops seconds after every meal so I am thinking he has a fast metabolism. It is hard when you see all the cute, chunky babies not to worry that he isn't weighing enough.

Kimberlee it sounds like you're doing all the right things! You've consulted your doctor and are ensuring your daughter gets a healthy balanced diet. As long as she's not losing weight and has no other health problems I wouldn't worry. My daughter is a big baby (born 9lb 6oz on the 97th percentile and has spent more time off the charts than on) but she has also plateaued with her weight gain since she started walking just before 11 months. It's to be expected, and the growth charts reflect this.

Hello kimberlee, I also have a 13 month old baby girl and she also a very active baby, she eats and drinks alot of fluids thoughout the day, but even though she eats a lot she is still not gaining weight, she only weight 20lbs, the dr. did mention she was a bit under weight but, he also did mention not worry, she was perfectly heathy and all I needed to do was just give her a bit more food than what I was giving her, don;t get me wrong I do worry about her but at the same time seeing how active and healthy she looks helps me keep calm, so same advice I give to you observe your child and you judge, if you see you child is not acting like he usually does than take him to see the doc, other wise don't even worry, every child is different, and you seem to be doing everything right.

I would not worry about it it sounds like your daughter is very active i have a 3 1/2 yr old that was that way and so is my 14 month old. and you feed her very healthy that does make a difference on top of having an active child. as long as she is maintaing her weight and she is eating well and active i wouldn't worry about it. Haveyou talk to your dr. if anything she could go in for weight checks to make sure she is maintaining. we had to do that quit a bit and we are great. we also eat very healthy and are very active! You sound like our house. hope this helps

my daughter has after 3 months only just had another growth and weight spurt. she sort of stopped around the 11mth mark and didn't gain alot of weight or grow any taller, she has now hit the 14mth mark and has grown about an inch and gain 500 grams in 4 weeks. you also have to remember that they get skinnier when they start to walk and crawl so even if she is getting taller she might not get heavier for a while. hope this helps.

Sounds to me like she doing well, but I would go back to diced or finger foods, and letting her feed herself.
My son is just 14 months, and he often eats more than I anticipate - tonight he had pasta, peas, carrots and tinned meat. He ate the bowl full I gave him, and when DH asked about the pasta/veggies that were left I suggested he see if Miles wanted them, rather than just throwing them away, and sure enough he ate that bowl full as well, then went on to demolish a yogurt!

My gut feeling with things like this is that as long as they are active, happy, developing new skills and sleeping well then they are doing ok. If she stops being/doing these things or starts to lose weight then I would worry.

Your daugther is doing great! I wouldn't change a thing. My daughter was the same way. She only gained 6oz. from 9 months to 12 months and grew 2.5 inches in the same time frame. She started walking at 10.5 months. She was eating great, sleeping great and very active. My dr said she was perfect. She is now 2 1/2 and is right on target for her physical development. Keep up the great work and enjoy her...the time will fly by.

Your daughter is fine! She is not going to get much fatter round but get taller in the next few months, I asked my daughters doctor about that she told me straigh up that my kid was not going to gain very much at all. She is wonderful, GOOD LUCK!

If the doctor wasn't worried, you shouldn't be either. Was she showing growth in height? My daughter has slowed way down in her weight gain but is still growing taller. She has been over the 90th percentile for weight since her second month, so she still looks a little chubby, but is getting taller now. And she's been eating table foods since about 9-10 months. And she seems to be eating all the time. And now that he's more active he'll be working alot of that food off.

Hi Kimberlee, please do NOT worry. Your little darling seems to be doing very well apart from the weight gain and that is the most important thing. The messures doctors use are just guidelines and you have to remember that every baby develops differently. My son 13 months is also not on the average weight line, but he is sleeping well, eating well and loves grawling and chasing after toys. Just trust yourself and if you are really worried you can always ask your health visitor for advise. I would advise you not to over feed her especially with extra fetty food just because you have been told she should gain more wait. She is ready when she is ready and food you are giving her seems to be very balanced already so stick to it and you will see that she will be just fine. :)

He was kind of worried. He thought it was strange that she wasnt gaining weight accordingly, however, taking notice that she was healthy, walking, happy, and he also knew what we were feeding her, he thought it could just be fast metobolisim. I just hope when I put her on solid foods, I didnt make a mistake and stunt her growth or anything. !!!!!

Was your baby's doctor concerned? It sounds like you are going a great job and if the dr. wasn't worried you shouldn't either. At this age they are so much more active and those calories are burning away.

My son was the EXACT same way. The dr put him on PeidaSure. I am going to see how he is when I take him back for his check-up. Ur little one is just burning off the fat. Don't worry too much. Sometimes they just need an extra boost to get them there.

Hi girls, thanks for the reply. I was giving her only diced foods and such from about 11.5 months-13 months..until I found out she wasnt gaining any weight. I went back to pureed food since I can control that she is getting all of her nutrients in spoonfuls- I distract her with toys while feeding her- like I said, she is VERY active. I want her back on diced and finger foods, but right now, she seems to be doing much better this way. I always add baby instant breakfast cereals to her milk, since she doesnt take milk on its own. Thanks again for the reply.

Her menu looks good, could she stand having more at each serving or does she seem full after? You could try adding peanut butter or other nut butters and more cheese to her meals. Is there a reason you still puree her food? Maybe she would eat more if it was diced?? It seems you stay away from processed food so this may not be an option, but my doctor suggested adding Carnation Instant Breakfast to my sons milk; maybe your wholefood store has something similar. I have read that weight gain slows during this next year, partly due to them being so active, but also pickiness as they try out independant thinking!! I would only be concerned if you doctor was concerned at your last visit. Good luck!

i wouldnt worry about it too much. my son is also not gaining much weight now, but hes growing taller day by day. your daughter might just have a fast metabolism now and since she is so active, she may not be gaining much weight because of that. she sounds fine to me personally!
