My daughter is 8months and is really going through constipation. She cries with such pain! Breaks my heart. Her feces at times can be real big or just comes out like little balls. Don't know want to do anymore?

My little boy had this problem a few months ago, and he took a while to get over it. I spoke to so many people about it (doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc) with a lot of difference advice, none of which worked! Finally the best advice came from my cousin, who is a naturopath.

She said the constipation was because his digestive system was immature. She said you have to find what works for him. WHat worked for my boy ended up being a combination: baby probiotic twice a day (get the refrigerated stuff from the chemist), flaxseed oil (1 teaspoon per day), a dash of prune juice in cereal, and lots of pureed pears. Once the constipation clears, you can wean bub off each item one at a time until he is pooping well on his own. Wean off the juice first, then pears, then flaxseed, then finally probiotic.

Stay away from bananas, rice cereal and applesauce

Hope this helps!

Anmaree is having a hard time also. Although she is not crying, that would be hard for me too. I tried prune juice but she didn't like it. My doctor told me that dark karo syrup is good for constipation. a couple teaspons a couple times a day. but I'm not always good with remembering and because of that I didn't get huge results so she prescribed lactulose. I gave it to her once a day for a week and it helps almost immediately. Then you start weening off like every other day. then every few days then stop. It works pretty good. also research what you are feeding your baby because I was giving her bananas ansd peaches and the doctor said they are both constipating. hope this can give you some relief. good luck.

My son had the same problem. I gave him 1/2 water and 1/2 pear juice twice a day. Plus a some oatmeal with pears for breakfast. No apples, bananas, or potatoes.

I have the perfect solution for constipation!!! My son has it every other week, i swear, so I give him prunes (gerber) mixed with something I know he likes like pears or vanilla yogurt so it masks the taste of the prunes. Do this at least twice a day and she should become unplugged within 24 hours. Or you can mix 2 or 3 teaspoons of prune juice in her bottle if she drinks bottles. I PROMISE this works!!! Prunes are a natural laxitive along with Pears, Peaches and Plums. Bananas, Rice cereal, Apples and Toast are constipating. Just remember "BRAT" (Bananas, Rice, Apples, and Toast) If your baby has diarrhea those foods will help firm up her stool.

Steamed, pureed pears work an absolute treat for our little guy, and cut out any iron-rich cereal if you're using it.

may need a different formula...give her more water...water always helps loosen things up...with the pain...a true life saver..is mylicon infant gas drops...they work like a dream to help relieve some of that painful pressure....they do say you can use prune juice or karo syrup etc....but id talk to the pediatrician about possible complications with whatever she is eating...for instance..my daughter had the same problem..turned out she has a protein intolerance...and since changing formulas she no longer has the problem..if you have already tried that..id definately get her checked out asap...as there could be a problem inside that has gone undetected..

I had that problem with my daughter when she was on a soy formula for spitting up, I kept her on the soy and upped her fluids. Try pear juice (for sitters) about 4 - 8 ounces, at least 2 oz per meal in a small bottle, should flo better, if it seems really hard and rolls around in the diaper, try a baby emima

i agree with becky, i just passed through that stage with my daughter!.. i also ended up having to give her some pedialyte. she loved the grape kind!!!! i breastfed her the whole time and became very sick and had to quit breastfeeding her but, i switched to a milk based lactose intolerant formula by similac.. and she seems to agree with that.. and it will help her stools

We find that adding plenty of liquids (water) and undiluted apple. prune and pear juice have really helped. We stay away from rice cereal and do oatmeal or no cereal on those days. I generally stay away from bananas, too. As others have said, warm baths, too. Hang in there!

My daughter had sever constipation, I had to rush her to hospital as it actually got stuck. I gave her lactalose (medicine - oil) it is very gentle, I also gae her apple and pear juice. The peadatrician said to feed her brown pears (remove skin), the grainy texture helps young children that are conspitated.

The juice works the best for us. We give him about 2 ounces a day to keep him regular or 4 ounces if he hasn't gone in a few days.

My nine month old daughter Harriet has had the same problem as Mon night she was up until 5am crying with tummy pain. Think it was too many cubes of cheese! Just tried to get a lot more water into her with a splash of prune juice or apple juice. Also went back to veg purees and this seems to have done the trick today :) Not nice though when they cry after trying to pass a stool or got tummy pains. Good advice though on giving warm baths. I didn't think of that on Mon. Hope this helps.

This is exactly what my 9 month old is going through. The best thing to do is take her into the dr. That's what we did. Our dr. recommeneded we switch to soy formula and to have her eat fruit like apricots, peaches, pears and to stop any cereal she's eating. Also white grape juice is good. Hope this helps. And good luck, I know what you're going through.

I had the same issue with my son, especially after introducing bananas. Do you have any castor oil? I rub it on his bell in a circular motion and then cover his tummy with a burp cloth (it is greasy and stains clothing), but it works within 15 minutes or so. I give it to him after a warm bath. It works wonders. Good luck!

Well I know what worked for me was straight apple juice it was almost an instant relief for my little guy I just gave him maybe an oz not watered down. Yet sometimes messy so be prepared they are backed up after all. And also try prunes you can buy it in any baby food form and that also helped me. And if all else fails just try soothing her with a warm bath because sometimes things just don't work it has to run its course.

We have been dealing with this issue alot lately, too. Had previously tried prunes but found that stool sort of leaked around the blockage and then she'd poop for 2 days straight but it was hard. Just started on Pear Juice last night. Gave about 1 ounce with 1 ounce water. She began pooping this morning and by this evening it is now soft and she isn't straining or crying anymore! We found the pear juice in the baby food aisle at the grocery. Hope this helps and your little one gets some relief.

I have the same problem with my son. I just rub his tummy, warm baths, plenty of liquids. I think the cereal I'm giving him is a problem....I think there are too many bananas. Let me know if you find anything that works.

I go through the same thing wiht Allison! I've tried everything from apple juice to milk of magnesia. Whne I see her trying to go, I lay her down and push her legs up to her tummy. That seems to help. I even have to resort to suppositories sometimes but they help to if she hasn't gone for 3 days or so. Keep away from Bananas Rice and applesauce

Try a nice warm bath.. I do that with Adam, just be aware sometimes it can get a bit messy if you know what i mean.. sometimes i lie him on his back and rub his tummy in a circular motion - i think this helps digestion etc :-) Adam went through a phase where his stools were very hard.. the doctor gave some medicine (for babies) that help soften them.. also try to give more liquids to try soften the stools and cut back on the fibre like bananas. hope this helps
