My 17month old daughter has progressivly over the last six weeks, developed an intolerance to what we think is dairy. She started of with diarrohea...which was nothing new as this was the reason I stopped breastfeeding and went onto lactose free formula at 9 wks of age. As we introduced solids we gave her a smidge of youghurt which she tolerated with no problems...so we moved onto cheese..again with no problem. When we gave her normal milk after 12 months it was a really slow downhill road to where we are now. If I give her anything with dairy..including cheese and youghurt, she gets diarroea, eczema and sometimes her eyes swell up. Such confusing symptoms. I guess it would be nice to see how other mums cope with their childrens allergies.

My son will be 18 months on the 23rd of August...for his 1st b-day my aunt, his great aunt made him a cake w/peanut butter icing....he had no problem...3 months (@ 15 months) later we went out to eat and he had eaten some of my ice cream which had peanut butter topping on it...well 2 hours later he was screaming and scratching his nose appart...we didnt know what was goin on...it just so happened that my step dad & mom were visiting and they work at a hospital. They checked his stomach and he had started hives...so we rushed him to the ER and we were there for about 5 hours...the hives got worse...he looked like a strawberry from what a friend told me. I took pictures...it was a scary experience and hope we dont have to go through it again...we now carry around an epi-pen.
I was also told that if you eat alot of something during your pregnancy that your child will either become allergic to that item or wont like it...well guess what...I ate LOTS of peanut M & M's while I was pregnant...I never heard that before but it makes you wonder if thats true.
I have allergies and asthma but I am not allergic to any foods...my son has eczema as do I....He had his allergy testing done on June 29th and it came back that he is definetly allergic to peanuts. I hope and pray that he isnt allergic to anything else or that he develops asthma.

My son has multiple food allergies including dairy (which he has developed an anaphylactic reaction to). The swelling of the eyes is a bad sign. If multiple systems are being effected, such as the swelling, eczema and the diarrhea you should probably avoid dairy until you speak with you pediatrician and/or an allergist. My son's allergy is pretty severe now but started as eczema and uncomfortableness when he was just a few weeks old. He couldn't even drink the hypoallergenic formulas offered in the store because they are derived from dairy. If you don't avoid dairy altogether, the allergy will probably get worse. For any questions about allergies, you can go to the Kids with Food Allergies website: http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/ and see if it helps with any additional questions.

My son has a milk allergy and we discovered it when he was about 2 months old. He had similar symptoms really bad eczema, his tummy bolgged out because it was full of gas he would cry for many hours straight everyday cuz he felt so uncomfortable from the gas. His little bum hole was really red his throat was red and irritated and he later developed blood in his poop. (that was the scariest symptom.) I took him in at 2 months knowing there was something wrong babies just dont cry for 4 hours straight everyday for no reason. Lucky for us I was nursing my son so i just eliminated all dairy out of my diet completely so he wouldnt get it through my milk. I didnt have go buy expensive formulas like nutramigen. The smallest amount of dairy would upset him. I had to read all ingredients, no whey, casein, cream, butter, lactose all that stuff. It was tuff. My son is now 17 months and I was told he would out grow the food allergy between 6-8 months of age He didnt though he is better now but still has the food allergy he can eat crackers with whey in them or milk in them but no solid dairy like cheese or milk or yogurt. His doctor says he should grow out of it by 2 most likely. Although you can create a permanent food allergy for you child if you give he dairy when she has a food allergy to it. So we substitute for him we give him soy yogurt so he gets his probiotics and we give him soy milk. There are so many substitutes for milk these days its not such a big deal. The health food store has everything. Be careful when you are buying things like soy yogurt because there are some soy yogurts that claim to be soy then you read the back and they have small amounts of dairy in them. So read the ingredients. There is only one brand of soy yogurt at the health food I have found that is stricktly all soy. Soy milk is fine to drink instead of milk as long as you are buying the kind that is calcium enriched most of the main brands are. We buy the plain/original silk. Dont buy Vanilla soy milk there just extra sugar in there that your baby doesnt need. Dont give her any dairy for a while then in 6 months or so introduce a little bit and see if she reacts, if she does then dont give it to her again. Also a milk allergy is different then being lactose intolerant Have her tested or talk to you doctor. Milk allergies are something she is more likely grow out of but if she is lactose intolerant thats forever. My cousin is severely lactose intolerant she actually is missing the enzyme in her body to break down the lactose and if she even has the smallest amount It begins to store itself in an organ because it has nowhere to go and she can actually die. So she has to check everything like even chap sticks and everything it is serious. Her case is very rare it is a genetic disorder for her though. What she has is something they test every baby for when they are first born. I was scared my son would have it because I am a carrier for it but thank goodness he did not get it and in his case he just has the allergy to the milk something he will grow out of. One last note I forgot to mention also is is really common actually for babies to have a milk allergy our pediatrician said 80% of babies develop a milk allergy. I hope I was helpful for you.

