How to get my baby to take longer naps

Right now my daughter will only nap in her crib for about 30 minutes at a time. I have gotten her to occasionaly sleep for longer periods of time in her swing or on my bed but since she is moving around a lot more I don't like putting her in my bed alone. She will sleep for like 2-3 hours if I hold her. I know she needs to have at least one 2-3 hours because when she doesn't she is a mess the entire day. After hours of her fighting her naps I usually give in and hold her because at this point I am exhausted from dealing with a cranky baby all day. I'm going to school in the evenings after my husband gets off work and I desperatly need her to take longer naps so I can get my stuff done or get a nap myself before I have to go to class. When she first wakes up from her short naps I don't rush in right away and get her up, I let her cry a little to see if she will settled back down but she doesn't . She usually gets herself really worked up and I have to go get her and it takes a little while to get her to calm down. Any advice?

Not sure if this is a good thing or not but the Baby Whisperer has this thing called Wake 2 Sleep (W2S) where you go in about 5 minutes before they start to wake up (go into light sleep) and gently stroke their face or rouse them without fully waking them. That gets them out of one sleep cycle and into the next. I have only tried it once with my baby and she ended up sleeping 1.5 hours rather than just 40 minutes. Not sure if this has any harmful impact on them so I haven't done it often. Let me know what you think or if you try it. Good luck!

my daughter sleeps 10 minutes at the most twice a day until at night. She sleeps all night usually from 10 til 8 or 9. I give her a bath around 9, feed her baby food n get her stomach full n rock her to sleep. my daughter sleeps with me so after that i lay her in the bed with me sometimes i dont have to rock her i just give her a bottleof juice or somethin n lay in the bed and she goes right on to sleep. I also have a fan.....that also helps her sleep. i kno how it is mine is cranky all day and woke go to sleep i just have to put up with it.

My baby rarely naps longer than 20-30 minutes. Today he can't stay awake but the Dr told me he was fine and catnapping babies usually sleep through the night. I covered his little ears and told him longer naps were better ;-). Does she sleep well at night? My guy usually sleeps as long as 11 hours with a snack after 7 or 8.

Have you tried playing soft music or white noise while she's napping? A friend of mine did that to help her daughter sleep. I wish I had more to help you with, my son naps well as long as he's fed, and has a clean diaper and is in his crib. If he's not in his crib though he takes about 30 min naps also.
