My Son has a Continuous Runny Nose

I just don't understand what to do. He has had a runny nose for about 2-3 weeks now. I thought it was allergies so I gave him benedryl consistantly and it didn't help. I then thought it was maybe because his back molars were breaking through, so I gave him Tylonol and that didn't stop it! He has no other symtoms like a fever or cough... so what should I do? I talked to his ped. and she said it was probably allergies. I don't want to keep giving my son meds. I try to stay away from them but I feel bad when he starts getting cracks underneath his nose from wiping it. Any ideas?

My son has had a runny nose for about a week now... but like all of you no other symptoms... I dont think its allergies because hes never had before except when hes been sick when he was much younger and a little when he cut his molars.... However the entire house got sick but my boyfriend and I got over ours in a few days... our symptoms were nothing more then stuffy nose, tired and my bf a cough. We are already better and my son still has his runny nose.... Ive been cleaning his nose out and putting baby vicks on him in the morning at night and this seems to help a bit... but some days it just runs and runs and runs..... should I bring him to the doctor or just let it run its course.... im just worried about all of it going into his chest and stuff... idk im a first time mom is all.... hes fine otherwise though still pretty energetic during the day a little more sleepy at night.

I found a natural remedy in a bottle...everything is natural and it's homeopathic medicine called Kids 0-9 and can be bought at Nutrition house. It works for me...there's lot of natural remedy there for infants to kids for different kinds of problem like teething...it's natural so it's safe...

MY 19 month had the same problem. I took her to the doctor and he did a blood allergy test just to be sure. The results showed that she was highly allergic to cow's milk. She has been on Soy milk for the past few weeks and the 'cold' like symptoms have faded.

Try Boogie Wipes instead of tissues or baby wipes when wiping that runny nose. They are made with saline and not all the other stuff baby wipes are made with. I have tried them when I have a stuffy/congested allergy nose and they feel pretty good. Good luck!

Hi there, I too have had the same problem with my daughter and was constantly giving her allergy meds and taking her to the dr. I started giving her immune system vitamins...vitamin c, zinc and echinacea...she is almost two and the dosage is for an older child so I gave her half the dosage. She hasn't had a runny nose in weeks since I started using it and her appetite increased too. I've ordered stuff from vitacost.com...they've got low cost vitamins that works really well.

my son had an allergic reaction like what your describing but it was to pollen because we were outside when it happened and he got put on Zyrtec and he has been fine ever since. I too don't like to medicate my child but he can breath and function with out red puffy eyes or nose running better than he can with those symptoms and the humidifier helps my son .

Hi Tabitha, I am not an expert by any means but if it were my little girl (who has had a runny nose) on since she turned one. Each time it will last a couple of weeks and at one time 6 weeks. It could be anything from teething, growing, cold, ellergies etc etc. I would just let nature take its course and let his little body deal with it for a couple of months, especially if he doesn't have a temp or fever!
I know this might sound horrible but I have a soft dry facewasher that I use at home with Alice and wipe her nose from the tip of her nose down and this takes whats on her skin and some of whats in her nose. It doesn't hurt her because I sort of use a rolling motion if you know what I mean?
Hope this helps :)

well i understand not wanting to give your child medicine all the time but if your child has constant allergies, as does my youngest, you really dont have any other choice, unless you want to put your child in a bubble. you could look online and see if maybe there are any natural or herbal remedies for children to help with allergies. also i would suggest a humidifier/vaporizer. you may not have any choice but the meds good luck

How old is your son? I did not find Benedryl worked either. My daughter had this too. People always thought she was sick. Though the teeth did cause some. But for the most part I would agree with your ped. dr. a.bout allergy The color coming out of the nose can be a singal for allergy or infection. Putting my daughter on singulair helped for a while. Though I know how you feel about meds all the time. So at times I would take her off and I could see the difference. At some point her ped. decided to send her to n ENT (ears, nose, throat doctor). He put her on a nasal spray for a while and this really helped, but in the end they removed her adnoids. This helped the nose problem and improved her sleeping too. Do you find him sleepy even after a good night sleep. They told me she was not getting enough oxygen during sleep to refresh her. Her adnoids were enlarged and for some reason this caused more mucus in her nose. Though this might not be your sons issue if it is a constant problem an ENT might be able to give you other options. Good luck!

my ped put my son on zyrtec and it has worked wonders plus it makes him sleepy at night. the only time he has a runy nose now is when he cuts a tooth.

My daughter had a runny nose- no other symptoms- for 4 weeks. Took her to the doctor and it turned out she had sinusitus. Quick antibiotic took care of the issue and she's been runny nose free ever since.

We had much the same problem and children's chewable Claritin helped us out. We give one 5 mg tab in the morning and that keeps the constant runny nose under control. Our pediatrician recommended giving it a try since our little girl is so big (27 lbs) He looked up the mg per kg and said it was safe.
Good Luck!

Allergies could be from some of the foods he is eating. My lo has got food sensitivities to diary and soy and one of the symptoms is a runny nose... so it is worth while checking those out. Allergies are air borne too and many sufferers go thru runny noses, etc at certain times of the year, every year, when the pollens (which a frequently allergens) are spread about into the air.
There are many allergens and many ways of getting them into the system. Speak with your doctor regarding this and I am sure they can help in starting the process in identifying what your son is allergic to.

My son had puffy eyes and a runny nose and when I took him to his ped he gave me a script for some allergy meds. I think part of it was because we were livin with my fiaces dad and he had a cat in the house. But when he started takin the meds his ped gave me it all cleared up. You may want to try to see if his ped will write you a script for some meds. I dont like givin my son meds either so when we moved out and got a place of our own he quit takin his allergy meds. Hope this help :)