Toddler diarrhoea....Thanks Karmi...Ive never heard of that!! Ill be on the internet for ages researching that :). Thanks heaps! A cream that I have found that works wonders is called paw paw cream. Its all natural and stays on for ages...its more of a barrier than a moisturiser but the flare ups dont last very long after I put it on. Erin I have found it super hard just eliminating dairy from my girls diet....let alone wheat eggs and peanuts. I just cant imagine! You are super mum :)

My son had the SAME exact problem. He had diarrhea ever since we started dairy, mainly milk such as your daughter. Also after this time he started getting a little eczema, which I guess didn't relate but it is a coincidence. Anyways after such a hassle and putting him on soy milk, back to formula, then back to soy it never got better. So I took him to a GI
( Gastroenterologist) doctor I found out he has something called Toddler's Diarrhea. Which this can continue up until they are 4 years old! Yes I was shocked, but it is simple to manage. They put him on Benefiber twice a day and we haven't had such a bad problem since. Maybe every once in awhile he may have some diarrhea but not like before when he would go through 10-15 diapers a day tops! It was crazy. But I strongly suggest talking to your daughters doctor about this and if it sounds like the samething as my son ask her doc about referring you to a GI doctor. I pressured my son's doc until she did so. Also I am very anal about my son having lotion applied to his skin everyday, and it has cut down on the eczema. If anything I would highly suggest Curel fragrance free lotion. It is amazing, I have a severe allergy to lotions so it works like wonders.. The swelling of the eyes is a little confusing to me, not sure what that may mean, but maybe it could be a dairy allergy.

My 17 month old son is allergic to milk, peanuts, wheat, and eggs. He got tested at 5 months old when he started breaking out in hives when I switched him over to formula. He also has eczema. He never had digestive issues with milk, only skin problems. It's been a challenge finding him foods he can eat, on top of him being a picky eater. Thankfully, he's not allergic to soy. So, he drinks enfamil toddler soy formula. He eats vanilla soy yogurt, soy pudding (which he loves), allergy free chicken nuggets, regular chicken (have to mix w/ apple sauce), butternut squash, oatmeal, sweet potato, allergy free breakfast bars, allergy free waffles, turkey lunch meat, and allergy free crackers w/ soy nut butter. I also found animal crackers that he's not allergic too. Stop and Shop has a decent selection of food for him and I also shop at a specialty store. That can get a little expensive. So far, he hasn't gotten upset if he can't eat what we're eating. I dread the day he's going to get upset if he can't have what other kids are eating at parties, bbq's, etc...Also, we need to figure out how we're going to deal with Halloween when he's older. But, honestly, we've become so used to his routine and giving him the foods he likes, that it really hasn't been an issue yet. He goes back for allergy testing in Oct, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that maybe he outgrew some of his allergies. The doctor is hopeful about him outgrowing the wheat allergy and maybe the milk. He thinks peanut and egg may be life long.
