Jolan does not sleep thru the night yet as none of my others did til they were closer to a year. He is breastfed and wants to eat on me ALL night long. I dont know how to get him to sleep on his own w/o me being there. Any suggestions?

My kids have both been the same way... My daughter didn't sleep through the night till she was 15 months old! Finally I found with her that she just needed a sippy of water with her so when she got thirsty. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my 5 month old son though... Might just have to let him cry it out...

I agree with you Alicia, all babies are different, there is no fool proof plan, this is my first baby and thankfully she started sleeping through just before she turned 4 months, but it's trial and error I suppose, there is no rule on how to make baby sleep right through!. I don't give her solids at night as I am too afraid it will be too heavy on her tummy...but then again as a first time mom, I have always been scared of everything! hehehe! I do give her in the morning and lunch time, fresh vegetable soup 9blended of ourse). what did you start your baby on at night?

We have a pretty set schedule that helps him know when it is time to sleep. We also swaddled him until he was over 4 months old and use a fan in the room for white noise. He was sleeping through the night by 2 months and now he sleeps from 8:30 until about 7:30!

Well my son will be 5 months on the 19th and his doctor went ahead and approved of fruits veggies and cereal for him since he is such a big boy....around 8:30pm he eats his cereal then gets a warm bath then eats about 8oz bottle of formula and sleeps anywhere from 7-10am .... i noticed when i was breastfeeding he was up alot more the breastmilk is thinner than formula so it doesnt stay with them as long! good luck!

Try mixing your breast milk with rice cereal just before bed time. It will keep him satisfied longer without needing to eat several times. Also try using Johnson bedtime bath and lotion. Made my daughter much calmer and she sleeps way better. Let him nurse until he falls asleep then replace the breast with a pacifier and let him sleep with one of your shirts so that he thinks you are still holding him.

babies are all different.. the best thing is to be sure you have a bedtime routine. this too shall pass. my dd is 5mon 2wks and does not sleep through the night. i work at 7am so this has been a big bummer lately since sleep is something i am really missing! we do our bedtime routine the same every night, she has reflux so that may be part of her issue... never fills her belly too full so seems hungry when she wakes.

good luck!

both of my youngest daughters were sleeping through the night by the time they were 2 months old, but I couldn't breastfeed (gland issues, it broke my heart when we found out about it). The fact that they were bottle fed may have something to do with it.

My little one, born feb 21, 09 is sleeping from about 9:30 til 7:30-8:00.. amazing.. I just giver her her final bottle feeding at 9 pm which puts her out and she's good all night... I also have learned to put her in a larger diaper size at night to hold more urine.. She's had a couple accidents with the size 1's over nite.. could it be a pee-pee diaper issue?

My Little one is 5 months 2 weeks and she has slept through since she was 10 weeks! I think that you should get a soother cause he is just probably not evening sucking properly he is just using it as a comfort! Soothers work really well! Try a bath just before you feed him and then try putting him down! Try some lavender in the bath as well, it really helps the little one relax! Good Luck

My DD has been sleeping through the night since she was about 8 weeks old. It really depends on the baby, with mine she was a very healthy baby and could stay hydrated for longer periods of time. They say sleeping through the night is 5-6 hours straight. Breast milk does digest quicker than formula so he may just be hungry during the night. I guess i would suggested the cry it out method but start by letting him cry for some minutes, then get him and gradually increase time.

My son typically sleeps 11 hours with 1 or 2 small snacks. But then he rarely naps more than 10-20 minutes at a time during the day. His ped doc said it was fine but I keep telling him he needs to nap more ;-).

I breast and bottle feed and my daughter generally sleeps through the night. Our normal night-time routine is around 5-6:30pm she gets dinner & dessert around 7-7:30pm a bath where she starts tiring herself out kicking away and then we go for a walk nightly, when we get back I attempt to nurse her or give her a bottle and generally she's asleep within 20 minutes or so. She typically falls asleep around 8:30p and sleeps until 6:30-7am and my god am I thankful for that because then I get some sleep too! I would say that if you move a lot in your sleep it's not the best idea to put the baby in bed with you, but there are people who don't move at all who have awesome luck with the laying down while nursing. Anyways I hope you get some sleep soon Alicia!

I hear you! My daughter just turned 5 months on the 9th of june. She is still not sleeping through nights. She has slept through the night before .. but it is not a regular thing. I start her out in her crib ... when she wakes up I usually bring her into be with my husband and I ( I put pillows beside my husband so he doesn't roll and we have a king bed so there is lots of room). She will feed until she falls asleep ... and if she wakes back up .. she just latches on herself. I find that I am getting A LOT more sleep this way .. instead of getting up .. going to the rocking chair ..etc. I feel comfortable that she is right beside me and that she can nurse when she wants .. and I usually just sleep right through most of it .. or wake up but fall right back asleep. Are you nursing laying down? You shoudl try it! It will allow you to nurse him and get some sleep too.

To answer some of ur questions...Jolan turned 4mths on the 22 of June...He gets a bath every night and i just recently began him on solids before bed but i have yet to get a full nights sleep. I do allow him to sleep with me (my husband works nights...so i have a snuggle bunny) and he tends to use me as a soother since he refuses to take a pacifier. He wakes about every 3hrs still to feed and i have tried to not feed him but he roots around like crazy and is gulping the milk down when i give in like he is starving to death. LOL! I know the dr. says that 4mths old should be sleeping thru but i seem to think that all babies are different...I just know that i will be happy to get a nights sleep. Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. It lets me know that i am not alone.

Hi

I notice the same thing with my 2yr old, she started sleeping throught most nights at 10 mths and at 12 mths she slept throught every nite. My 4mths old twins go to bed at 6-630pm and usually wake at 2-3 and then sleep throught until 630am. mostly of the time they wake 2 time, once for a feed and once to resettle back to sleep. Maybe try see if u can get bub to feed once in the night and feed 3- 3 half hourly during the day. then should wake less at night and feed more during the day.

any way hope that helps

My daughter slept through the night from birth until 3 months. She then started waking up several times a night and still is. She wakes up to eat but I read earlier today that it could be because we are the ones going to soothe them when they wake up. They smell our milk and then want to eat. Some nights she wakes up twice and others its more like 5 times. I just want to sleep lol!

Is he really "eating" or does he just like to sleep on you, with a little suck now and then? My little lady liked to try to sleep on me, but wasn't doing much actual eating. What I started doing was nursing her in a position that she would gradually slide off if I adjusted my hands, and so she was less and less in a nursing position. She'd fuss some when I laid her in her cradle, but for the most part would settle back down to sleep on her own. (She's now been sleeping from 10-5:30/6 since 2 months)

My baby Ben will be 5 months on the 19 and he will go to sleep around 9:30 or 10 and sleep til about 5:30am. I always give him a warm bath and feed him before I let him go to sleep. The warm bath always seem to help.

Mine will be 5 months on the 6th and hes still not sleeping through the whole night but he does a good 6 hours hes on formula and i know that fills a baby up more then breast milk but before bed i give him a little cereal or vegetables seems to fill him up pretty well, hes teething now so i think the pain of his teeth is whats waking him up now and the bottle seems to be the only thing to sooth him still waiting for the night he sleeps through!
