Anyone else starting food?

[deleted account] ( 74 moms have responded )

My baby has all the things to start food so we went ahead with cereal and he loves it. He will open his mouth when anything resembling a spoon is out now. It is a bit overwhelming and sad! I am going to do sweet potatoes and bananas this week. I am not sure that I want to add all this or how it will impact my breast feeding. I know I should have waited until my doctor's visit in 2 weeks but I am positive he is ready! I'd love to know what others are doing or how you feel about starting foods.

My daughter started drinking her apple juice from a sippy cup at 5 months and now she wont drink a bottle she only want her sippy cup. So we give her, her formula in her sippy cup and she is even starting to hold it too. She is doing just fine on it. I would suggest the NUK sippy cups to start with, they are just latex like a bottle nipple.....but it is shaped like a sippy cup and will not spil. Liquid only comes out if it is sucked on. My daughter loves it.

Not yet. We're doing baby led weaning and no solids until at least 6 months.

Do you nurse before you feed solids? As long as you nurse first that should help keep your supply up.

Jayden started food about 3 weeks ago or so. I think he was totally ready. He's still breastfeeding, and no less than what he was before we introduced food. He's doing great and love to eat.

I started my baby on foods too. I personally think that it is up to you. You know your child and when he/she is ready.

I started foods right before Ethans 4 month baby well check. I have an older boy who is 3 years old and with him I remember his pediatrician saying that if he could sit in a high chair that was a good indicator that he could have baby food. So at his appt they told me it would be a good time to start food! One thing that I want to know is if anyone else was told to start sippy cups at 6 months? I was a little confused by that one! I am nursing my son still and he will drink from a bottle without a problem but a sippy cup this young???

I started my daughter on rice cereal at about 3.5 months old and on fruit/veggies around 4 months old. She eats rice for lunch and a fruit/veggie for dinner. She loves squash and carrots the most and hates peas and applesauce.

i did that although i started my daughter when she was 13 weeks i knew she was ready as she was constantly feeding (she is breast fed) my health visitor said it was fine but be careful of food with glucose as it can damage their kindeys and they may have a reaction to it x

I started my daughter on cereal and applesauce and Bananas, she did better with the bananas than the applesauce. She sees her bowl of cereal and starts making noises that tells me she wants that and then she see her bottle and squeals in happiness. It is so cute but she is growing up way too fast. : ( I am so lucky to be able to stay home with her I didn't when I had my son.

We started rice cereal at 3 months because the 6 ounces I was giving her every 2 hours just wasn't enough. She hated the rice cereal by itself, so I would add a couple little spoonfulls of veggies to make it more appealing. Gradually I worked my way up until now when I just add a little bit of rice cereal to the container of veggies. She is completely happy and healthy and I always know she's getting enough. She also still drinks from her bottle almost as often as before.

My baby started cereal and purity on the age of 3 months, she is now 5 months and enjoys every second of it :-) I wasn't breast feeding and she went over to clover full cream milk from 3 months, A very healthy baby with no problems at all :-)

[deleted account]

my baby started this past week, he just wasn't getting enough from me. he loves it but I also breastfeed still. he only gets the rice cereal 3 times a day and I'll always nurse him right after he gets cereal. he refuses a bottle no matter what's in it.

I started my son on cereal when he was 31/2 months. He was ready and happy! I waited about month after that and started him on baby food! His doctor didn't say anything but I guess he didn't have to! My son was over 9 lbs when he was born and he'll be 5 mths tomorrow & he's wearing 9 to 12 mth clothes. He's not fat either his height and his weight put him in the 90%'tile! He's is just long and a big boy! If you are sure he's ready and he's taking it from a spoon, then feed him as long as your ready for it.

[deleted account]

if you feel ready go for it. We are keeping our daughter on milk until 6 months as they say that is all a baby is able to digest and get nutrients from until 6months. But I have learned that all babies are individuals just like adults, with likes and dislikes just like we have. And they are born with it, they don't develop it.

So trust your instinct and do what feels right.

i started feeding a week before he turned 4months. began w/ applesauce & cereal. then tried sweet peas, then bananas, this week pears. he loves them all. & i put mylocon drops in everything, just in case of gas build up.

i know what you mean about being sad. i couldn't keep up w/ the breast feeding so had to put him on formula 3 weeks after. tried pumping, but the milk dried up. i still have the lil baggies of breastmilk in the freezer, eventhough i know i should throw them out by now. but i just don't want to! they remind me of when i could give him everything he needed. :(

I started my son Devin, who just turned 5 months old, on cereal at 3 and 1/2 mos because he was so hungry all the time. At first he didn't like eating off the spoon, and most of it landed on the bib. Eventually he got it. My doctor wanted me to wait until 6 mos to start feeding fruits and veggies, but I felt that he was ready, so 2 weeks ago I started him on veggies. And he just loves them. I feed him one flavor for 4 days straight to make sure there are no allergies or reactions. I also mix a little baby cereal with the baby food. This way its alot easier to feed to him and he gets the nutrition he needs from the cereal. Before he started eating solids, he was drinking 4-5 10oz bottles a day, and now he only eats around 3-4 6 oz bottles a day and is perfectly happy. I think that a mother always knows what their child needs. Go by your intinct.

