My son José Alejandro just turned 1 on feb 15, and I've been hearing and also been told that he's supposed to be already sipping from a cup when he's 14 to 15 months old! But he doesn't like them at all, I've tried different types, but he just plays with them, he doesn't sip at all lol
I'm wondering, 'cause I know every baby and mom are different, should I let him drink from the bottle and wait until he's ready from what I see or should I let him play with the cup? I don't knpw what to do because if I don't give him a bottle he won't drink anything, and I'm concerned 'cause sometimes he's thirsty and he gets mad if he doesn't have a bottle! argh!! makes me mad too, not all the way but... it's just that he's lazy he wants me to hold he's bottle for him, the only way I can make him hold the bottle is if I put him on laying down on a pillow watching tv!
I will practice anything that you post! Thanks in advance!

Like everyone has said, I have this problem too. For a while my son would want to drink out of a cup like everyone he saw. My sister got these cups from Babies 'R Us that have a straw in it and he took to it instantly. I still give him a morning and evening bottle but during the day I try putting water or milk in it. He will not drink juice but I have been told as long as he gets fruit during the day, it doesn't matter if he gets juice or not. Sometimes I have to just get a cup, a straw and whatever beverage and he will drink it like that.

My son Sylus just turned 1 on February 10th and he is the same way but the past few weeks he has gotten A LOT better! I got him small sippy cups with handles and fill them with 1/2 juice 1/2 water and then I show him how I suck on it and then I give it to him and say "now you try" then sometimes I will show him by putting it in his mouth and squeezing the nipple/sipper part in his mouth so he knows that something will actually come out. He has gotten SO much better in the last few weeks it's amazing! He still chokes sometimes because its faster than his bottle but I think hes getting it. You just have to work at with them a little! Good luck, I'm sure your little guy will get it soon! :D ~Katerra G.T.

my son turned on feb.20 and we got the sippy cup that have the clear soft spout to them and its sort of like drinking from a bottle. he was off his bottle within 2 days with these...he got a little mad at first until he realized the bottles were gone so now all he drinks out of is the sippy cup..but honestly its up to the mother.

I have problems with my 1 year old too..... I have tried tons of different sippies... I even bought regular cups too. I let him play with an empty one so he gets the hang of how to hold on to them first. I found that the soft nipple-like sippies he was more apt to try, but found that he could push them in and make a mess. Then I tried giving him the harder spill-proof ones and he just tried to chew on them with his new teeth. I found that the cheap ones at Walmart have been the best. I believe they are called "grab and toss" or "toss and gos"... They do not have the spill proofer in them. At first, I laid him back while holding him like he was getting a bottle and put it in his mouth and squeezed it a little bit, just so he knew what was in there.... After a couple of times, I let him try, and he took to it. He prefers to lay back with it, but he is drinking out of it and now he only uses a bottle for his water throughout the day. Hope this might help!!!

The Nuby brand with a soft straw works great. They even have cups with handles. (Target) My son hated the sippy cup with the hard mouth piece. I put water in my sons bottle and milk in the cup. When he realized his bottle didn't have what he wanted he took the cup just fine.

Try the soft spout ones, you can get them from walmart. That's what worked for me and I just stopped offering a bottle all together..he came around by the end of the day.

Same as Ash, my son refused to drink from the transition sippy cups, so we just took out the valve inside and he uses it all the time....warning, it can be messy when they bang it around or tip it over on the floor!! Recently I started giving him a straw sippy and he loves that one too (I found out how easy he could drink off a straw when I gave him a sip off my milkshake and he wouldn't get off of it!). He drinks everything out of a sippy now except we are still giving a night feed of formula in a bottle. As far as getting them to drink milk, try giving Carnation Instant Breakfast, made with whole milk; I give him about 4 oz prepared, with 2oz extra milk added, once a day instead of plain milk....a nice break and treat for him!! It is also a good way to add extra nutrients and calories, if needed.

I tried the no spill sippy cups with my daughter and she didn't like them. Once I had given a regular sippy cup with no extra pieces on the inside she loved it. The no-spill sippy cups were harder for her to drink from and she just got frustrated. Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. My son will drink water or juice from a sippy cup, but wants his milk in a bottle. His doctor said to try giving him only water in a bottle and milk in a sippy cup. When I read in the what to expect book, they suggested that you offer milk in the bottle but only a fraction of what they normally drink, then offer the rest of the meal/drink in the sippy cup. When I posted this same question a few weeks ago it was suggested to just toss the bottles and offer only the sippy cup. It will make him mad but eventually he will take it. I don't have the strength to do that yet as I don't want him to be frustrated like that. But it may come to that. Good luck to all of you with this problem.

Try a sippie cup with a soft nipple (similar to the bottle) and with little handle thingy's. If it's similar enough, you shouldn't have a problem. Neither one of my kids had a problem with the transition, and they were/are quite finicky. I just found nuby sippie cups with soft nipples and they have handles, which incourages little ones to hold onto them.

My daughter was really picky with everything and I finally found a cup she would take. I suggest putting his favorite thing to drink in it and either get an older child to pretent to drink out of it or pretend your self to drink out of it and then offer him a drink from it. I have 4 children and that worked really well with them. Babies always want something there parents or older siblings have.

I introduced a sippy to my daughter at the same time as she started solids. We are in Australia and babies need to start drinking water at this time due to the heat. She LOVES her water, but I am still having trouble getting her to drink milk from it. I have since upgraded her to the Nuby sippers with the straw, which she definitely likes better, but would still prefer her milk from a bottle. Thus far, she is still having the bottle morning and night, and her lunchtime milk is in the sippy (because it's not such an issue if she doesn't drink much).

My only advice would be to try the straw sippy cups, if you haven't already.

i have 3 children 2 boys and 1 girl my boys are 3 and 2 and my daughter just turned 1 on feb 28th both boys would not take the sippie cup at first i believe its normal some kids like it some dont. Walmart has this sippie cup that is about 6$ that has the bottle nipple top then the sippie cup top then the straw top and that worked great with all 3 of my kids .. My daughter had no problem with the sippie cup just my boys but let him play with it and if he will only drink out the bottle then maybe the cup i suggested would work great too since its a 3 stage cup. All of my kids quit having formula the day of there first birthday but the boys still used the actual bottle because of not liking the sippie cut. Just keep working with him he will use it eventually i believe my boys were 15+ months befor they used them full time! Good luck

ello, we have the same problem with our daughter, she was 1 on the 16th of feb and will only drink juice from bottle, we have tried several kinds of cups but she wont drink, in my opinion it doesnt matter what they drink from as long as they do, they are still only babys so just carry on as u are and dont worry about it. the only other thing she will drink from is a beaker, she wants to be like her big brothers so when we at home i let her drink from one, i have to hold otherwise she soaks herself but id rather that than her getting dehidrated. good luck and dont worry.

avent bottles got handles you put on the bottle, thats how I got my son to hold the bottle by himself. avent also has a sippy cup attachment for the bottle and I let my son play with that from about 4 months and to encourage him to drink from it I use to put coke or fruit juice in it, but milk still in a bottle. he didn't like the sippy cup much, but he drank the juice out of it, until he was 10 1/2 months we gave him a staw cup and with in a months he was off the bottle and only on straw cup.

but all this said. don't woory about it and take your bubs lead. he'll let you know when he is ready for the next step.
