Son forcing himself to puke!

My son started sticking his fingers down his throat lately to make himself puke. I don't know if this is something I should be concerned about or if it's just him exploring his body and its reactions. I don't know if there is something wrong. And if so, where he learned to do that.

I'm sure he's doing it for your reaction. But you could always put a little lemon juice on his fingers or paint his nails with that gross tasting stuff they use to help you stop biting them, that might discourage this habit he's gotten into.

I used to look after a little girl who started doing this around 11 months and continued it up until she was nearly 18 months old. I thought it must be something she saw someone do but as I started to talk to other parents and my doctor I found out lots of kids actually do this simple because it's something they've discovered they can do. SOme also like the reaction other people give them. It's not abnormal (as strange as that may sound) and he will grow out of it. Unless he's doing it non stop or isn't keeping any nutrition down, I wouldn't worry. My own daughter used to do this when I put her down for a nap and she didn't want to sleep. Kids do the craziest things sometimes!

My son did it, too. He finally got to the point where he would just throw up in his own mouth, swallow it and then crack up laughing. Fortunately, he stopped doing it. Doc said it was just him exploring himself, and we didn't need to worry unless it got worse.

Our daughter did that I couple of months ago. I also was very alarmed and started telling her no. The more I reacted the more she did it. Then as hard as it was we started not saying anything and she stopped doing it with in two weeks. Our daughter is going to be 2 on 2/26. Good luck!

Hi Ashley
I'm with the other moms below. My daughter (identical twin who will be 2 in a week) did this for a couple of months this past summer. It was highly alarming to me, but that was exactly its intent. At first she was just experimenting then I made the mistake of being alarmed about it and it took on a whole new life. It was hard, but I started ignoring it. After a bit she gave up. Thankfully, my other daughter never bothered. It does pass! Just put on your toughest armor and blinders and go into ignore mode!

Hey! My son will be 2 next month, and a couple of months ago he went through the same thing. He didn't make himself throw up, but he kept doing it and gaggin himself until his eyes were all watery and he was about to throw up. Of course we always told him to stop doing it, but every chance he got he was sticking his fingers down his throat. It must have been a phase, because he stopped after a month or so. Sometimes he does this obnoxious choking thing where he's not really choking but we all jump up to rescue him...lol. I think he just does it for the attention

my son done the same thing and I did talk to he doctor about it and she asked what i would do when he done it, and of coarse i would tell not to do that and pull his fingers out of his mouth and she to me to stop doing that, that he was just looking for a reaction from me, so i would just ignore him when he would do it and within a matter of days he quit doing it. I too was concerned about him doing that. my son will be 2 on feb.4 and started doing this around 15 months and stopped around 17 months. hope this will help you.

You may want to call your doctor for their opinion on this but I would say, if he seems to be fine in every other way, I would just attribute it to exploring. Maybe he gagged himself once and it made him throwup a little so he thought he would keep trying!!! My son likes to see how far down his throat he can stick things sometimes...I guess its a good learning experience!! I would be concerned if he was doing it as a way to get attention, though. Good luck and let me know what the doctor says, I am very interested in this one. :)