Haha, Alex was a bit reluctant, but now is really receptive. He eats both rice and oatmeal and has had some pear juice too. I am pretty sure that Alex is ready for other solids, but am waiting until I get the "ok" from his doctor(he goes in tomorrow). Once we get that approval, I don't know if we'll go with peas or maybe some peaches first. LOL.

I started my with cereal at 4 months and we just started giving my son some bananas in with cereal. He was hitting a growth spirt and I couldn't pump enough for when I was at work. So when I am home I breast feed, but he gets one bowl of cereal and bananas when I am at work. At least it lasts him a litle longer. He still wants everything off of my plate when I eat though. I really don't think solids are going to be a problem.

We started cereal at 3 months and food at 4 months

She is now 5 months and does two small cereals feedings a day and two small food feedings a day, she also drinks 5 or 6 bottles a day. She is 50th percentile for weight and she sleeps all through the night! The doctor is pleased with our routine! No baby is the same and you have to do what works for you and your baby.

I started solids at 12 wks he loves his food and still has all his milk, I think mums know best and if you think it's time go for it

I started Preston on rice cereal at 3.5 months and then sweet potatoes on june 30th. he did really well! Then after 5 days of sweet pot. i started peas (im rotating 5 days of alll the veggies first because the doc said if you give them fruit first they might reject the veggies..weird right lol!) he LOVES the peas, cant get enough! and he does eat a bottle afterwards. BUT-Make sure you only give him one solid at a time for at least 4 days to make sure he doesnt have an allergy. then if he doesnt show any signs of an allergy you can switch to a fruit next or whatever you have planned. good luck!

I am a naturopathic doctor and there is alot of research about delaying food to 6 months or older to reduce food allergies in the long run. I am nursing and supplementing with organic formula. My son is 5 months, but yes every baby is different. Don't start with fruits first though.

I started my daughter at 13 weeks on rice cereal. I tried one new food every five days to make sure she didn't have a food allergy (because I do!). Try mixing veggies in first because I didn't and she will not eat them unless it's paired up with a fruit.

We have started rice cereal and unfortunately my son doesn't like it at all. I've tried mixing it different ways (with water, formula, apple juice) and nothing helps. It also constipates him terribly. So, we have started, but are having a rough time with it.

[deleted account]

My baby has been bottle fed for almost 3 months now (I didn't produce enough milk for him). A few weeks ago we started him on cereal, but it is so bland he didn't enjoy it. We ended up buying rice and apple cereal and mix a little appleasuce with it. He loves it. Just yesterday we started feeding green beans. He does not enjoy it pureed though, he wants it a little chunky (just like him, lol). So I use my majic bullet and chuck up some cooked green beans to add to the cereal. That he loves! Next week we are on to peas I think. I was told to start with veggies first, starting with green ones, then orange then yellow. Not to start with fruit because it is naturally sweeter and they might now want the bveggies then if they have already had the fruiits. Has anyone else heard this??

I started feeding my daughter puree food when she was 12 weeks old because she acid reflux, and that helps her from time to time when I give it to her. We didn't always give her the puree food all the time because she wouldn't take it sometimes, but now she does laying down! She won't open her mouth when she's sitting as the spoon comes towards her, but she'll open her mouth by all means when she's laying down. Whatever works right? We've been giving her banana. We've tried chicken & sweet potatoes. She doesn't like those. As for milk, she was breastfeeding, but stopped taking at 10 weeks, so we got her on the bottle, and for acid reflux babies, as your doctor if you can mix one scoop of formula (the ones with rice) and one scoop just normal formula. I've noticed with mine that it helped reduce her spit ups A LOT. she used to spit up so much within an hour, and with the mixing of formula, its helped get it up to at least 1-5 times an hour. I haven't started her on the rice cereal yet because when we tried it just made her constipated, and she was in so much pain. So puree foods and formula for now.

your baby will let you know when hes ready to eat food because like ours, when we first started feeding her puree food, she would just spit it out and not swallow any of it. now she eats it all up!

my twins were born on feb 23rd and they were 6 weeks premature. I started them about 2 weeks ago on stage 1 cereal and only the starter serving mixed into their formula once a day right before bed. since then they sleep about 7 hours at night. They are still only drinking about 6 4-5 oz bottles a day but gaining weight excellent for prem babies. 4 months tomorrow and they weigh 10lbs 7oz and 10lbs 6oz.

I gave my baby cereal maybe one or two times. I only gave it to her because I was thinking my breast milk wasn't enough to keep her full. But I stopped. I'm waiting on her doctor to give me the ok on giving her solids. But nobody knows your baby like you do, so if your positive that he's ready, then your doing the right thing.

My baby was born February 22, 2009 and i too decided this week that he is definetly ready for solids. I have 3 older children whom went by the schedule and we didnt start any sooner than 4 mths but my 3 mth old is showing all the signs. He gets excited around food and is constantly chewing on his fist after feedings. i tried rice cereal and he took it happily and today gave him sweet potatoes. He ate the whole jar without spitting any out. You as a mother will know what is best!

I started my baby on baby's 1st foods like a month ago. He had all the signs and he was starving, lol. I started supplementing with formula at 6 weeks cause he was draining me and also gave him cereal at 6 weeks. I made sure everything was ok with my doctor first and he said he would be fine. I had a very large baby at birth and at 2 months he was 15lbs 13oz. But he loves it all. He is even drinking juices mixed half with water and he loves that too.
